实例分析英文论文写作中的简洁性

Write concisely so that your writing is vigorous.

上面这句话表达得不够简洁，原作者是这样说的：Vigorous writing is concise.

一句话里不要有多余的词，一段话里不要有多余的句子，

A sentence should contain no unnecessary words, a paragraph no unnecessary sentences, (第二个动词都省了，够简洁！)

就像一幅画里不能有多余的线条，一台机器不能有多余的零件。

for the same reason that a drawing should have no unnecessary lines and a machine no unnecessary parts. (第二个动词都省了，够简洁！)

这倒不是说作者要把句子写得很短，或者只写大概内容，不描述细节，而是说每个单词都要有用。（就像一个单位，不能养吃闲饭的！）

This requires not that the writer make all sentences short, or avoid all detail and treat subjects only in outline, but that every word tell.

也许有人要问，make、avoid、treat和tell后面怎么不加s，主语不是单数第三人称writer吗？

如果提出了这个问题说明语法学得不错，但是。。。没学到家。这里实际上是requires sb (should) do 的形式，这个should可以省略，类似的动词有：suggest, order, require, propose, demand, request, insist。

很多常见的表达都违反了这个原则：

the question as to whether 可以精简为whether (the question whether)

there is no doubt but that 可以精简为no doubt (doubtless)

used for fuel purposes 可以精简为used for fuel

this is a subject that 可以精简为this subject

Her story is a strange one. 可以精简为Her story is strange.

the reason why is that 可以精简为because

call your attention to the fact that 可以精简为remind you (notify you)

I was unaware of the fact that 可以精简为I was unaware that (did not know)

the fact that he had not succeeded 可以精简为his failure

the fact that I had arrived 可以精简为my arrival

Case, character, nature, who is, which was等表达也常常是多余的：

In many cases, the rooms lacked air conditioning. 可以精简为Many of the rooms lacked air conditioning.

It has rarely been the case that any mistake has been made. 可以精简为Few mistakes have been made.

acts of a hostile character 可以精简为hostile acts

acts of a hostile nature可以精简为hostile acts

His cousin, who is a member of the same firm 可以精简为His cousin, a member of the same firm

Trafalgar, which was Nelson's last battle 可以精简为Trafalgar, Nelson's last battle

主动语态比被动语态更简洁，肯定句式比否定句式更简洁。

The active voice is more concise than the passive, and a positive statement more concise than a negative one.

逐句堆砌来表达一个复杂的意思也常常会显得啰嗦，这时可以考虑进行句子合并。

A common way to fall into wordiness is to present a single complex idea, step by step, in a series of sentences that might to advantage be combined into one.

比如：

Macbeth was very ambitious. This led him to wish to become king of Scotland. The witches told him that this wish of his would come true. The king of Scotland at this time was Duncan. Encouraged by his wife, Macbeth murdered Duncan. He was thus enabled to succeed Duncan as king. (51 words)

可以精简为

Encouraged by his wife, Macbeth achieved his ambition and realized the prediction of the witches by murdering Duncan and becoming king of Scotland in his place. (26 words)
