The outbreak of the debt crisis had a huge negative effect on the world financial system, this essay will from three aspects to elaborate on the how it impacted the world financial system.
The depreciation of the euro
First of all, the debt crisis has a direct, short-term impact on euro as an international reserve currency (Flandreau, Gaillard and Packer, 2011), euro became less attractive, international capital fled from euro area. This not only makes the economy in euro zone go into a mild recession, but also affects other countries’ financial order. For example, many investors converted their funds into Swiss francs, resulting in pushing up the exchange rate of Swiss franc, which has a serious impact on Swiss exports.
Liquidity crisis
Secondly, the debt crisis brought European banks huge losses, the banks were forced to carry out operation contraction on a global scale, the euro zone's investment in emerging economies decreased. According to statistics, only in 2011 euro-zone countries’ investment in emerging economies declined 45% (Collignon, 2012), the economic development of emerging economies was affected largely.
Financial supervision reform
Finally, after the outbreak of debt crisis, various countries have accelerated the process of financial supervision reform, specific measures include the creation of systemic risk regulator, the implementation of macro-prudential supervision, comprehensively strengthened financial risk control, strengthened regulation of rating agencies, etc. For example, after the debt crisis, EU established the European Systemic Risk Board (ESRB) to be responsible for monitoring the possible macro risks that may arise in EU’s financial markets.
