Since she was a little child, she never needed to cook because whenever she offered to cook for her family or to buy vegetables for the family, her father would tell her, “you need to focus on studying and it you do not study well, cooking will not get you anywhere.” Also, whenever she was walking on the street and every time when Alicia and her parents encounter a street cleaner, her father and mother would tell her, “my dear daughter, if you do not study well, you will end up being this street cleaner.”
When Alicia was little, she did not understand what the problem is if she becomes a street cleaner, so she asked her father, “Is it bad to become a street cleaner? Is this job illegal or immoral? ”
Usually, her father would correct her, “No, it is not an illegal job, but don’t you see? This guy had to wake up early in the morning and when it is summer, he will be sweaty all over and his shirts are so dirty.”

Alicia is the typical Chinese girl being raised in the Chinese way. She was taught that a successful person needs to work in the office and get a lot of money. Her parents are like any other Chinese parents who want their kids to understand that the only standard to judge if a person is successful is to see whether this person is wealthy or not. She was convinced that she would be a total “failure” if she ended up working on the street.
However, the biggest problem of Chinese parenting and education is that students are taught with a lot of knowledge. Many Chinese students are able to remember all countries on the world map and they can remember all the historical events such as when the world war two happened or which nations had participated in the war. However, the failure is that most students under such parenting and educational system are mentally weak, which means that whenever they face little problems, they would be devastated.
For Alicia, she is the typical Chinese student deeply influenced by the educational system in the nation. She always gets the highest score in the class but she does not know how to deal with real life issues.
However, she had a neighbor who is called Lily. Lily’s mother grew up from Europe so she always taught her daughter to act like the western girls who are independent and sometimes, she asked her daughter Lily to help her with her house work. On the contrary, Alicia never took out the trash in her whole life because she was too busy focusing on studying.
It was October in 2010 and the notice of Alicia and Lily were announced on the internet. It was a real bummer for Alicia and her entire family because she had been admitted by a university far away from home in the major photography. It was the worse day for the parents of Alicia because they kept complaining that this major was hopeless as they believed it is ridiculous for a girl to dedicate herself in the career of “taking pictures on the street or in a store.” For the entire month before Alicia went to the university to sign up for her courses, she kept crying because her entire family looked gloomy and they kept complaining that it was a waste for her to study so many years just to “take pictures like those without education.”
On the contrary, Lily happened to go to the same major as Alicia in the same university, which means that they will be classmates. However, for her mother, she was very pleased at her daughter’s achievement and encouraged her to try to be creative in learning this new skill in the university. They are on the same floor but Alicia’s family was depressed very often and at their home, people could only hear complaints and arguments. For Lily, when people visited her home, they were all happy about her new life in the university.
Finally September came, Lily and Alicia went to the university together and it was fortunate that they became roommates. It was the first time for Alicia to live so far away from her parents. Therefore, it meant that they were no longer able to cook for her and wash the dishes for her. On the first night, she did not want to wash her clothes so she put them all in a barrel and carried them to the washing machine on the same floor. After an hour or so, when the machine stopped beeping, she assumed that she had finished washing clothes, so she took them all out.
Suddenly, she yelled out, “why are they still so smelly!?”
Lily heard her yelling and went close to her, after a few seconds, she asked her, “well, did you put washing power in the washing machine?”
Alicia looked all confused and asked her, “why do I need to put the washing powder in the machine? The machine itself can function, isn’t it? ”
“Actually, no.” Lily smiled and continued, “The machine only functions like your hands, with greater power. However, it does not contain any washing powder or lotion that helps you get rid the oil of your clothes.” In the end, Lily helped Alicia to wash her clothes, which Alicia felt ashamed about. Apparently, she had more “knowledge” than Lily. For example, she could remember all big words in English and in other languages which Lily was not able to do. However, when it comes to practical stuff like washing the clothes or cleaning the toilet, Alicia could not do them better than Lily.
When the new term began, they had to visit different places to take pictures as their professors required them to. However, Alicia has been well taken care of at home and she was so spoiled that she did not want to go out just because she did not want to get tanned. However, their professors asked everyone to take more than one hundred pictures at the end of the semester.
Lily enjoyed going everywhere to take pictures as she is fond of exploring the new world and getting to know more knowledge. Sometimes, in order to take a picture from a good angel, she would even take or Single Lens Camera to climb up on a tree in order to shoot the best picture. Therefore, Lily has improved her skills greatly in photographing and photo editing for a short time. However, for Alicia, she was too lazy to go out because she believed that it was a waste of time. Due to the deep impact of the Chinese education, she preferred to stay in the dorm to learn theories and recite words. As for her assignment, she downloaded pictures from the internet to hand them in as her own pictures.
However, it was surprising that the on the day when they handed in their photos, their professor required all of them to take a few pictures in front of him. For Lily, she did it with great ease because she was skillful in doing such a job. However, Alicia was so frightened because the single lens camera was too complicated for her to turn it on. She fumbled on the camera for a few minutes and the professor yelled at her, “Haven’t you take all the pictures in this term?! How come you do not even know how to use a camera!”
Alicia felt hopeless and she was so afraid that she will fail the course. However, Lily stood up and talked to the professor, “Sir, she did take all the pictures because we did it together. However, she used another camera at that time so she did not know how to use this one.” Due to her explanation, the professor let Alicia pass the exam.
After that, she was very grateful to her friend but her friend taught her that as long as she was willing to work hard on improving her skills in photography, she could also be successful as in China, people lack a real inventor with new ideas. From then on, Alicia started learning taking pictures carefully, in hope of becoming a famous photographer in famous organizations.
