What’s Jesus Like

Jesus was regarded as a teacher according to the author's study on Jesus. He was not the kind of teacher at school that teaches you a specific subject matter. Instead, he was a teacher of wisdom. By telling you short stories and thought-provoking sayings, he taught you the way you view the world and you live, in order to make you forward to a better life. In this physical world made up of atoms and subatomic particles in constant motion, Jesus brought us faith and personal meaning, rescue us from an indifferent universe.

Jesus was a teacher that characterized by forgiveness. In the paragraph The Prodigal Son gives us three scenes to picture a prodigal and his "back". First he went to a journey to distance area and then spent everything there, after experiencing being in poverty and being hired for feeding pigs, he finally came home. And his compassionate and tolerant father welcomes his back to the family by killing a fatted calf and celebrating it. But on the contrary, the prodigal's brother feels unfair for the celebration party for welcoming the black sheep. I think the brother's reaction is understandable if he and his little brother are strangers. But being family, we should feel happy at the first feeling instead of feeling unfair for his father's warm welcome. Blood is thicker than water. He ignores the natural close tie between he and his brother and the parental compassion his father has for his brother. The property is the last thing they should think about. But I think he will join the celebration after chilling out. People tend to be more rational after thinking. Beyond the parental compassion, I think Jesus showed us the importance and greatness of forgiveness. We should forget those who have made a mistake but be aware of his own mistake and are willing to make a change. A prodigal who returns is more precious than gold. To err is human. We should accept other's mistake as the father did. Also, it is important to forgive our mistakes. Only after we let go of our past mistakes and misery, we can look into the future. Indulge in the past does no good to anyone.

Jesus is a teacher who teaches you not to be worried and anxious about your life, not worried about what to eat, what to drink, what to wear because God is generous to anybody and anything in the world. He take the birds for example, they do not get their food out of their sowing in spring and reaping in autumn but God still feeds them for he is life-giving, generous and lavish. Moreover, worrying did not bring you anything. Can worry add a single hour to our life? Can worry feed you a piece of bread? Can worry make you warm in winter? Absolutely not. God knows what we need and what we should do is strive first and all those things will come to you. Supposed that you spend time in worrying, how could you have time to work hard in order to get what you want? Jesus use the nature to show us a lesson, do what you should do, and get what you should get.

Jesus was a judger persisting in justice. Justice is the social form of love and political form of compassion and is Jesus’ desire and passion for this world, which is also related to Jesus’ character. Justice is about politics, about the shape and shaping, structure and structuring. Why Jesus emphasize on this? I think maybe it’s because social justice develop and realize on the basis of political justice. We all know that politics decide everything. As long as you have political status, you can ensure your social status. Those who cannot say a word about politics, they don’t have the right and chance to speak out their will. And think further, to ensure political justice, we have to ensure the political democracy, ensure the participation right in the politics. We mustn’t rule out any single person in democracy in order to get the justice that Jesus desire.

This book tells us what Jesus was like, and what’s his passion. How we see Jesus reflect how we see the reality, and how we see the reality affects how we response to our real life. This book helps us to know further Jesus and to know in which way we can live better.
