Task B
Social-cognitive theory is instructive for the gambling addiction problem. In terms of social cognitive theory, beliefs and expectancies, goals, evaluative standards as well as skills are the four critical parts of personality. As a result, we are able apply these four elements to illustrate gambling behavior. Through watching the video, we are conscious that when people begin to gamble, they are convinced that gambling is acceptable, a way to get fun. According to the social cognitive theory, our beliefs are able to determine our behaviors or decisions. The wrong beliefs the gamblers hold have caused them to step into a regretful and unfortunate life- addiction to gambling. In addition, social cognitive theory presents that goals are able to control human being’s behavior. Most people involved in gambling expect that they are able to get fun or easy money when gambling. Such obscure expectations and aims have led them to be addicted to gambling. Furthermore, evaluative standards are responsible for the guidance of our actions since evaluative standards refer to our internal beliefs on what things are supposed to be. For gamblers, they are in pursuit of mental excitement, viewing gambling as an entertainment rather than harm to themselves; as a result, their internal emotions haunting their minds drive them to stick to gambling. They do not realize that gambling is an illegal behavior; thus, they continue this behavior consciously regarding it is legal.
Under such circumstance, the following measures can be put into effect so as to change their behaviors. First and foremost, we should eradicate the gamblers’ wrong and anchored beliefs that gambling is a way of seeking fun or making money. Take the case of Jake as an example. He virtually did not get fun from gambling. The moment he lost 10,000 pounds, he went down-spirited. In addition, he stated that he was suffering form panic or fear in that he had to keep a feeling of excitement all the time. Thus, if we are determined to prevent people from gambling, we are supposed to let him know that gambling is not a proper or effective way to have fun. Next, we should render individuals know that it is out of the question to reach their expectations from gambling. Instead, gambling especially when someone is addicted to gambling has brought forth hazardous impacts on people physical or mental health.
Task C
In order to finish this task, I would like employ the Option A of Approach 2 to address the problem that the protagonist in the video, Jake is in face of. Through watching the video on the YouTube, it is obviously acknowledged that Jake is rooted in the gambling addiction problem so that he is intended to find out an effective way to eradicate such addiction. After learning lectures about social cognitive theory, I am willing to apply the knowledge I have acquired to help him to deal with his issue.
In this video, Jake has already known that gambling is harmful to him and he has to alleviate his addiction to gambling, with exerting negative impacts on his mental and physical health. First and foremost, self-schemas are conducive for Jake to get rid of gambling addiction. Self-schemas mean that individual has an overall understanding about himself. However, we usually possess different self-schemas adaptable to different situations. There are two motives comprised in self-schemas- one is self-enhancement motives and another is self-verification motives. Self-enhancement motives refer to individuals’ preference for positive feedback and selective social comparison, while self-verification means individuals will be persistent in the behavior even though such action is of a negative belief. In light of this circumstance, we are required to stimulate the self-enhancement motives of Jake. Since Jake is aware of the hazardous impacts of gambling addiction, he is determined to give up this bad habit. Therefore, we should give him some positive encouragement, illustrating the positive influence of giving up gambling. Furthermore, we should forge the goal of uprooting gambling addiction in his minds. We have already realized that goals have impacts on individuals’ behavior; consequently, it is of significance for Jake to set up his minds to reach the goal of getting rid of gambling addictions. In addition, evaluative standards should be paid attention. Jake is supposed to understand that gambling is an illegal and immoral behavior, which should not be permitted. Once he realizes the immorality of gambling, his moral minds will not allow him to do it again. Furthermore, observational learning will help Jake to address gambling addiction problem. Since social cognitive theory places emphasis on behaviorism, reinforcement thus is critical to alterations of behaviors. In addition, social cognitive theory states that individuals acquire behaviors through observe other behaving. In this case, we should create a clean environment for Jake. That is to say, we are allowed to give some positive examples that some gamblers succeed in getting rid of such terrible addiction. Through observing others how to change their addicted behaviors, Jake is likely to acquire the ways to address addiction problem.
Task D
This report has merely studied the gambling addiction issue from the perspective of social cognitive theory; thus, the report is limited by theory application. In light of only one theoretical application to case study, the conclusion the report has drawn seems less telling. In addition, this report has only focused on one case- Jake’s addiction to the gambling; as a result, the research quantitative method has been limited. Through the merely one case study, it is hard to prove the merits or demerits of the social cognitive theory.
