The Great Gatsby is written by the American author F. Scott Fitzgerald in 1925. It is a novel that depicts how a young but mysterious millionaire Gatsby is obsessed for his former lover Daisy, how he meets her, how they fall into love again and how they separate again. Meanwhile, the mystery that how he accumulates his wealth is revealed in the end of the story accompanied with his murder by an angry man who thinks Gatsby has an affair with his wife and causes her death. At the beginning, the novel gives readers a very splendid party scene; however, the story ends sadly, which is a great contrast. Undeniably, it is a book worth reading because it conveys some ideas beyond the book itself.

First of all, I think it reveals the cruel reality of life in America especially in the 1920s by showing readers the realization and breakdown of Gatsby’s dream. It is a dream to step into the first class and to get back his old love. Long time ago when Gatsby left Daisy because of the breakout of the First World War, he was poor and he had nothing but Daisy. After several years he comes back with millions of wealth and fame, but he has already lost Daisy. At this point, he tries to get his old love back. He invites many people into his big and luxurious house, showing to Daisy that now he is able to give her a decent life. Nevertheless, like it says in the book, “All the bright precious things fade sp fast…and they don’t come back”, they have an unforgettable memory but it is short. This is how life frustrates people. When they are deeply in love with each other, though at that time Gatsby was poor, they were separated by the sudden war; however, after the war ends and Gatsby returns with wealth, they don’t have any chance to be together again because Daisy is already married and she is no longer the girl who once deeply loved him. Accompanied with the reveal of Gatsby’s illegal origin of his wealth, he is abandoned by Daisy in the end and murdered wrongly. To some extent, I believe that it reflects the great prosperity during 1920s of America and then the breakdown of the prosperity in the following years.

From another perspective, through the marriage of Daisy, I see the pathetic destiny of women during that period. After Gatsby leaves for the war, she is arranged to marry Tom, a rich man from first class. However, when Tom has affairs with other women, she even doesn’t have any ability or right to protect herself and her family. She is just an attachment in this family, functioning as a beautiful vase. She isn’t respected as an individual. In other words, in Tom’s eyes, money is everything that can buy love. In the fight between Tom and Gatsby, Daisy is more than a sacrificial lamb, for she finally can’t speak for herself or choose what she really wants. In my opinion, it is another tragedy of women in patriarchal society. To be specific, in that patriarchal society, women are born to be treasure of men rather than to be an independent person endowed with right to live for themselves.

In a word, personally I think it is a book of American 1920s, which shows a big dream of almost all Americans, to be wealthy and thus to be happy. Among those who pursue wealth in their whole lives, Gatsby is only an example. It is not only a personal story but already a epitome of the phenomenon at that time. At the same time, I insist that the role of women be paid attention as well, for 1920s is also the time when women begins to realize their own value and ask for the rights they deserve. As far as I am concerned, The Great Gatsby depicts American society in the 1920s vividly, containing various valuable themes, which worth readers appreciating again and again to find out more hidden meanings.
