Mad Men is a really successful TV series in the history of America. Though it did not get so much attention of the audience, it harvested a lot of prizes in the area of TV shows. In my opinion, the success of Mad Menis contributed to its profound theme and delicate production of TV plays and primarily it can be said to be contributed to its vivid description of characters. Mad Men attempts to reflex the complex social relations and moral relations of human through the behavior and language of various characters. Among so many characters that have various personalities, I am more interested in the leading actor Don Draper. The reason I choose Don Draper as my favorite character is that this leading role is far more complicated than others and thus much more interesting and worth thinking over.

From the first episode, as the protagonist of Mad Men, the complexity of Don is already showed to us. He was born in a brothel during the period of Great Depression, whose mother was a prostitute, and he was the son of an unknown client of his mother. What’s worse, his original name was Dick Wittman, which is so humiliating. Then Don was brought upin apoor farm of countryside by brutal stepfather. Having grown up in such a terrible condition, Don, on the one hand, was full of sense of being abandoned and despised because of his name and his underprivileged identity; on the other hand, the lack of education and the terrible environment helped Don aware of the important moral principle of survival. In order to get rid of such a nightmare and survive, Don took the opportunity to take advantage of the identity of the dead captain in the Korean War. By disguising as a hero in the battlefield, Don received the opportunity of reeducation and in the end became a professional and famous person in the area of advertising. As we can imagine, what is flocking to him is money, status, and family. From this perspective, it is obvious that Don's childhood influenced the attitude he held towards the society and the way he behaved in work and life. In this way, Don gradually formed his own principle of survival.

To be specific, Don’s principle of survival is reflected in many aspects of his work. He showed his excellent skills and sober mind when faced with his clients and boss. He attached great importance to talents and he was not bureaucratic at all, so he could get along with his employees as friends, which makes his boss Roger Sterling quite jealous. That is also why Don kept standing by the side of Peggy without regard of Pete’s provocation and why he could chat and drink like good friends with his boss Roger Sterling but at the same time made Roger embarrassed in front of clients to punish the misbehavior of Roger to his wife. From all above, the principle of survival seems to be a little bit cruel, but his coldness towards this world is originated from his miserable childhood, when he fell down the stairs and his step father only asked him to get on his feet by himself without any emotions. In addition, he gained his inspiration about adverting words on the bed of his lovers and he would deny his misbehaviors in front of his clients.

Moreover,Don sometimes showed a side of hypocrisy. For example, he always felt like that he was an honest man in front of Rogers Sterling; in front of Joan, he thought that he always behaved gently; he called his two ex-wives “prostitutes”. But in fact, Don himself was not a little bit better than those characters that exchanged money with body. He sometimes played the role of male prostitute and even the role of pimp that forced others to prostitute. He was forced to keep affair with the wife of comedy star Bobbie because she controlled one of the clients of his company- UTZ Potato Chips so that she took advantage of this business to threaten Don and maintained their relationship. What’s more, Dontolerated that Lee Garner Jr turned the Christmas party of the company into a promiscuous sex party and send out the year-end bonus as promiscuous money to employees, and even forced Roger Sterling to put on the embarrassing costume of Santa Claus and took photos.

The contradict behaviors of Don reflect in many aspects. For instance, he asked Ryan to resign for forgery signatures and requirement for salary in advance but he did not realize that his behavior of stealing the identity of the captain in general is in same nature; he was very cold to his brother who asked him for help, but he was very kind Anna Draper who helped him hide his true identity; he asked his two wives to be loyal to their marriage but he had a lot of affairs with other women. In fact, this double standard that Don was carrying out throughout his life obviously is egoism. Theft of identity, love affair and appeasing the Anna Draper can make himself satisfied and maintain his own interests. On the contrary, when others may do the same things that may harm his interests, he would punish them and prevent it from happening. Don's selfishness is also reflected in his desire to control women. For example, he suspected his wife of infidelity and heated the comedy star bitterly in public and insulted the intimate scenes without reasons.

In a word, Don, this character is the most vivid one in this TV series because it reflects many themes of this series, such as egoism, hypocrisy and double standard. This leading role is far more realistic than other roles, for it is very true and it reveals the very real nature of human beings. However, except Don, other characters of Mad Men also have their own personalities which help the evolvement of story and the presence of the themes.
