Abstract

Technology has been increasingly important in helping improving our daily life. To make the life of ordinary people safer, more comfortable, and more convenient, the use of technologies such as the advanced network communication technology, computer technology and integrated wiring technology have been taken to the next level. This paper primarily introduces the Smart Home Equipment, with the goal of providing the traditional not only the traditional living functions but also a variety of convenient functions and a full range of high technologies.

This paper will go into details about the information about the achievements related to the smart home equipment, and its recent development, the new technologies about the smart home equipment, how those are implemented, as well as the envisage of the future of smart home equipment.

1. Introduction

Smart home refers to using advanced network communication technology, computer technology and integrated wiring technology to organically combine the life ofordinary people’s life with diverse intelligent systems and equipments. Through effective management, ordinary people’s life is becoming more comfortable, safer and more effective. And also, smart home is the reflection under the influence of the Internet. Through the network technology, smart home will house a variety of equipments. Smart home not only includes the traditional living functions but also provides automatic equipment with a variety of convenient functions and a full range of high technologies. Smart home not only has the traditional living functions but also has automatic equipment that provided a variety of convenient functions and a full range of high technologies.

The basic goal of the smart home is to connect household equipment and home security devices to a family intelligent system by means of the family bus technology (HBS). Smart home systems centrally monitor and control family affairs management, and keep the coordination of the families of these facilities and the residential environment. As result, people will be able to live in a happier life.

Smart home equipment is safe, convenient, efficient, intelligent, personalized and charming, which has a very important significance to improve the quality of life of modern human as well as, to create a comfortable, safe, convenient living space, and has a very broad market prospect. Although smart home equipment has not gained popularity like DVDs, home PCs, mobile smart phones and other household appliances as, it has a prosperous future development and popularity, which is an inevitable trend.

In this project, I am responsible for the research on smart home equipment. I focus on the connection between Bluetooth and context and all parts of the equipment. Equipment includes lights, fans and curtains. When people send directions by context, some operations should be performed like turning on the light and drawing the curtains. Among the procedures, it involves two problems. One is reading command and the other is the connection with Bluetooth.

This paper is focused on the perspective of smart home equipment, which can be divided into three aspects. Firstly, the paper will release the background information about the achievements related to the smart home equipment. Secondly, it will discover the recent development and new technologies about the smart home equipment. Thirdly, it will envisage the future of smart home equipment.

2. Background

Bill Gates spent $97 million and seven years to complete his super-high-tech home near Seattle, Washington, which has attracted the attention of the world. Then, he auctioned the chance of visiting the house at $35,000 at a charity. [1] Nowadays, with the maturation of smart home, smart home equipment has come down from the altar and begun to fly into the life of ordinary people.

It is estimated that all families will be equipped with intelligent home appliances in the future. In recent years, the real estate market has gradually become more rational after the rapid development and that the real estate developers have more in-depth understanding about the concept of smart home. In the meantime, intelligent technology and related products are gradually becoming more mature, which greatly promoting promotes the development of intelligence industry.  Intelligent residential industry is gradually aimed to a rational and pragmatic direction. Some high-end real estate projects have begun to introduce the concept of smart home.

Generally speaking, smart home equipment can be divided into two categories. One is network home appliances and the other is information home appliances.

On appliances. On the one hand, network home appliances are creative equipments incorporated with digital, network-based and intelligent technologies. Commonly, the traditional home appliances have been improved by this mean. Network home appliances can be connected to set up a home network. In addition, the family network can be connected with external internet. Therefore, the technology of the network household appliance includes two aspects. On the one hand, iIt focuses on the appliance interconnection that different appliances can recognize each other and collaboratively work together with each other. On the other hand, ; while it also aims to solve communication problems between internal and external network, which makes internal and external network interconnected as a unit. [2]

At present, the network home appliances which have been recognized include the network-based refrigerators, network-based washing machines, network-based air conditioners, network-based microwave ovens, network-based water heaters and network-based cooking equipment. [3]

On the other hand, information home appliances are household electrical equipment that is simple , practical and practical and having with the main function of PC. Traditional home appliance can be divided into two kinds. One is white appliances including: refrigerators, washing machines, and microwave ovens. The other is black appliances including TVs, videos, audios, VCDs and DVDs. [3] The use of computers, telecommunications and electronics technology is combined with the traditional home appliances, which brings more innovative products. More importantly, digital and network technology is used to designed more home appliances for more families, which become a part of people’s life. [4]

Information home appliances include PCs, set-top boxes, HPCs, DVDs, video game equipment, wireless data communication equipment, web TVs and Intemet phones. [3] These home appliances through the network interactive information system can be referred as information appliances. At present, video, audio and communication equipment is the primary components of information appliances. In addition, based on the traditional home appliances, information technology make has made the functions of traditional home appliances much more powerful, simpler, more convenient, and more practical, which creates creating a higher quality of living environment for families. For example, traditional TVs are transformed to digital TVs and refrigerators;, washing machines and microwave ovens are also digital, networked and intelligent information appliances. [5]

Information home appliances is the equipment designed by people who break out of innovate on some of the features of the PC and apply these features to more home audio-visual products, which accelerates the pace of stepping into the information age. Meanwhile, this equipment is with of sound functions, low prices and easy operation procedures. The appearance of information appliances will promote the development of home network market, which increases the popularization and application of information appliances.

3. Methodology of implementation

Controlling System

In order to solve the problem of connecting the internet of things and the controlling devices (e.g. smart mobile phones), the engineers have proposed of two wireless solutions. The first recommendation is to connect the things inside the house with Wi-Fi. With Wi-Fi, each object in the house would be allocated with a unique IP address and it is easy for the controlling server to locate each of the objects and send correct commands. The Wi-Fi is accessed to the Internet and the users are allowed to send directions from their mobile phones, which are also linked into the Internet. Wi-Fi consumes little energy and it is environment friendly [6]. The communication between the house owners and the objects is easy and fast. The second solution chosen in this projecy is the Bluetooth technology. The advantage of Bluetooth technology is that it adds the mesh networking to the internet of things inside the house, so that the network could extend through the house. And the solution chosen in this project is the Bluetooth technology.

The whole controlling signal system could be seen as two separate but interdependent subsystems: the controlling program on the mobile phones or computers and the electronic controlling circuit installed inside the house. The controlling program allows the user to communicate with and give instructions to the electronic controlling circuit. In this project, the development of both mobile phone application and computer program has been included. The experiment is conducted on a computer based controlling program. The electronic controlling circuit is the most important bridge between the user and the objects to be controlled. It is comprised of three components, which are the micro-controller, the Bluetooth module, and the integrated circuit. The micro-controller adopted for this smart home project is a product of ATMEGA, ATMEGA168P, which is a low power 32-bit micro-controller. The micro-controller serves the function of a computer, but much more limited, because it would be a waste to use a real computer to control the on and off function of the household equipment, and while the micro-controller is affordable and effective to support the experiment.

The Bluetooth module is the crux of making the objects able to receive and send Bluetooth signals. What has been applied in this experiment is the Texas Instruments’ LMX9838. The Bluetooth module could be connected to the objects inside the house with the USB port. The electoral appliances of the internet receive the signals from the micro-controller through the help of the Bluetooth modules. There are several significant usages of the modules: firstly, it gives provides each appliance with a unique serial number; secondly, it assigns a unique IP address to the each electrical appliance. In addition to the Bluetooth modules on the objects, the controlling devices (mobile phones and computers) also need the Bluetooth modules to send the signals. However, most current mobile phones and computers are innately installed with the Bluetooth modules and thus there will be no need to set a module for the controlling devices.

The relay driver integrated circuit (IC) is used to control the loads and the power supply of the objects inside the house. The declaration of the USBs (modules) and part of the codes for the micro-controller can be seen in the Appendix.

Equipment Setting

The setting of the equipment includes the construction of the physical controlling circuit and the internet of the objects. The equipment of this smart home system could be divided into two major parts: the controlling equipment and the controlled equipment. The controlling equipment is composed of the electronic controlling circuit and the controlling device, which is mobile phone in this case; whereas the controlled equipment is comprised of the electrical appliances that are common in the household. The details of the setting of each components of the smart home system are given in the list that is shown below.

1. micro-controller

The micro-controller selected for this project is the ATMEL, ATMEGA 168P. The full name of this micro-controller is Mini USB Leonardo Pro ATMEGA 168P AU  Development Board for Arduino. Other groups have finished writing the codes for the micro-controller, which is labeled as the Leonardo.h and Arduino.h. The controlling programs must be written into the micro-controller so that the controller could operate as it has been planned before. The program has been written on computer and with the Arduino IDE  software, the programs could be uploaded into the board. After the program has been uploaded, the board could be kept away until the whole controlling circuit is to be constructed [7].

2. Bluetooth module

The Bluetooth module is an important part of the controlling circuit as well. The chosen Bluetooth module for this project is the LMX9838, which is made by the Texas Instruments. The program to control the signals sent by the Bluetooth module has been uploaded into the micro-controller previously. And, and it needs to be connected with the micro-controller in reliable way. The Bluetooth module could be soldered onto the micro-controller chip so that the electronic signals from the controller could beare received by the module correctly.

3. The construction of the controlling circuit

As it is shown in the picture, the controlling circuit consists of three parts, which are the micro-controller, the Bluetooth modules and the relay driver integrated circuit. These three parts are connected with wires. There are pins that could be used to fix the components on each part other. The simple pinning of the chips might cause poor contact during the practices and thus results in interruption. Thus, the equipment group has soldered the components of the controlling circuit together.

4. The electrical appliances

In this project, due to the restriction of the budget, the equipment that the group has prepared for three household electrical appliances that have been innately installed with the Bluetooth modules. If the appliance does not have the Bluetooth function, it would add extra works to of writinge specific controlling programs for each of them appliance. The selected appliances are all easily found in house or on shopping websites. There are fans, lamps, and one curtain. They have been disconnected from previous controller and waiting for the configuration of the new controlling system.

5. The mobile phone

The mobile phone controlling program is written for the Android phones, considering the openness of the operating system of the phones. This is an old Samsung cell phone that has been provided by one of the group members. The operating system of this cell phone is Android. The controlling Android application is offered by other groups, and it has been sealed in the form of APK file previously. The equipment group only havegroup only has to copy the file into the mobile phone and install it as did other applications are installed. After installation, the phone would be checked by operating other apps to see if there is any malfunction of it.

6. The configuration of the system

The configuration of the system is to connect all of the parts together and to ensure that all these parts are connected properly that the signals and the commands could be perfectly received. The controlling circuit has been assembled and installed, so the first step of configuration is to connect the mobile phone with the controlling circuit. If the Bluetooth module of the controlling circuit has been installed correctly, the phone should be able to detect the signal of the circuit and automatically connect with it. The connecting of the electrical appliances and the integrated circuit is similar.

System Experiment

After the system has been constructed, the system must be tested in scientific experiment so that the reliability and the practicality of this smart home system could be proved. There are five electrical appliances installed in the system for the experiment. The number of the appliances is highly limited and this is because the system is still immature and the restriction is of restricted by the experimental condition. After other groups have finished the programming of the micro-controller and the integrated circuits, the context and interpretation, and the controlling program coding, our equipment group is able to construct the whole system, including the hardware and the software.

There are three parts of the experiment. The first part is to examine the Bluetooth connection between the mobile phone and the controlling circuit. In this step, the electrical appliances could be shut down and replaced with LED lights, which are linked with the relays of the relay driver IC. The test is to switch from the mobile phone and to see if the lights would could be turned on and off.

The second part is to examine the feasibility of the controlling circuit. In this step, the relays are still linked with the LED lights. The user could send directions to three different lights individually. This step is to ensure the commands could control the specific light perfectly. The test would be done for the three lights separately. If all lights are controlled as intended, then this part is fulfilled.

The third part of the experiment is to check if the controlled electrical appliances work correctly and effectively. The controlling of the light is the simplest one because there are only two statuses of the light: on or off. If the light work as the user of phone intends, then the light is controlled perfectly.

4. System Performance Analysis

The performance of the system would be presented in the three parts as it has been explained above. For the first part, the lights do react to the commands given from the application on the mobile phone, and this has proved that the connection between the mobile phone’s Bluetooth module and that of the controlling circuit is in normal state.

Then, the tester has given commands from the mobile phone to control each specific light to see if the controlling circuit has been programmed correctly to send out the right commands, which are received from the mobile phone and has been resent by the micro-controller and the IC. The test has shown that the controlling commands coming through the controlling circuit have not been altered or misrepresented.

5. Conclusion

The smart home is an influential and practicable concept in nowadays. Through the network technology, smart home will house a variety of equipments. Smart home not only has includes the traditional living functions but also has provides automatic equipment that provided with a variety of convenient functions and a full range of high technologies. This project has set out to construct a primary and fundamental smart home network using the technology of Bluetooth to communicate between the controller and the appliances. The equipment group has been in charge for the development of the programs, controlling the micro-controller and the different modules. The mimic experiment on computer has proved the codes to be correct and the real experiment has proved the construction of the whole smart home system to be well-calibrated.
