Introduction

Lost Names is a historical novel. The author narrated the conflicts between Korean people and ruthless Japanese rulers from a boy’s perspective. Using seven chronological stories, the author represented the history between 1932 and 1945. This novel offers us an access to know how the Japanese governed Korea. Most of all, despite all the inhumane oppressions and brainwashing from Japanese invaders, how the general Korean people armed themselves with strong will power so that they cannot be conquered. This novel reveals that no souls can be forced to submissive to any hegemony. With strong will power and perseverance, those who suffered from the tyranny of invaders would finally liberate themselves.

 

Analysis and comments of important characters

As a representation of history, this fiction describes numerous and various ways the Japanese occupiers adopted to make Korean people submissive to the Japanese Emperor. In general, Korean people were required to discard their own traditions and accept whatever that was Japanese. School students were prohibited from studying either Korean language or Korean history. Instead, they have to endure the Japanese brainwashing by studying and speaking Japanese. Moreover, the general Koreans were not left behind, either. They were demanded to go to shrines that were built in every town and village in Korea. In addition, all publications and radio programs that had once been Korean were all replaced by Japanese ones. Above all, all Korean people were required to desert their Korean names and adopt new Japanese names.

Escaping from one’s homeland is not the ultimate solution for those who aspire for freedom. In the first chapter, the author describes a scene where a family tried to cross the border to entering Manchuria in the winter of 1933. At that time, the father’s parole was over just a week ago. This implied the family’s eagerness of leaving the country and embracing a new life. However, because of his history of fighting against Japanese rulers, the father was taken away by the Japanese police officers. He must have been beaten while his wife and child standing in the snow and waiting for him. After the family members got together, they finally decided to cross the Tuman River after an arduous trek and entered Manchuria.

Although the author did not mention it, we can assume that the family enjoyed several comparatively happy years before another misfortune came. According to world history, Japanese troops invaded and took over Manchuria in 1934. This meant that the family’s paradise at Manchuria was about to be overthrown by exactly the same people who robbed their homeland away. As a man of great insight and a responsible son, the father soon noticed that escaping to another place cannot solve the awkward problem of his family. So he brought his family members with him and went back to Korea after staying in China for five years.

With all the good old Korean traditions inherited from his parents, the boy developed some new traits which helped him to form new perspectives and his own ways to fight against ruthless autarchy. As we know, parents play significant roles in the development of children’s personalities. This also applied to the boy. The stories told by the mother and grandfather, and the ways the other people treated his father were all helpful in the development of his personality. As a young person who believed in the freedom of Korea as his family members did, the boy observed numerous “strange” things at school. For instance, the students were required to bow toward the direction of Japanese Imperial Palace every morning, recite the Japanese national slogans, sing martial songs, and go to school every Sunday morning to listen to the speech of the Japanese principal.

Rising on ones’ feet starts from perceiving things in a more aggressive but practical way. This can be firstly observed from the boy’s thoughts and actions at the grave yards. After changing his name, he joined his father and grandfather to the grave yards. He felt sad at first. But when he saw the helpless people around him yelling, chanting and crying, he started to feel repulsed and infuriated. We could understand that he was furious towards people who only pitied themselves and would not do anything to change the current situations. But as a boy, with the limited knowledge he possessed, he could not offer much to those in need. Therefore, he chose to make a fuss and leave the scene. This is the right way to deal with things that you cannot control.

From the boy’s accounts, it was obvious that in the Japanese rulers’ eyes, schools were not built to educate children; they were built to enslave the new generation, both physically and mentally. The students were prohibited from studying Korean language or Korean history. Instead, all things Japanese were infused into the children’s brains. It can be seen from history that Japanese also took these measures of enslaving people in other countries such as China, Singapore, and Malaysia etc. Fortunately, the boy’s parents understood the significance of preserving their language. So they taught him and his siblings Korean at home. Besides, they would not speak Japanese to each other at home, which was another way of helping the boy to notice his parents’ standpoints towards Japanese invaders.

When the boy entered junior high school, the Japanese rulers began to use teenagers of his age as labors. The boy and his peers were forced to work on a so-called airfield. It was apparent that the project was useless. But the Japanese inspectors would still turn a blind eye on the poor health condition of the students. The boy seemed to care little about this bad experience because he had already developed a strong heart during the years. With a strong patriotic heart, he despised everything of the Japanese Empire.

People under oppression may not have the courage to fight for themselves, but they would come out for their compatriots. In the novel, the boy got beaten several times. The readers could easily find out that the reasons were all lame. The Japanese who beat the boy were just bullying around. These events reveal another way that the Japanese suppressed Koreans: threaten people with violence. When the boy was beaten the first time, he received help from his Korean teacher. Later, from the conversations among the teacher, the boy and the boy’s family members, we can feel the great warmth from people of the same race. From their actions, we can well understand that none of them would yield to hegemonism.

Under extreme conditions, having patience is more helpful than acting recklessly. In my opinion, the most important event in the novel was when the boy’s family went to change their names. With all the brainwashing previously, the Japanese rulers showed no intention of stopping their mental invasion toward Korean people. All the Koreans were asked to go to the police station to register their new Japanese names. As a renowned person who used to actively fight against Japanese invasion, the father did not hesitate on this occasion. When I read his actions at first, I did not follow how come a former warrior would perform this without resistance. Then, it occurred to me that as a man in a big family, the father cannot risk the lives of his family members for protecting his Korean name. Moreover, the father was not a conformist either. The name he chose, Iwamoto, which meant rock-foundation, revealed his determination to keep opposing Japanese rulers and striding towards liberty.

Changing their names into Japanese ones meant a great humiliation to Koreans. This is confirmed by the fact that traditional Asians regard family names as precious legacies from their ancestors, symbols they carry to remind themselves of their missions and family or nation histories. However, the heroes in the novel well understood that they cannot survive if they refuse to change their names. Feeling twisted and humiliated, they wore their traditional dresses and went to the graves of their ancestors to confess and pray. These kinds of actions were supposed to bring soothed and comforted feelings for the hurt people.

In terms of the traditional Korean women, the ways they contributed to the family were quite important but subtle. The mother and grandmother tried their best to feed their family members. Since most of the crops and fouls were forced by law to be sold to the Japanese government at very low prices, a great number of Koreans suffered from malnutrition owing to the lack of food. Fortunately, the boy’s family secured the access to good food. And these two women conveyed their dissatisfaction by informing the boy of the reasons of their hard life.

Through the whole book, the author presents the theme that where there is oppression, there is resistance. By introducing us the ways different characters fought against the Japanese oppression, he implicitly expressed his negative attitudes towards fascists and his eagerness towards freedom and equality.

 

Conclusion

The author conveyed the notion of where there is oppression, there is resistance through the seven stories he narrated. The main characters in Lost Names all presented a strong will power. Their craving for freedom and self-esteem was actually prevalent at that time. This made Korea a country that can only be defeated, not conquered. With their homelands robbed by Japanese invaders, the Korean people applied patience and wittiness to protect the integrity of their personalities and territories. When the opportunity presented itself, they did not hesitate but seized it.
