To Be or Not to Be

To Be or Not to Be, released in 1942, is a typical American comedy. Directed by Ernst Lubitsch, it tells a story that happens in Poland during the World War Ⅱ. A group of stage performers fight against the Nazi party with their wits and courage, for the sake of preventing a spy from sending the important information about Poland to Germany as well as protecting the underground resistance group of Warsaw. In occupied Poland, the troupe of stage actors, which are led by Joseph Tura and his wife Maria, make good use of their ability of disguising and acting to fool the occupied German troops and stop the delivery of the damaging information, and escape from the enemy safely in the end. To be frank, like many other people, I do not feel angry while watching this movie though it is regarded as a film filled with both anger and laugh because it is a anti-Nazi story. In fact, it is really funny and exciting. More surprisingly, the movie director, Ernst Lubitsch, turns out to be a German and he makes this movie right during the war, which means he somehow resists his motherland and what he has done may bring him into trouble. So great as he is, he has been nominated three times for Best Director, and his films have also promoted as having "the Lubitsch touch". A great person makes a great film. The title of this film is a reference to the famous "To be, or not to be" soliloquy in William Shakespeare's play---Hamlet. To be or not to be, this is a question. For Lubitsch, for the characters in this film, and for every one in the world, we inevitably meet with such condition where we have to decide to live with our strength. Likewise, the title---to be or not to be, of this film dose not simply mean to live or die, it also means more spiritually whether to do things with a brave mind or not. Therefore, to be or not to be, this is a question which can be answered with our passion and wits.

In the beginning of the movie, it is in a street of Poland before the 1939 invasion of Nazi Germany. we can see a scene in which people are shocked by the appearance of a man---Hitler, who turns out to be not real when a young girl asks for the autograph of "Mr. Bronski". At that time, the most famous stars of a theater company in Warsaw are a couple---Josef Tura and his beautiful wife, Maria. When practicing a part of the play Gestapo which makes a mock of the Nazis, one of the actors, Bronski, walks to the street to prove that he looks like Hitler in his costume and makeup. We can see how people react to Hitler, or the Nazis. Certainly, they are feared when Hitler appear for his being the one who may do harm to their family and homeland. But even in such a politically sensitive period, the actors in that theater still give performance satirizing the Nazis, though later they are forced to stop and change to play Hamlet. I think their love for motherland would not change and that may be the driving force for them to fight against the Nazis. Through this scene, we can feel the Polish people’s attitude towards the Nazis and their passion for Poland. Maybe during that period, making such performances is a kind of means to protect their country, especially by satirizing the enemy. In this way, more people know about the Nazis and just like the saying knowing oneself and one's enemy ensures victory, the Polish people would probably hold the advantage when struggling with the Nazis. The scene ends up with Bronski’s speaking “High myself!”, as Hitler. It is certainly ironic but as Bronski says, it will make people laugh. As for stage performers, they are really active and professional, but at the same time, I can still see their passion for the country. This may be considered as the power that support them to choose to be or not to be when the Nazis is damaging their motherland.

Apart from the famous lines “To be or not to be”, it is no hard to find another lines that are repeated in many scenes. “If you prick us do we not bleed? If you tickle us do we not laugh? If you poison us do we not die? And if you wrong us shall we not revenge?” The typical sentences are from Shylock, a character in Shakespeare’s comedy The Merchant of Venice, the role who Greenburg longs to play. And the lines appear for three times. The first time that Greenburg says the lines is in the theater before the stage play, with a desiring mind to act as Shylock. He, together with Bronski, is not a famous actor, but he still believes in his talent in acting, especially playing the role of Shylock. The second time is in the street, also with Bronski, Greenburg says the lines in a sad and despairing tone while seeing the city of destruction and the homeless people. Although they are worrying about their life, to be specific, the acting career, they are more indignant than desperate. Hate and more hate is the answer to the terroristic Nazis. The new spirit that comes along the people of Poland gives them the passion and power to fight against their enemy, any time at any place. This is why the third time that lines appear. After the destruction of Poland, the Nazis are planning a stage show at the theater in honor of Hitler, while Sobinski and the other actors sneak in dressed as the Nazis. Among them comes Bronski, who disguises as Hitler with the Hitler mustache. The actors do not show up until Hitler arrives and takes his seat, then, Greenberg bursts in on when the Nazis are singing the German national anthem in the room. Now wearing a Hitler mustache, Bronski, surrounded by his entourage of actors dressed as Nazi officers appear to talk with Greenburg. Playing as the head of Hitler's guard, Tura questions Greenburg, which gives the actor a chance to deliver Shylock's famous speech in a real play. The ending that he says: "If you wrong us, shall we not revenge?" is not just a play line, it is the answer that he and the people of Poland give to the Nazis. With Tura’s ordering his "officers" to take Greenberg away and recommending that Hitler(in fact Bronski) leave Poland immediately, all the actors march out and get in Hitler's cars and drive away. This is the revenge they take on the Nazis. To be or not to be, to be or to survive, to save oneself and the others, we need to answer this question and do something for it. With the excellent acting skills and strong passion as well as the great wisdom, they make a wonderful success in protecting the underground organization.

Besides these, we can still see how wise the actors are when fighting against the Nazis. When the real Siletsky's dead body is discovered in the theater, Tura who disguises as Siletsky comes to Ehrhardt without knowing the fact. When asked to stay with the dead body, he shaves off Siletsky's beard and then attaches a spare fake beard that he carries in his pocket in order to make Ehrhardt believe that the dead one is fake. He makes it and he also escapes the Gestapo headquarters successfully with the help of his fellow actors by exposing his fake identity, ironically. For Tura, it is really a question for him answer whether to live or die under that circumstance, and of course he chooses to live with his wits. Fighting with the Nazis is not an easy thing but they make it with wisdom, as well as the love of their nation and compatriots .

To be or not to be is a question that should be answered by ourselves. Although we may not come along with the conditions that appear in the film. Somehow we may be in a dilemma in which we have to choose between two or more alternatives, to be or not to be. Never to be too panic or desperate, after all, where there is a will, there is a way. Even when you are in situation of life and death like Tura, don’t give up because the one who is most likely to save you is yourself. Think of the passion you have for yourself, family, lover and the life you are looking forward to, and come up with ways that can make it come true. As Greenburg says, if you wrong us, shall we not revenge? If the obstacles of life wrong you then revenge with your passion and wits and turn them to your advantage for your life.
