My Views on Smart Devices

Recently, I have been gaining increasing awareness on my strong attachment to my smartphone. Whenever I go anywhere without it, or its battery is dying, I immediately feel insecure and need to take instant action to ensure its functionality. Sometimes I would wonder how I ever lived the past few years without a smartphone, how I killed time on my daily commute, or how I stayed connected with all my fiends. I suppose that the invention of smartphone has made people’s lives much easier, nonetheless, I do realize that we have made significant sacrifices in terms of our lifestyles to accommodate the usage of smartphones, and any other smart devices for that matter. 
    On the plus side, smartphones keep people connected, not only with each other, but also with the rest of the world in the same time. We no longer have the need to purchase printed newspapers or magazines, for the contents are only one application away. We are literally living in the age that almost every piece of information is available at our fingertips, and I trust that no one could deny smartphones have enabled such way of living. With the advancement of globalization, people are far more mobile than they used to be. And smart devices are especially effective in helping us stay in touch with our friends who have gone overseas. 
    However, when I try to take a step back to examine and compare how different my ways of living are prior and after the possession of a smartphone, I realized that I sorely miss the warmth of having a heartfelt conversation with my family and friends, which is in no way replaceable by texts or video chats. Even at home, every family member spends significantly more amount of time staring at the small screens, time of which should have been spent talking to each other, exchanging daily anecdotes. I personally have gotten so used to clicking “like” for another person’s post to show that I care, that I can hardly deliver a sincere compliment to my friend face to face. In establishing long-distance connections, smartphone has unexpectedly taken away my ability in genuine communication. 
    In many ways, smartphones are designed to extend, expand and enrich our lives. It is sad to acknowledge that some of us have been enslaved by these devices. I sincerely hope that someday people will be making conscious effort to negate these adverse consequences that smart devices have brought us. It is only then we are able to use them to their full advantage.
