In 1492 when Columbus sailed to Northern America for the first time in human history, it started a new page of human interaction. It could be narrowly defined as an initial start of globalization, as an isolated continent started to trade with the world. However, not until the past few decades, with the advent of Internet, convenient transportation and prospering economy did globalization started booming. By efficient investment, low-priced labor, abundant local resources, as well as cooperation with local capital, the economy and technology develops to a scale unlike before.. Globalization exerts a deep influence in every aspect of our life. KFC, Amazon and Hollywood movies played in China are all products under the background of globalization. Exchange student, the booming for further study abroad and frequent academic visits could also exemplify it. In the college, the most evident proof of the globalization is food and languages.

People from different countries gather in a small area, which would have different requirements upon food and enlarge the menu. People from different religions expect different food in terms of their religious exercise. The most conspicuous example is Islamic food. As Islamic students reject pigs, then any food related to pork or lard would stay away from their table. I suppose that pigs are their religious totem. But actually it is just because they regard pigs as dirty animals. Some students who believe in Buddhism would distance themselves from meat, as they deem a vegetarian life style a means to prolong life and curb appetite. Besides religious practice, to satisfy students bred from other culture, the food menu would enlarge to a great degree that one could possibly taste any characteristic food in a college canteen. China is hometown to food. A lot of friends sing highly praise of Chinese food. pork chops with sweet and sour sauce, pork with preserved vegetable, boiled salted duck and plain noodle are greatly admired by some foreign students. When Chinese students go abroad for study, they would also find it amazing to eat some beefsteak, especially medium beefsteak with little blood spilled on the surface. Furthermore, Arabic food, Korean pickle, Japanese food and Indian food would just meet your hunger for the tasty food. It is so much as one is on the journey to the other countries through food. As it is a great part of local culture, one could appreciate how the food formed in accordance with local history development. Globalization made it possible for a small group of people to taste awesome food in a small college.

In addition to food, languages spoken around could also point directly at globalization. The globalization requires a world language, namely English, which provide a great tool for interaction among students from Non-English-speaking countries. It is human nature to seek familiarity when he surrounds himself with a different language and culture, otherwise, he would suffer some kind of identity loss, which would cause anxiety, stress and homesickness. Then when a group of students from the same country accumulate together, they tend to speak their mother language. it is an unavoidable pulse. When I meet my Chinese friends, I would love to speak Chinese. When some Japanese gather after school, they speak Japanese. When some Spanish students stay together, Spanish is the only language one could hear of. For one reason, by their mother language, they could seek some kind of culture cognition symbol, which would bring them together from the heart. For another, mother language is always easier than a second language. One could almost speak it without any hesitation, as you could speak anything you want. But when it comes to a second language, a language transformation or interpretation would occur in mind. It takes tremendous efforts to accustom oneself to speaking another language fluently through practice. But mother language is acquired unconsciously. Therefore, one would find himself surrounded by a pool of languages.

Then the question arises whether language barriers would become the hurdle to normal communication. It is understandable that a Chinese student would feel isolated if he has some problems apprehending some foreigners, or embarrassing that he mistakes what others mean. Once, when I ask some teachers to take photos with students, to express my thanks, I say something like” thanks for your cooperation.” Then the teacher joked that we were not in a railway station. Honestly, I felt a little embarrassed as the language I used appeared too formal. People could understand what I want to say, but they find it weird in that situation. But such embarrassment and confusion are inevitable in the interaction with foreigners. However, it is up to us whether it would become a psychological barrier to communication. It is only through learning, mistake, feedback and adjustment could we acquire a second language. Sometimes, it would become a hurdle when one suddenly interferes in some Spanish students speaking Spanish. But out of courtesy, nine out of ten would tune into English.

The language is the coat of the mind, and the fundamental differences in globalization is about how people from different countries value, judge and compromise. It is not a matter of which is best or worst, but which could release human mind and encourage him to pursue valuable life. In a report, it is pointed that World War 2 was undoubtedly the most deadly war in the history of mankind. Fifty million people lost their lives. Germany with their Nazi leader, Adolf Hitler, was the country most responsible for starting the war. In the world war two, as German thought so little of other ethics, and so highly of Nordic people that they declared war against Jews, English people and others. The narrow nationalism should not grab the attention of the majority. In the world village, only by learning from each other could a nation thrive on the competition.

In the college, it is admirable that people would show their loyalty to their own country, but debatable that those who boost patriotism deject other culture. They are just deemed as a group of arrogant, conceited and ignorant people. When I discussed with a Japanese student about world war two, despite its acknowledged injustice, the student argued that it was out of Japan’s benevolence to build a prosperous Asia, judged by the philosophy that ends could justify the means. According to Social Cognitive Theory, from its inception one core premise within SCT has been that people learn through observation. This process is also described as vicarious learning or modeling because learning is a result of watching the behavior and consequences of models in the environment. Probably he was born with the belief that the war was justifiable, then he would try his best to rationalize his beliefs, as it is human nature to seek accordance between action and beliefs.

Besides, it would be exciting to discuss Chinese traditional value with foreign friends. It just provides me an opportunity to reflect upon the value I acquired unconsciously in my growth, because they would find it amazing to accept such values. For example, when it comes to the comparison between personal dignity and money, some saga would prefer the former. Mengzi, a great Confucianist in ancient China, maintained that if money available broke the code of personal behavior, then it would not be accepted. My foreign friends provoked my thought by the question whether, if a person raised illiterate, without any access to the value or ability to curb the appetite, he would prefer dignity to money. It is not a matter of code, but about a self regulation and moral education. Those who can act on such a moral code are admirable, but those who cannot are understandable. The interaction with foreigners indicates a crash of ideas and minds. It is exciting and worthy; because such interaction expands one’s eyes how others think of the world.

In a college, it is just as if we are not living local, but universal through exotic food we could have access to , through languages we are exposed to, and through culture crash we encounter. Globalization is a theme of the age. The conflict is inevitable, but also solvable. In such an age, it is of essence to reflect upon a narrow nationalism, and seize the chance to learn from other nations. Through cross-boundary, cross-cultural communication we could acquire a new language, cultivate a broad mindset and begin a great life.
