To Learn From the Film or the Book

We must recognize that we can learn a lot through multiple avenues, such as going to the movies, reading a book and attending a lecture. What can the student more reality learn from the film or to the book?  We all know that the English film is visually attractive and culture-loaded. This makes it an irreplaceable instrument in learning. But many students would rather learn from the book than the film, because many of them think the book can be well preserved or portabled. And it is a good chance for students to get mind growth. Overall, students prefer to learn from the book rather than the film.

Firstly, with the rapid development of university library facilities, students can get enough knowledge from the book, they can easily get the book which they want to read from the library. Students are allowed to carry the book with them through due process, so they can start to learn from the book almost everywhere and every time. Secondly, compared with the pay-per-view movies, the book is cheaper than the film and has the higher cost performance. For casual students, it is cost-effective if they buy or borrow books from the library instead of paying for the film. Finally, the book washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life. Overall, most films were adaptations, just a few films were originals. As many directors say, they have to cut down a long-page book to a two-and-a-half-hour film, so they inevitably have to lose something. Because of this, the book can protect the integrity of the history to the greatest extent, students may get the detail information about the whole history.

Across the board, the film and the book tells a same story, The AMISTAD film explores that a group of blacks, most were kidnapped from Africa and sold in to slavery. They had seized control of the ship in the revolt. Unfortunately, they were captured by the United States Navy and were faced with the mufer charge. With the help of two abolitionists and a lawyer, they overcame any difficulties and get the freedom in the judicial way. (Howard Jones, 8) John Quincy Adams is the son of the John Adams, one of the Founding Fathers. What he said in court is the climax of the whole film. The emotion of the audience was heightened by the climax of the film. He advocated to build a model democratic state with unity, peace, freedom and justice for all and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal. (Howard Jones, 47) We can see that The AMISTAD film is an epic film. It is rich in content and the plot to ups and downs. The film contains not only the humanitarian spirit and altruism of abolitionist and grand abolition movement, but also the crime of the slaving entrepreneurs and the complicated political struggle between Spain and America. It also involves the American Civil War. The most attractive part in the film is “The crisis of slaves”. The film has shown us that when it comes the crisis of slaves, the power of the Constitutionalism is huge beyond imagination. It reflected the supreme authority of justice. Compared with the AMISTAD film, the book “Mutiny on the Amistad” details published to coincide with Steven Spielberg's forthcoming movie "Amistad". It’s content is based on the true history. The plot in the book is similar to the film in that period. It is clear that both the film and the book tells a same story. The African blacks seized by slave dealers, and after the legal confusion, the blacks won their freedom in the judicial way and they returned their home at last. (Howard Jones, p3)The content in the book is rich and concluded more detail description of the whole story. We can get a lot of things from the book. Certainly, the law is not omnipotent to deal with the public crises, especially the political crises, but its function is irreplaceable. (Howard Jones, 155)When the Supreme Court judged that the slaves won the freedom, the conservatives attempt to protect their profits by force. (Howard Jones, 170)

It is known to us all the film version of the historical event cannot contain the same amount of detail as the book version, so there are many different things between these two mediums. The film is mainly based on the real history and the book Black Mutiny, but the plots in the film has adapted a lot , and it has been cut down to a certain degree. And the whole film focus on the fighting in the courts rather than emerge the integrated slave movement. Compared with the film, the book is more fit in with the true history, because it has shown the true things without much change and adaptation, it contains almost all of the detail about the history of that period.  (Howard Jones, 3) We cannot say the film is unsuccessful just for this reason, because it is the truth that you’re cutting down the long period of the history to a two-and-a-half-hour film, so you have to give up a lot of details and focus on the one or two shining points. The detail omitted from the film does not break the real history. On the contrary, it emerged the flash point of the history in a great way. All in all, the history depicted in the book is comprehensive. And the history depicted in the film has its own emphasis and shining points.

As for academic study, the film is more proper for students. Recently, the survey shows that the film is beneficial for academic study. The reasons are as following. On the one hand, with the development of the modern media, more and more students tend to watch a movie by using electronic products, such as mobile phone, the iPad, the personal computer and so on. They can watch a movie without the limitation of time and place. If they want to learn more thing from the film, they can take some notes or write down the film review when they are watching a movie. Learning from the film becomes a convenience for academic study. They can easily learn a lot from the film in a short time. It will give the students a new experience for the history and it is a great opportunity to widen one’s horizon. On the other hand, watching a movie is a relaxing thing. It is a fashion for students to learn from the film. Many students think that reading a book is a boring and difficult thing. They have to waste much time in it. They usually cannot sit down to read the book patiently. But they can watch a movie without anxiety as learning something useful from it at the same time. This may seems like a no-brainer thing for everyone. It is not a hard thing for students to do it. They can briefly know about the whole history in a short time without reading a long-page book for a long time. They can use their time to do other things. In addition, the film can stimulate people’s vision sense and auditory sense at the same time. Take the nation that students have specific learning styles, that some are “visual learners” and others are auditory; some are “left-brain” students, others “right-brain.” To learn from the film will do good to the “right-brain.” learners as well as the “left-brain” learners at the same time. Compared with the film, the book may only be beneficial for the “visual learners”, it cannot stimulate people’s auditory sense at the same time. For these reasons, the film is more suited to academic study than the book.

Both the film and the book are telling the same history, but they do not use the same sources. The book’s sources are almost from the real history, with a little changes and adaptations.  (HOWARD JONES, p221) But the sources of the film is more complicated. The sources of the film come from different ways, such as the book Black Mutiny, the ten-year study about the American Civil War and the movie Schindler's List. Photographs, storyboard illustrations, and historical documents are also the sources of the film. We can see that before the director start the film, he must know about this history clearly, he may read a lot of books about the history and get some documents about it. What’s more, he had done a research for the history in that period for ten years old. It is not an easy thing to make preparations for the film. So the sources of the film are multitudinous.

But the instance in history is the main source for the film and the book. So the source of the film and the book is documentary. For example, the whole film is based on the real history, the story in the film comply with the true history. It vividly reappeared the history in that period in a great light. The story of the racial discrimination and the pursuit of the freedom. Just as the movie AMISTAD, the movie Black Mutiny, another movies which directed by the same director, also derived from the real history. We can see that appropriate adaptation does not change the effect of history. It may give the audience a new vision about the history. There are a few shining point in the film. All of these make the film become admirable.      

When it comes to teaching history in university, most teachers tend to use the film to spread the knowledge about the history, because with the development of the electronic media, there is more and more electronic equipment in the university, so more teachers tend to use the film in their classes. Teaching English with video is advantageous. Teaching with the film, teacher will show much information in the limit short time. Teachers can let students write down a film review after watching it or finish other relevant task. Students may learn a lot from in this way. All of these make the film be more superior to the book when it comes to teaching history in university.

In my point of view, I also prefer to use the film to learn rather than the books. In modern society, To learn from the film is a new tendency and a new fashion, we should try to use new things and learn a lot from it. What’s more, there are many good movies which are based on the real history. We may know about the whole history from this way. The AMISTAD film does not distort the history. I believe the film is allowed to adapt but it must comply with the moral standards and the good and evil criterion. It is to be a wonderful choose for students or others to learn some things from the film.

In conclusion, to learn from the film or the book is not a difficult problem, as the young, it is essential to comply with the trend of the time. The film represent the new things in the society, the book stand for the old things. We should learn from the film, at the same time, we might discard the dross and select the essence as well. What’s more, you have to figure out for yourself that if you are more of a visual learner, an auditory learner or a tactile learner. If you are an auditory learner, you’d better learn from the film rather than the book. You should cultivate the habit of taking notes while watching the movie. Only in this way, can we really learn from it and make the best use of it.
