According to a study of the American Institute of employment policy, if the minimum wage rose to $ 9.80 an hour, then at least 467,500 workers would lose their jobs, let alone the minimum wage rise to $ 15.00. (Rebitzer, James, and Lowell, 253) While it is widely accepted by the public that increase of minimum wage has a significant impact on employment for young people, some experts have been unable to unify opinions on whether low wages lead to declining employment. Thus, this view remains to be discussed.
Another negative effect is a view from a macro perspective. The increasing minimum wage may bring tremendous cost pressure to some important enterprises in US. In the most competitive industry, for instance, fast-food industry, they are always in intense competition because of thin profit. If hourly wage increased, probably the fast food restaurants would make up for the loss in hiring expenses from customers. Namely, they will add up the prices of burgers, fries, ice-creams and other popular products. Therefore, it will create a vicious cycle, and do harm to national economy by days and years.
Although the policy has many disadvantages, it contributes as well. Firstly, a fact that needs to be clearly recognized that there are a lot of people in US who make a living by government guaranteeing without jobs. Hence, the increased minimum wage means the costs for not working enhance. (Brown, Charles , Curtis, and Andrew, 3-4) So there would be a trend that a large number of labor force are supposed to be involved in the market. Meanwhile, higher minimum wage promotes the productivity by eliminating some enterprises of low efficiency. So for those efficient enterprises, they will obtain a larger market which finally contributes to the country and citizens.
As regards of the life of common people, $ 15.00 minimum wage only benefits a group of people who have low education and usually live as manual labor. Higher minimum will definitely improve the qualities of their lives, but commodity price will increase in pace with the minimum wage. It is clear to see that $ 15.00 minimum wage is not fair to the mere well-off families. Thereupon, I cannot agree with the idea that the individuals who want to increase the federal minimum wage to $ 15.00 per hour. At the same time, raising the minimum wage to $ 15.00 still remains many aspects to consider about, including the government capacity, economic market, political factors and so on.
To sum up, the raise of minimum wage is not only a question of economics, but also a political issue. In the United States, the process to determine the federal minimum wage is always mixed with politics. Thence, President Obama needs to play a key role in how to balance this issue between political and economic fields.
