There is no dispute that humans have five basic sensory functions: sight, hearing, touch, smell and taste. But some insist that humans also have a mysterious sixth sense of what seems to be invisible. Hollywood made a movie about it where people could meet dead people and even talk to them, which is not very reliable.

However, the scientific community does have a "sixth sense," which refers to our sense of our place in space, known in scientific terms as proprioception. People born without a sixth sense are hard to find, so professor carsten bernmann, a pediatric neurophysiologist at the national institutes of health, had the good luck to find two. Both men had varying degrees of deformities in their hips, fingers, toes and spinal column, as well as symptoms such as unsteady walking and uncoordinated limb movements.

In tests, professor bernmann found that both of their Piezo2 genes had lost activity. Instead, professor boneman removed the Piezo2 gene in both men. The two girls who lost the gene were not only alive, but also in good health. After further study, it was found that neither man's skin could feel the vibrating tuning fork. With a soft brush gently brush two people's palms, they do not feel. But if they brush their skin with hairs, they'll feel like they've been pricked with tiny needles.

The results of the next series of tests were even more shocking. The girls were able to walk with their eyes open, but when blindfolded, they had to be helped to stand. In another test, researchers asked two people to reach out and touch an object in front of the tip of their nose. They were able to do this easily with their eyes open, but not at all with their eyes closed. Finally, the researchers blindfolded the girls and grabbed their forearms and swung them up and down. The two subjects could not tell exactly where their forearms were, indicating that they had no sense of the spatial position of their bodies.

Professor bernemann believes that this Piezo2 is the sixth sense gene long sought by science. People who lack the gene feel normal about temperature and tingling, but have no idea where they are in space. Furthermore, he suggests that Piezo2 genes differ in human populations, leading to differences in how people perceive their body position, resulting in awkward movements in some people and flexible movements in others. So, here remind P.E. teachers, if later encounter "clumsy" students please do not easily scold, they are likely to be born without this ability.
