After the World War II, the United States leapt to the world's richest countries. A lot of social change occurred. It is important to have a comparison and contrast of social and political climate of the United States in the 1950s and 1960s.

In the 1950s and 1960s, American society was in the period of post-war economic prosperity. There were two crises in the US economy in the 1950s (1953-1954), but the general trend was still to move forward. People have more and better employment opportunities. They have improved socio-economic status, and thus increased demand for leisure. Thus, the American society of this period was called the "boom”: booming economy, the booming suburbs and baby booms with a gross national product growing from $200 billion to more than $500 billion (HISTORY.com, 2016). One important reason for the economic progress of the United States is the strong stimulus brought by government procurement as a result of the East and West Cold War and the US military expansion. Thus, the economic growth comes from government spending (HISTORY.com, 2016).

Population growth and consequent change in the consumption concept is another similarity of the 1950s and 1960s. The so-called "baby boom" phenomenon is most socially and economically significant. They grow along with the US economic strength and the constant expansion of the new way of life. Therefore, these 1950s and 1960s generation is the first generation to abandon the traditional cultural concepts, and embrace and practice the emerging urban pop culture.  And the traditional American view of wealth to encourage honesty to make money, restraint of consumption is outdated. Also, the economical boom provided a variety of goods. Middle-class people had spent more money than ever (HISTORY.com, 2016). The US wealth concept in the 1950s and 1960s is more reflected in the use of wealth, that is, consumption.

The social movement in the 1960s is much more radical with a larger scale and impact compared to that of 1950s. As a result of long-term ethnic oppression and discrimination, under the leadership and inspiration of the black elite, the awareness of the rights of the ordinary black people constantly awakened, and finally broke out a non-violent movement that demands equality. The "civil rights movement" of black ethnic groups in the 1950s focused mainly on the issue of racial discrimination in education and public transport, culminating in the Brown case, the boycott of the bus movement, and the Little Rock Incident. It showed that the black people's struggle was still using the legal methods of questioning and seeking support from the government. And 1960s becomes the most active period of social movement (terpconnect.umd.edu, 2016).   There appeared some large scale social movements such as March on Washington in 1963.  This indicates that the black civil rights movement in the 1960 was carried out on a larger scale and higher level. Also, there is more different social forces involved in the social movement including the women’s movement, gay rights movement, the anti-vietnam war movement and  environmental movement(lessonsite.com.(2016)). These social movements not only put great pressure on the US government, but also had far-reaching influence on American society from the ideological, the public opinion and the psychology. Finally, there is the adoption of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which is a major measure for the protection of citizens' equality by the Democratic Party. The ten years of 1960s is marked by the most intense struggle of social movements in the United States in the history.

In the 1950s and 1960s, the post-war young generation facing the sharp social contradictions, launched the pursuit of freedom, equality, and human rights, exerting impact on the orthodox values. In the 1950s, "Beat Generation" has appeared in the West Coast of the United States.  This is also reflected in the literature of Salinger, Kerouac and Ginsberg which challenged the existing order of the United States in their own way. "Beat Generation" is followed by anti-mainstream culture "hippies” in 1960s. They are enthusiastic about rock music, long hair, smoking marijuana, weird swearing, and social behavior. They are against the middle class value and standards, refused to be incorporated into mainstream society or orthodox society. They have their own unique way to criticize the centralization and elite rule.

To sum up, in the 1950s and 1960s, the United States showed a prosperous development in terms of economics. In fact, these two periods also lurks panic, poverty, unemployment, inequality and racial discrimination problem.
