First of all, I agree with what the film argues about the representation of race in Disney films. I have also watched numerous Disney films and am still a big fan of them. Fa Mulan (In Chinese Mandarin, Hua Mulan) is a name known to every Chinese household and her heroic story of joining the army for her father has been handed down from generation to generation. It is indeed that the story says Mulan retires to be obscure as a housewife which is the role that Chinese women should play in old China. However, the movie exaggerates the supreme importance of marriage in a woman’s life by dwelling too much on how Mulan is gossiped by the neighbors. By expanding on the detailed life after Mulan’s back from the battlefield, China impresses the public as a patriarchal society where women were abusively suppressed by men. I won’t deny that China was indeed a male-dominant country where women were treated unequally in many ways. But today’s China is just the same as any other developed countries except in some rural areas. Many statistics show that the number of females with Master’s degree or Doctoral degree is larger than that of males. 

I partly agree the argument of the gender representation in the films. For instance, the movies have settled the stereotyped beauties with a thin waist and big breasts. Nevertheless, I don’t quite agree what the film says about “Beauty and the Beast”. Belle is said to be submissive to the rage and the violence of the beast and finally falls love in with the beast. In addition, what the beast does to Belle is very abusive and violent. So it’s a way to tame women. But for my part, I think it’s very romantic to fall in love with someone who you hate very much in the first place. Rage doesn’t necessarily mean violence or abuse. Women can also be very abusive and violent as shown in the South Korean movie “My Sassy Girl”.
