Character Analysis of Rose and Seymour
For this paper, I would like to choose Rose in “Silver Water” and Seymour in “A Perfect Day for Bananafish”. I think Rose suffered Schizophrenia and Seymour suffered Post-traumatic stress disorder.
Rose had the most beautiful voice which is like mountain water in a silver pitcher but experienced her first psychotic break when she was fifteen. She became tearful and moody and didn’t communicate with her family. She acted crazily such as having sex with random guys and “banging her head with rhythmic intensity, against the kitchen door, throwing all of her weight behind each attack (Bloom 164)”. Schizophrenia’s symptoms include positive ones of hallucinations and delusions as well as negative ones of flat affect and an inability to plan or engage in goal-directed behavior. I think Rose’s symptom is mainly auditory hallucination. She always heard voices. When she had sex with people, “She was in a fever for a while, trying to still the voices by fucking her brains out (Bloom 161)”. Based on King, The way to treat schizophrenia is taking medicine. “For many people with the disorder, controlling it means using powerful medications to combat symptoms. The most common cause of relapse is that individuals stop taking their medication (Page 571)”. When the patients feel better, they often stop taking medication and couldn’t realize their disorder. Under treatment, Rose became much better who could attend choir practice regularly but she stopped medication after her favorite therapist died, which deteriorated her illness and caused her suicide eventually. Suicide is often the end which patients with schizophrenia chose because the suicide risk for them is eight times that for general population, which is also stated in King.
I think the factor for Rose’s illness has much to do with heredity. Both of her parents are considered weird, especially her mother. When Rose committed suicide, her mother considered her daughter a “warrior queen” and then went into woods, which shows that her mother takes the suicide a relief for her daughter.
In “A Perfect Day for Bananafish”, Seymour is a war veteran, who obviously suffered Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). He had the disease because of his exposure to the cruelty of the war and his inability to adapt to the current world after coming back from the front. His symptoms are mainly “Excessive arousal, resulting in an exaggerated startle response (King Page 558)”and “Difficulties with memory and concentration (King Page 559)”. Seymour was startled when Sybil asked if he would be going in the water. “The young man started, his right hand going to the lapels of his terry-cloth robe (Salinger 11)”. Sybil asked him more than once is he would go in the water, Seymour didn’t answer her and he just kept asking irrelevant questions. He has severe problem of concentration. For two times, he couldn’t follow Sybil even if she was asking about what he just told Sybil. Sometimes, he had to ask her twice about what Sybil said. “Do you like wax?” Sybil asked. --“Do I like what?”asked the young man.-- “Wax.” {Salinger 14}. Seymour suffered much stress living in the world, so he finally ended his life with a pistol, like the tragic ending of the bananafish, who died from eating banana.
It’s no doubt Seymour’s disorder came from the post-war trauma. But there were maybe other factors such as the unhappy marriage. Her wife, Muriel was a total different type. She was very into appearance which shown by her care with her nail while he was a spiritual type because he loved reading and sent his wife a German poem as a gift. So he committed suicide after he went back to the hotel and glanced at his sleeping wife.
