This book narrated a story of a young man named Holden Caulfield who was born in a wealthy middle-class family. Teachers and families forced him to learn hard in order to be successful and earn a lot of money. But in school, what he did all day was talking about women, alcohol and sex. Furthermore he detested everything all around and had no desire to study. Therefore, he was always being punished. At the fourth time being dismissed, he was afraid to go home. So he lived in a small inn, wandered alone in prosperous street, and visited nightclubs. Besides, he spent time in cinemas to waste time, unwittingly recruited prostitutes, and cannot help playing with vanity girls. At the same time, his heart was very depressed and he just wanted to escape the hypocritical adult world to find purity and truth. Such extreme mental irreconcilable contradiction made him collapsed eventually and finally he lay in a mental hospital. This is a sad book considering its ending. Holden did not become what he wanted to be-the catcher in the rye, instead he lived a terrible life in the process of growing up. This book is not only giving a pessimistic story, but also inspiring readers how hypocritical the society is.

At the beginning of reading this book, I don’t feel very fond because almost every paragraph contains dirty words like "fuck" or "darn", which is different from other famous books. In addition, after finishing half of the book, I still don’t find anything that is related to the Catcher or the Rye. But, I think, since author can use this as the book’s title, there must have some reasons. So I continue to read with the question what exactly The Catcher in the Rye means. In fact, I don’t like the protagonist Holden at first due to his rudeness. “He came over and sat down on the arm of Stradlater's chair... you either froze to death or died of the heat (Salinger, 12).” This brief passage occurs after Holden has returned to his dorm room and is being pestered by Ackley that can show he is decadent, passive, and his utterances full of dirty words that all made him unbearable and unaccepted by me. However, with the deep thinking of the story, I gradually discover the reason why Holden is anxious, rebellious, and cynical. The environment deprives him optimism and turns him to become depressed, sad, and sick. Under the pressure, he has no choice but to hide his sensitive, fragile and kind heart gradually.
Perhaps, Holden looks like an extravagant, ignorant and passive gay who complaint at all time. He seemingly denies everything and suspects everyone. But if you meticulously taste the book, you would find he is actually innocent and kind. He knows how to appreciate and how to love that why his emotion was abundant. In the depth of his heart, happiness is greatly expected and desired that makes him a real living child who follows his heart. “I’m standing on the edge of some crazy cliff. What I have to do, I have to catch everybody if they start to go over the cliff-I mean if they’re running and they don’t look where they’re going I have to come out from somewhere and catch them. (Salinger, 93).” This is the sentence he gives to his little sister. From this passage, we could imagine that Holden extremely expects the happiness, but it is so far away. He just wants to leave that impetuous place, to find a pure rye and to live a simple life with simple happiness. However, this little simple wish is very difficult to achieve, that makes the sadness from Holden.

After reading the “Catcher in the Rye”, I feel the 16-year-old high school student is very similar to the people around me who are sensitive, tolerant, irritable, anxious, and impulsive. He is a true portrayal of our mood, and he does all the things that we want to do but afraid to do. Sometimes, I hope to be a Catcher in the Rye like Holden who could guard people around with heart, but it is what I can only think of. Like Holden said: “The best thing, though, in that museum was that everything always stayed right where it was. The only thing that would be different would be you (Salinger, 65).” We all endure this society and that causes us to abandon the dream for the career. Moreover, we have to accept this society is not so bright as preached. The real side and dark side are coexistent and that makes the truth hard to cover up no matter how truthful the lies and deception looks like. Even we make our own efforts to change the world, it still needs to go through years of time, so we can only do our best for the world. We always want to be a watcher to save people, and in fact, we hope that much more. When we rush towards the cliff, at the moment we fell, there could be a catcher who is from nowhere can stop us.

The author describes the ordinary but thought-provoking story by the personal statement from Holden. It describes his own thoughts, behaviors and what he has seen and heard with the tone of a teenager. Also, it criticizes the vision of the adult world about the hypocrisy and deception. In addition, this book clings to the psychological characteristics of adolescent to show Holden’s innocence and indulgence. On the use of language, it is creative to use teen’s straightforward tone with no taboo privacy. “I saw one guy, a gray-haired, very distinguished-looking guy with only his shorts on, do something you wouldn't believe me if I told you…They were in hysterics the whole time, like it was the funniest thing that ever happened (Salinger, 33-34).” This passage describes a group of creepy people who lived in Edmont Hotel that shows the reality of the sick society. In addition, so much spoken language is used that could increase the appeal of the book and made it lively, approachable to arouse the resonance.

Each of us once to be a “Holden” because we all have a youth period with sense of sensitive, timid, fragile and impulsive. Even though we have been into the society for many years, some of us still struggle for its hypocrisy and darkness. However everyone needs to experience socialization and needed to learn more about the vulgarity and hypocrisy as soon as possible in the process of being pushed into the decadent community, like what Holden’s teacher has said: “The whole arrangement's designed for men who, at some time or other in their lives, were looking for something their own environment couldn't supply them with. So they gave up looking. They gave it up before they ever really even got started (Salinger, 101).” We struggle between beauty and ugliness, desire and disgust. This process fills with anguish, as we educate our children to be honest but have to teach them the skills of lying at the same time. The former is the essence of life and the later is the need for surviving.

The catcher in the rye is a depressed book with a sorrowful ending. Moreover it describes the essence of the life as a cruel and unmerciful society in the process of Holden’s growth. It makes me feel sad because it tells out how we used to grow up.
