When I was still a little kid, my life was simple and happy. At school, my parents took good care of me, they taught me tobe a fair-minded man, they took good care of me when I was sick, and they encouraged me when I had made a bad performancein my examination. And at school, the teachers taught us with wonderful knowledge patiently, while my classmates showed metheir kindness. When I went to the amusement park, I heard people’s screaming and laughing; when I went to our friends’parties, I heard people’s talking and laughing; when I went to buy new toys, I saw people’s smiling faces: it seemed to me that everyone in the world were living a happy life.

However, with the passage of time, I gradually grew up, and learnt more about the world. Then I began to realize that the world was not always a paradise. I knew there were beggars, I knew there were thieves, and I knew there were violence crimes. But I still believed that they were only small part of the world. In general we still lived in a happy world.Later when I recalled my idea at that time, I believed it was mainly because those disasters and misfortunes were so far away from me and I did not have a chance to experience them. So, when the Wenchuan Earthquake happened on May 12th 2008,my mind changed.

Although not in the seismic area at that time, I still strongly felt the earthquake which was almost legendary to me before. Till now, I could still recollect what happened that afternoon. When we just began our physics lessons for a little while, which was about nearly half past two in the afternoon, suddenly I felt a little dizzy. At first, I thought I was still a little sleepy. Then we saw the light tubes swaying back and forth. Someone gave us the quickest response, he yelled “earthquake” and began to run to the outside. Then the rest of us began to follow. In a few minutes, almost the whole school had run to the playground. Everyone was talking about it with extreme excitement and fear. Later, we heard that it was Wenchuan, Sichuan province that had been stricken by the earthquake of 8.0 epicentral Richter magnitudes, and several thousand people had died in it. It was one of the most destructive earthquakes since the founding of new China, with the widest impacting scope and the biggest total number of casualties. To me, most importantly, it was the first disaster that I had ever experienced myself. For the first time, I soberly realized that life would not always be happy and fortunate for everyone, and the world was not always in peace. There were so many disasters and misfortunes that we just could do little when we encountered them, and life was just so fragile sometimes. And in the following years, a serial of events had reinforced my idea.

On September 2nd 2009, a big earthquake of 7.3 epicentral Richter magnitudes hit Java Island of Indonesia. And a lot of aftershock had followed. Nearly a thousand died, and about 64 thousand buildings were destroyed. And in the same month, another earthquake of 7.6 epicentral Richter magnitudes struck Sumatra of Indonesia again. Over thousand people died and over 10 thousand buildings were wrecked. When I heard the news from the television, I was shocked again. We were not living in the same country, but we were living in the same world. And the world was not so peaceful. There were so many geological disasters, such as earthquakes, debris flow, tsunami, and so on. In front of them, we human beings were so small. And the recent following years seemed to be calamitous years, witnessing a serial of disasters. In January 2010, a quake of 7.3 epicentral Richter magnitudes rocked the Caribbean island nation, Haiti, leading to a death toll of about 0.3 million, and leaving around one million people homeless. In February of the same year, a much bigger quake of 8.8 epicentral Richter magnitudes hit Chile, and its aftershock had arouse the tsunami, affecting even more countries including Australia. This high Richter magnitude earthquake had caused global panic.( Pelling, 2003) In March 2010, a severe drought had stricken the five provinces in southwest of China, directly affecting 61.3 million people’s lives, leaving about 18 million people lack of adequate drinking water, and about 11.7 million domestic animals difficult in getting water. It also impacted about 5 million hectares of crops, with 1.11 million hectares of crops demolished, leading to a direct economic loss of 23.6 billion yuan.( Neumayer & Barthel, 2011) And in April, Eyjafjallajokull volcano, located in the south of Iceland, erupted, and triggered floods, forcing about 800 residents nearby to evacuate in emergency.

During the period, the European shipping business had to cease, leading to a direct economic loss of 1.7 billion dollars.( Neumayer & Barthel, 2011) However, these natural disasters are only part of the dangerous world. There are more misfortunes that make the world far from lovable. The contamination event of Chinese dairy products in 2008 had successfully turned people’s attention to the problem of food safety. It started from the infants diagnosed with kidney stones who had drunk the Sanlu milk powder. Then the milk powder was tested as contained melamine, a kind of poisonous industrial chemicals. This event not only damaged the image of China’s dairy products, but also shifted people’s focus to food safety problems. For quite a long time following, the government, media and the mass had attached great importance to the food safety problem, and as a result, a great number of food safety cases were disclosed, which had shocked the public. In the spring of 2011, Shuanghui Group,China's leading meat producer, apologized to the public, because some of its pork products had been found to be contaminated with clenbuterol. It is a kind of banned drug that helps pigs to reduce fat, so that it would be much easier for the farmers to cultivate pigs with high lean meat percentage, which were much more popular in the market. (Trienekens& Zuurbier, 2008) But this drug was quite dangerous for people’s health. There are more cases. The “illegal cooking oil”, which usually made from the kitchen waste, had been used in various restaurants. To make the duck eggs more beautiful, they added Sudan Red, a banned drug that could cause cancer. They also sold dyed steamed bun which was also poisonous. Then, it seems quite difficult for us to think out one kind of food that is absolutely safe. There are brightener andstains in steamed buns, clenbuterol and formalin in meat, Sudan Red in eggs, and melamine in milk powder, and so on.Sometimes I cannot even imagine I am still living healthily. Certainly, related to these poisonous food or not, there are indeed more new-typed diseases. Ten years ago, SARS and the “mad cow” disease have put the whole world into danger and terror, while recent years, the avian flu and H7N9 have once again took away many people’s lives. To make things worse, besides the natural disasters and diseases, there are more direct ways threating people’s lives.Terrorism is one of the most destructive. About twelve years ago, the “9-11” event had left a deep wound for Americanpeople. (Yoo, 2008) And it had shocked the whole world. But to me, it seems the recent explosion case in Boston impressed me deeper, for it was so near to me. Till now I could still hardly believe that such a terrible case just happened around me. On April 15th, about ten to three in the afternoon, two bombs exploded around the finishing line of Marathon. 3 people died, including one Chinese people, and over 170 wounded. I did not know what exactly happened until later. It scared me at first. I felt so sorry for my compatriots died in this case. It made me think a lot, about life, about the society and the world.

Why the world has become more and more dangerous? I think we should really reflect on ourselves, on our daily behaviors. These natural disasters are not always natural.Should not we notice that there are more and more natural disasters in recent years? Why? When we cut down the trees, when we construct more buildings on the farmlands, when we pour in a great quantity of waste into the river water, when we produce more exhaust gases into the air, we should be able to imagine the possible result, the desertification, the global warming, the lack of energy, the species extinction, etc. Also, when, in order to make more money, we add brightener and stains into steamed buns, clenbuterol and formalin into meat, Sudan Red into eggs, and melamine into milk powder, should we first think about our families, what if they have ate them? It is said that the world are becoming more and more indifferent. People are all only care about themselves, and the nations are only care about their own benefits. There are more and more crimes and more terrorism cases. It’s time for us to think about life, to think about future, to think about the world. From now on, please try to do every tiny thing for the efforts to make a better world. If we, everyone could make his own big or small contribution to the world, instead of damaging the world, then we can confidently looking forward to a better and brighter future of the world!
