The United States, as well as the world is facing an increasing severity and frequency of natural disasters. Natural disasters often happen without the notice of human being. For example, even the most experienced geologists fail to predict earthquake. The recent case is the magnitude 8.1 earthquake and multiple strong tremors in Nepal which not only kills thousands of people, but also destroys historic relics. 

Facing the constant challenges from Mother Nature, are we ready to face them? As a matter of fact, it is impossible to predict or avoid natural disasters, however are we prepared for them? I am not optimistic of it. Natural disasters often happen disorderly and out of expectation. The stricken area and range cannot be confirmed immediately which directly leads a slow reaction and rescue action. Meanwhile being affected by the natural disaster, the rescue goods and facilities might be damaged, the emergency team can not arrive the scene on time. If local emergency team fails to conduct rescue and excavation activities, the nation and state level rescue team must step in. Then another issue comes up, allocating the resources from national level requires more time and energy. The delayed relief work might result in more serious damage. 

To ensure an instant reaction, an efficient communication mechanism should be set up. When natural disasters happen, the affected range could be reported to state and nation level at the same time, a coordinated relief package could be initiated and implemented immediately. 

  2. How Come the Natural Disasters Occur?

To tackle these problems, some may argue whether it is possible to prevent or reduce the possibilities of natural disaster from occurring. I believe in the future, there will be an increasing possibility of natural hits would happen. Based on the information from NASA, researches indicated that an increasing frequency and severity of extreme weather happen due the overall global warming.

NASA defines global warming as an unusual rapid Earth’s average surface temperature increases in the past century which is primarily thanks to the greenhouse gases released by human activities. It is proven by scientists. In the past 250 years, human activities contribute to an ever-increasing rate of greenhouse gases emission into the atmosphere. Since the industrial revolution in 1750, humans not only start to burn fossil fuel, but also cut down carbon absorbing forests. From 1906 to 2005, the global average surface temperature has doubled in the last 50 years. And it is predicted that temperature will go up further.

According to report published by NASA, global warming modifies rainfall frequency and volumes, erodes the coastal line, extends the plant growing period in some areas, and melts glaciers and ice bergs, furthermore, it alters the ranges of some infectious diseases. Among the changes above, some are already happening and affecting our lives de facto. The loss of the old natural balance leads to an increasing frequency and unpredictable natural disasters. Due the unpredictability of the occurring time and severity, the emergency team and rescue plan cannot react accordingly. 

In a nutshell, natural disasters will occur more often and induce more severe damage to the affected area. Meanwhile, a more thorough consideration and coordination over the relief plan from local, stats, and national levels could help reduce the impact of natural tragedies.
