Identity Politics in Postwar Japan: An Annotated Bibliography
This annotated bibliography presents related studies on the complex configuration of identity during 1945 and 2000, discussing the formation of new identity and the transformation of old identity.

(1) Dower, John W. Embracing defeat: Japan in the wake of World War II. New York: WW Norton & Company, 2000.
a) John W. Dower is an American historian specialized in Japan. He earned his Ph.D. in History and Far Eastern Languages from Harvard University in 1972, and he is emeritus professor of Japanese history. He has published extensive works of modern Japan history, and Embracing defeat won the Pulitzer Prize and the 1999 National Book Award. W. W. Norton & Company is an employee-owned publisher that also publishes college textbooks and professional books.
b) This monograph discusses the period between August 1945 and April 1952, during which Japan was occupied by the Allies. The author tries to reach a balanced standpoint to depict the history at that time.
c) This book follows a chronological order to portray the post-war Japan, providing a panorama of postwar Japan’s society. The author mainly discuss the triumph and the take-over of the Allied, “the culture of defeat”, the revolution, the new democracy and the guilt in this period, showing how the Japan was actually “embracing defeat” and remaking post-war society at that time.

(2) Dierkes, Julian. Postwar history education in Japan and the Germanys: Guilty lessons. London: Routledge, 2010.
(a) Julian Dierkes got his sociology Ph.D. at Princeton University. Now he is associate professor in Japanese Research Institute of Asian Research, University of British Columbia. He has published articles and works about the education of postwar Japan. Routledge is a British multinational publisher that focuses on academic publishing, and is claimed to be the largest global academic publisher within humanities and social sciences. This book is selected into the Routledge Contemporary Japan Series.
(b) The author tries to understand how the history was re-enacted in post-war Japan and Germanys, and he draws on a historical perspective of sociology of knowledge, which tries to place the historical knowledge in a larger social context and tries to be balanced and objective.
(c) This book provides a sociological inquiry of the historiography after 1945 in the two defeated countries. He analyzes the social patterns, textbook discourse and circulation and find that the Japanese historiography is in a empirical mode; he also compare the historiography in Eastern Germany , Western Germany and Japan to find that the specific genesis of power shaped the configuration of history and identity in these three country.
(d) According to the author, “portrayals of national history as an element in identity formation” (6). This work helps me understand how the postwar Japanese identity was formed and transformed by the historical education designed by the state.

(3) Yamamoto, Mari. Grassroots pacifism in post-war Japan: the rebirth of a nation. London: Routledge, 2004.
(a) Mari Yamamoto got her Ph.D. at Oxford University. Routledge is a British multinational academic publisher.
(b) The author mainly discusses the history of pacifism and people’s response to peace in postwar Japan, and the author mainly focuses on worker movement and women’s peace movement, so the diversity of the discussed group may be not comprehensive enough. But the author tries to make use of comprehensive materials and discuss the different involved patterns, which is able to reduce the bias in her work.
(c) The author discusses the postwar pacifism following a chronological approach, providing an explanation of the dynamics and transformation of pacifism in post war Japan. The author makes use of textual materials, TV programs and interviews to discuss how different groups, peace movement and women movement shape the ideal of peace, and the author gradually reach the conclusion that finally “peace was an apt word to summarize the nation’s new post-war ideal” (214). 
(d) This monograph enables me to rethink “peace” as an ideology and identity in postwar Japan. After 1945, peace gradually became an ideology in Japan, and as the author indicates, there were more and more people considering their identity as pacifist. In this way, I am able to deal with the complex spectrum of identity in post-war Japan.

(4) Hoppens, Robert. The China Problem in Postwar Japan: Japanese National Identity and Sino-Japanese Relations. London and New York: Bloomsbury Publishing, 2015.
(a) Robert Hoppens is the assistant professor department of history, University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. He focuses on contemporary Japanese history and the Sino-Japan relation. He is also the author of Bloomsbury Publishing is an independent publisher, and owned an academic and professional publishing division that won the Bookseller Industry Award for Academic, Educational & Professiyonal Publisher in both 2013 and 2014. This book is selected as one of the SOAS Studies in Modern and Contemporary Japan Series.
(b) The author tries to deal with the history of international relation in a balanced tone involving the practice of America, China and Japan and to reduce the bias from every country.
(c) The author uses materials from both Japan and China to discuss how the relationship between Japan and China was formed and how this relationship influenced the identity in postwar Japan, and the author reach the conclusion that Japan’s relations with China serves as a way of imagining Japanese nation’s space in international stage and the Japanese national character.
(d) That the author discusses how the international relation shaped the national identity in Japan after 1945 inspires me to place the transformation of modern Japanese identity in a global scale, and consider how the international forces influence the national identity.

(5) Kovner, Sarah. Occupying power: Sex workers and servicemen in postwar Japan. Stanford, CA: Stanford University Press, 2012.
(a) Sarah Kovner is a senior research scholar at the Arnold A. Saltzman Institute of War and Peace Studies at Columbia University. She specializes in modern Japan. This book is her first monograph and won the Southeast Conference of the Association of Asian Studies book prize for 2014. Stanford University Press is a University press that has published many high-quality academic works.
(b) In this book, the author tries to portray the historical contradiction among sex workers, government, Allied Occupation, law and society. She tries to give voices to different sides involved in the transformation of prostitution, providing an objective history.
(c) The author uses a chronological approach to discuss how prostitution, an area that used to be “highly regulated and even ritualized” (152) , remade itself in a cultural network of sex workers, police and law, and the author also shows that women could be worse off when the state tried to forbid prostitution.
(d) This book enables me to understand how sexual identity was transformed in Japan after 1945. Apart from national identity and political identity, sexual identity is also important in understanding identity politics. For example, the book vividly shows the self-identification of female legislators, which is an interesting case for my study.

(6) Gerteis, Christopher. Gender struggles: wage-earning women and male-dominated unions in postwar Japan. Cambridge, MA: Harvard University Press, 2009.
(a) Christopher Gerteis is senior lecturer in the history of contemporary Japan. He focuses on modern Japanese history, and is also the co-editor of Japan since 1945: from Postwar to Post-Bubble. Harvard University Press is a distinguished university press that has published many academic works in humanities and social science. 
(b) The author provides a history of the gender relationship after 1945, and tries to stay balanced by discussing both the self-independent woman and the male’s culture.
(c) The authors focuses on the struggle of wage-earning women after 1945, depicting their struggles as teachers and coal wives, the struggles within family unions and the struggles in politics issues, showing how women’s role and identity in postwar Japan was deeply influence by notions of class and gender.
(d) The author also discusses the formation of sexual identity in post-war Japan, but he discusses a more general issue, that is, the working-class and the lower middle class women. This work enables me to think about the relationship between gender relationship and identity formation in the post-1945 Japan.

(7) McCormack, Gavan. "Nationalism and identity in post-Cold War Japan."Pacifica Review: Peace, security & global change 12.3 (2000): 247-263.
(a) Gavan McCormack is emeritus professor at Division of Pacific and Asian History of the Australian National University. He is also a coordinator of an award-winning journal The Asia-Pacific Journal: Japan Focus. As a Japanese specialist, he has written and edited many research works including Japanese Imperialism Today: Co-prosperity in Greater East Asia. Pacifica Review: Peace, Security & Global Change is published by the academic publisher Taylor & Francis Group and is a refereed journal that deals with practical and theoretical issues in contemporary world.
(b) This paper is a survey into the national identity transformation in the 1990s Japan, and the author tries to carefully portray the transformation of national identity with historical evidence.
(c) The author tries to position the transformation of national identity in the 1990s in a larger political and economic context, suggesting that the stagnation of social-political development, the contradiction between national identity and national path and Japan’s dependence on America pose great threat to the national identity.

(8) Angst, Linda. "Gendered nationalism: the Himeyuri story and Okinawan identity in postwar Japan." PoLAR 20 (1997): 100.
(a) Linda Angst has joined Oxford College at Emory University in 2013, and she is an anthropologist specialized in gender, national identity, history and memory, and Okinawa, Japan, and she is also the author of the historical anthropology monograph, In a Dark Time: Memory, Community, and Gendered Nationalism in Postwar Okinawa. PoLAR, short for Political and Legal Anthropology Review, is a peer-reviewed SSCI journal that focuses on nationalism, citizenship and other political issues.
(b) This paper tries to provide a historical analysis of the convergence of national identity and sexual identity with historical evidences, including the textual materials and the lived experiences of the people in postwar Japan.
