A Rose for Emily——Development of Character in Writing

 这是一篇关于书籍《A Rose for Emily》在写作方面的作品赏析和评价的文学essay
Literature should be a driver which can give readers some strike and inspiration, leading them to establishing their own points of view. A good piece of literature should consist of substantial elements such as good theme, reasonable structure, rich characterization and intriguing plot. Among these elements, development of character cannot be neglected given that it directly lays the foundation for the story. Therefore, ways of developing character plays a significant role in deciding the quality of the writing. Combined with the work, A Rose for Emily written by William Faulkner, I would like demonstrates the importance of giving details and making changes when developing character and leading to a good piece of literature.
In the literature I chose, Emily was born in a noble family and her father owned a high status in local town. Both of them caught the attention of the local residents. Emily has been trained as a grace, noble while arrogant lady by her father since she was young. After her father’s death, though she kept her nobility and arrogance, she fell in love with a rude and vulgar Yankee, Homer Barron, despite the gossip of the local people. However, Homer Barron was a gay and did not mean to marry Emily sincerely. After their marriage, both Homer Barron and Emily disappeared, except the period when Emily was about forty and taught children china-painting. When Emily passed away, villagers broke into her room and found the corpse of Homer Barron, who has been poisoned to death by Emily for decades. From the introduction above, it can be seen that Emily is a tragic character with strong personality which shocks numerous readers. It drives us to explore how such a character can be better developed to make this story a good piece of literature.
When developing character, offering details to readers is more effective than just directly clarifying character’s traits. As the University Writing Center says, “character development is more effective when the author reveals traits about the character” through the details such as surrounding, events or background. Offer details that “allows the readers to form judgments” about the character, rather than “simply accepting the author’s word for it”. Directly pointing out the character’s traits is limiting reader’s judgment and imposing author’s view on readers, even though indeed people have assorted points of views on the same event. If not given the character’s traits directly, most of the readers are so intelligent that they can actively judge the character by themselves and form their own views, that is where the meaning of literature lies. In A Rose for Emily, William Faulkner never directly states Emily’s character, instead of which, he chooses to present some details. For example, when Emily was required to pay taxes by officials who were to negotiate with her, “she did not ask them to sit. She just stood in the door and listened quietly until the spokesman came to a stumbling halt”(Faulkner 1931). Moreover, “each December we sent her a tax notice, which would be returned by the post office a week later, unclaimed”(Faulkner 1931). In this segment, not even a word is directly related to state her character; instead, they are all about details while they leave a strong impression on readers. Through her impolite attitudes and behavior of returning tax notice, readers can establish an image of Emily from their own perspectives. Such method of developing character will also be more convincing.
Another way to craft a successful character is to make conflicts or changes. Conflicts and changes are strong ways to highlight the inner world of the character. If things are just happening normally in response to the seeming traits of the character, the story will not be interesting because readers could have already predicted the endings. As Brian Klems says, “in fiction terms, a character’s transformation is called his inner journey or character arc” and “there’s also room for characters who change for the worse. Indeed, though they may lead to depressing, poor-selling books if given the lead role, these tragic characters are fascinating to watch”. It transformation is necessary if the author desires to further lead readers to exploring the character’s inner world. Changes not only causes reader’s emotional response but also guide them to further analyze the character. In A Rose for Emily, changes also occur to shock readers. Emily, as a women born in a noble family, fell in love with a northern laborer and still dared to publicly open her relation with Homer Barron. As we see in the novel, “Presently we began to see him and Miss Emily on Sunday afternoons driving in the yellow-wheeled buggy and the matched team of bays from the livery stable”(Faulkner 1931). It was hard for local people to accept that a noble lady marries a rude man. The novel described that, “later we said, ‘Poor Emily’ behind the jalousies as they passed on Sunday afternoon in the glittering buggy, Miss Emily with her head high and Homer Barron with his hat cocked and a cigar in his teeth, reins and whip in a yellow glove” and even “Then some of the ladies began to say that it was a disgrace to the town and a bad example to the young people”(Faulkner 1931). Such kind of unexpected change has given readers shock and made them ponder over the reasons. Another change at the end of the story is about the death of Emily’s husband. “Miss Emily just stared at him, her head tilted back in order to look him eye for eye, until he looked away and went and got the arsenic and wrapped it up”(Faulkner 1931). It is difficult to imagine that noble woman like Emily would kill her own husband. But once we further explore, it also has reasons. For a lady like Emily, who has her own pride, it is impossible for her to admit being abandoned by a man she loved. Therefore, in order to keep her beloved man forever as well as her dignity, she finally chose to poisoned Homer Barron to death.
From the analysis above, it is clear that giving details and making changes are two effective ways of developing a character and make the writing a good piece of literature. Giving details can give readers opportunities to independently form views on the characters, which can be more convincing and meaningful, while changes can make the image of the character clearer as well as helping to craft a more intriguing and unexpected story. Only when the character which is the underpinning of a story is successfully developed, can a literature be an excellent one.

of people. Only in this way can we human beings grasp the accurate and proper ways for better communicate in our daily life to get rid of the unneeded misunderstanding due to the inappropriate application of certain terms. The same case goes as well to the wide usage of depicting one of our facial expressions, laughing. In the following I’d like to classify the different forms of an aspect of human behavior, laughing, with some concrete kinds of laughing listed as examples.
First and foremost comes “grin”, one common form of laughing that is to laugh with his or her teeth bared, opposite to the gentle smile usually happened when tight lipped on those females in a really polite manners in that in the ancient times it is one of the evaluation criteria to judge whether the specific female is virtuous enough to be a competent wife under the influence of the so-called “the three obediences and the four virtues”, being generally acknowledged and approved for a relatively long period of time. While on the other hand, nowadays grin is also an advocated way of laughing in that it can make people laugh unconstrained in whatever way and just be themselves when laughing, to a certain degree freeing themselves from the countless troubles that are inevitable in the daily life and relaxing themselves more or less to strike a proper balance between work and rest so that they can again gain the needed energies and efforts back for the coming trivial affairs in work or life. Or we can simply put it another way that this kind of laughing has really realized the purpose of laughing as people laugh because they are happy.
With the type of laughing “grin” being in detail mentioned above, what comes next to the list of forms of laughing lies in “guffaw”, which is to split one’s sides with laugher together with both hands or either hand holding at the belly. “Guffaw” is frequently employed to expound a person when he laughs to such an extreme that he can’t help but choose to hold his or her belly in order that this action can prevent them from serious stomachache resulted from the over exciting laugh for a long time. From the above, we can easily draw a conclusion that this kind of laughing will always be and might only be adopted when dealing with some circumstances that are funny and humorous to a degree that can hardly be stated within words but choose a replacement “guffaw” instead for depicting very little part of it shamefully. Moreover, we can have a fair knowledge that this action of laughing tends to take place on those extroverts as they dare to express their true thoughts deep down their own heart out directly taking no regard of other misgivings that may be possessed by some introverts, leading to their being unable to display the most authentic self in a way or another. As far as I’m concerned, there is no doubt that I am personally in favor of this form of laughing in that I feel like the feeling of just being myself, saying having it that “go on your own course and let others talk”.
Last but not the least, what I want to in detail introduce is another type of laughing, “giggle”, as is to laugh with a lovely sound pronounced by all the babies when they are being entertained by their parents, relatives or other things around. As those babies are so young that they have not the possibility of expressing their happiness out through words or actions as the adults, thus under such a condition they will choose to laugh by making certain sounds that are a clear voice and their sole voice as well. “Giggle” is so sweet and pleasant to the hearers so that even some girls learn to imitate such a sound in order that they can be more charming for their ideal boys with whom they have crushes on.

“Grin”, “Guffaw” and also “giggle” being discussed above, there is my intention that these three forms of laughing are all begins with letter “g” in spelling and it is really possible for human beings to misunderstand them this time or next time in the common exchanges in daily life. At the final of this discussion, I want to express my heartfelt gratitude and sincere hope that all people can grasp the accurate and proper ways for better communicate in our daily life to get rid of the unneeded misunderstanding in the near future.
