The Second World War came as a brutal tragedy for most countries in the world, but an exciting opportunity for America, who reaped a lot of benefits from it. Obviously, the US rose as a major economy, replacing Britain, after the WWII. It transformed itself into a strong capitalist country and enjoyed a bigger say over international regime for the reason that it made fortune by selling weapon to other countries. And thus its green power strongly backed up its influential status in the international community.

At the same time, visible social changes happened to the promising country, causing drastic changes to American people’ s life. All the changes, in essence, mirrored how America evolved in a new era that was ushered in by the Second World War.

To begin with, America politically, economically and militarily combated the USSR, a forcible competitor for global dominance and therefore the two countries identified a new course for the whole world. The era of Cold War fell, marking a historical stage and bringing huge changes to the rest parts of the world. A new global order was built up. Amid such international context, America worked with Europe to consolidate its power and status by establishing NATO and introducing the Marshall Plan that offered financial aid to some European countries struggling with slow economic recovery. This can be best explained by the US’ s ambition to achieve economic dominance in the West. To crack down on communists, it also launched campaigns to defeat labor unions. All those steps it took to fight against the USSR came to exert a measurable impact on itself and give rise to transformations in America.

The Cold War actually generated widespread anxiety in America. And the primary culprit was nuclear weapon, since Soviet Union exploded atomic bomb in 1949. During that time, the general public bubbled over with fear of uncertainties. And American nation showed massive anxiety toward Soviet Union, who stayed as a frightening rival in global dominance. Coupled with that, the communist culture brought by USSR could, to some degree delivered a blow to ideology in American society. It is safe to infer that the US targeted Asia as a scapegoat and launched Vietnam War. Vietnam had to bear the crunch and in some way carried the can for America.

However, the military intrusion into Vietnam triggered protest at home. Those with a strong sense of anti-war blamed American government for its reckless act. And such domestic discontent contributed to wide-ranging social changes in all walks of life.

The rise of American nation after the war seemed to give birth to incomparable confidence of people. They were convinced in national greatness and that they could overcome any difficulties as long as holding dreams. Such national confidence could be fully expressed by the Mount Rushmore National Memorial and the words of “God bless America” printed on notes. The idea of “American dream” was preached for. The community showcased its image to the outside world as a vigorous, invincible group. And it is fair to say such national confidence lingers on even today.

The American community appeared dynamic as a whole. Economically, the US scaled new heights and transformed itself from an emerging economy into the strongest global player. The commerce sector gathered momentum along with industrial upgrading. As infrastructure was greatly improved, people could lead a better life.

One of the factors that contributed to such vital social atmosphere was baby boom. The booming population acted as a big driver for specific industries including toy, cartoon and music industries. It is safe to say baby boom had a long-lasting impact on America. Economically, baby boomers advanced the development of the market of maternal and infant goods. And when they grew up at age for marriage, real estate and automobile industries gained momentum for they began to built families. And when they grew older, they began to invest and consume and thus financial and banking sectors rose. Besides, America saw a vigorous, booming economic landscape when baby boomers were at working age. It enjoyed adequate labors because baby boomers energized job market.

Having said that, the promising picture was just temporary as baby boomers would become old someday. The problem of aging population posed a great challenge to American government, who had to face the heavy burden of social welfare. On top of that, America saw the decline in heavy industry. This can be traced to the increase in well-educated labors who aspired to become white-collar and the boom of service industry.

Everything appeared promising in America. At home, consumer spending was on the rise as an important driver for GDP. Credit cards emerged as the rage. Subsidized by tax breaks, mortgages and loans were cheap. Culturally, religious dominance of Christianity was challenged by atheism. More and more teen rebels emerged and they pursued sensual enjoyments and upheld hedonism. And this boiled down to the puzzlement they held toward future due to uncertainties caused by social changes. Those teenagers actually were seeking an approach to self-realization. Generally, it was an era of vitality and aspiration, which could be indicated by the peak membership rate of civic engagement in 1960s.

Besides, the political picture in America also changed drastically, as political partisanship emerged as a visible change in American history. This political transformation essentially made a measurable change to American political landscape. Even today, Democrats and Republicans stand as the biggest parties dominating America.

In 1960s, American people seemed cynical than any other times, as social inequality was mounting. Among others, one movement that fought inequality was especially monumental. It was the civil rights movement launched and organized by Martin Luther King. The movement targeted at racial discrimination against black people. Its influence swept over the whole country and changed how American people thought about race and color.

Before the well-recognized movement, racial segregation was the norm in America. It was taken as granted that black people needed to give away to the white. The black and white could not have equal rights. The black people often suffered from prejudice and contempt just owing to their color. They might lose job opportunities and even dignity in social interaction.

It is worth mentioning that Ku Klux Klan emerged opposed to equal rights for both the white and black. It was a villainous group with extreme egocentric thinking on race. At that time, social turbulence seemed everywhere on this land. The angry and desperate black people came to fight against racial discrimination. After that movement, the white began to reflect over themselves and put more emphasis on racial equality, despite that there remained some racists defying the principle of equality —— was a primary human right. They conspired to produce violence and intimidation in the community, but the overwhelming trend was racial equality and respect for all.

Apart from racial discrimination, gender prejudice pervaded. The land of the US seemed to brim over with cynicism and hatred, which can be seen from the emergence of Ku Klux Klan.

Such emotional extremity could be, to some extent, explained by the runaway confidence of America. After the Second World War, other countries in the world were struggling with economic recovery——like Europe, and civil wars——say, China. It seemed that America was the sole lucky dog. It doubled its economic size, enjoyed absolute dominance politically and economically. The remarkable progress it made in all respects served as a breeding ground for ethnocentrism. America held excessive confidence and believed they deserved all the best in the world. And if there emerged a rival, like the USSR, they might feel rather frightened and feared that another nation would defeat them. America’ s ethnocentrism and individualism did not allow other countries, like Soviet Union or China, to rival or even supersede themselves.

America’ s overconfidence and care about supremacy triggered widespread anxiety at home. Such anxiety and emotion arose from its desire to defense itself and safeguard its status. And that is where chauvinism came from. It seemed that the whole country failed to take a fair and clear view toward the outside world and itself. They had limited understanding about the effects brought about by actions. Obviously, America flunked to adapt to its new position in the planet and to the wide-ranging social changes at home. As a consequence, the whole nation seemed anxious and emotional.

It came as a bad new for America that China turned out to be taken over by communists rather than Kuomintang, who stood in the support of America. The US lost China. In other words, it lost a supportive force in the world and therefore its dominance would be challenged.

To address those threatening changes, America had to make reactions. Certainly, anti-communism was a principal step it took to eliminate existing or potential social instabilities. It also overreached itself into other countries including Vietnam and Europe to transfer its anxiety and ambition. It had to reduce domestic discontent through civil movements. Fortunately, along with the end of Cold War and Clinton economic boom, America embraced hope.
