Gates, the world's richest man, recently decided to step down from Microsoft within two years to focus on philanthropy. Warren buffett, the world's second-richest man, has decided to give $37 billion to charity, much of it going to the gates family's foundation. Both have attracted worldwide attention.

Gates and buffett are both American. In the United States, charity culture has a long history with its unique ideas and practices. America's charitable culture is said to be based largely on the protestant idea that the rich are merely social stewards of wealth. In other words, legally. Wealth is private, but in moral and value terms, wealth that exceeds the needs of life is social.

Carnegie, a 19th-century American tycoon, wrote a paper called "on wealth", which was called the "Gospel of wealth".

According to Carnegie, it is human nature to bequeathing excess wealth to relatives, but it often does more harm than good to those who receive it. "I left my son a curse by leaving him the almighty dollar." He welcomed the state's progressive inheritance tax, arguing that "by levying heavy inheritance taxes, the state shows that it condemns the worthless lives of selfish millionaires". Carnegie, after all, was a self-made man of wealth, with a life experience and a sense of value that went beyond money.

Carnegie believed that disposing of surplus wealth to make it truly useful to society was a skill. "It takes a lot of skill to make money and a lot of skill to spend it." He did not advocate the distribution of wealth in dribs and tubs among the people. Instead, he ran the business for the common good. Carnegie himself established a famous foundation which gave grants to the poor, to education, and to culture. At present, gates' charity activities are also conducted through the foundation. Carnegie believed that undivided generosity was an obstacle to human progress, and that the main consideration in helping others was how to help those who could help themselves.

Carnegie believed that it was the duty of the rich to "be the model of simple living" and to treat their excess as trust funds administered by them, to be carefully planned and used by thoughtful and serious men. The propriety of the rich should be judged by "sensible public sentiment". The rich should dispose of their wealth in life, so as to make it beneficial to the public good, "the richer the death, the more shameful".

Marx called the United States a "special new world with neither the concept of time nor the time to clear the consciousness of the old world". Carnegie lived in a "new world" of "vigorous and feverish material production". In the face of the gap and friction between rich and poor caused by the process of industrialization, he came up with the above concept, namely, "the proper management of wealth, so that the brotherhood of compatriots can maintain the harmonious relationship between rich and poor". His ideas have historically played a fairly positive role in sustaining American society, and their influence is still there, so it's worth noting.
