War is the biggest source of despair throughout the history of mankind. From the earliest form of war, which is fight between individuals and herds over food, resources and territory, war has developed with human civilization that are no longer easily understood and controlled. The devastations brought by war is further discussed in three categories, which are the loss of humanity, the despair caused for the families of died soldiers, as well as the destructive nature of war to the countries and peoples suffering from it.

The deprivation of humanity brought by war is first reflected by how it suppresses humanity in soldiers and create horrifying abnormalities. Driven by the desire to win, the war had long deviated from the natural form of fights, but evolved into something much more evil with the invention of weapons. At defeat, injured soldiers run for their lives like animals, with their sense blurred after being exposed to the intensity of bomb fires (Owen, 292). The use of weapons make the war field more like living hell, where human sufferings are seeing everywhere. Many of the unethical weapons were invented so that fighting a war would become more “convenient”. However, such weapons added to the suffering of humans and created nothing but nightmares for those who experienced them. In Dulce et decorum est, Owen (293) described how soldiers died of chemical gas before him: “In all my dreams, before my helpless sight, He plunges at me, guttering, choking, drowning.” Soldiers who died from chemical gas were suffocating and suffering for minutes before they stopped breathing. As a result of the weapons, only more of the similar type was developed, creating even more despair. The once young, beautiful and vibrant lives were rotten by the weapons of the war, which formed a distinctive comparison against the heated fanaticism during the recruitment of soldiers. No such despair is shown to the new recruits. They were only filled with patriotism and deceived into the war fields.

War has also brought despair to countless families all over the world. In Come Up from the Fields Father, the poet wrote: “While they stand at home at the door he is dead already, the only son is dead (Whitman, 297).” To the family who lost their only son, war was nothing but cruelty. Whitman depicts a peaceful image of country life, where apple trees, autumn leaves, grape vines form a beautiful scenery after the rain (Whitman, 296). This could have been the life of the young soldier who lost his life, yet the chances are gone for good. It was even more pathetic that few of the common people understood the true motivations of the war. They had little concern with the power struggles of the powers of the world, yet they have to pay the price of these conflicts, with the life of their son. It hardly seems fair using any reason to justify such wars.

The sorrows of the parents for losing their children is beyond compare, as it is only natural for children to bid farewell with their parents. However, war has turned it around again. In a heart-breaking short story by Luigi Pirandello, the sorrows of an old man who had lost his son to the war is described as follows:

“The old man, too, turned to look at her, fixing his great, bulging, horribly watery light gray eyes, deep in her face. For some time, he tried to answer, but words failed him. He looked and looked at her, almost as if only then—at that silly, incongruous question—he had suddenly realized at last that his son was really dead—gone forever—forever. His face contracted, became horribly distorted, then he snatched in haste a handkerchief from his pocket and, to the amazement of everyone, broke into harrowing, heart-breaking, uncontrollable sobs.”

Despite the effort that the man made trying to convince himself that his son died of personal choice, even to laugh about it. He couldn’t face the fact directly. Once the women asked him “is your son really dead?", all of the defense system crumbled as the simple question broke the man down. It is hardly imaginable how deep such sorrows can be, but one is certain that war is the primary cause for them.

Although Art of War by Sun Tzu is commonly believed to be a book about strategies in the war fields, the book carries anti-war thinking as well, especially in the chapter on the attack by fire (Sun-Tzu and Lionel, 143). Sun-Tzu discusses the five elements of fire attacks emphasizing the importance of climate in such attacks. In the age of cold arms, attack by fire is regarded as one of the most effective strategies of war. Due to the nature of such attacks, fire reveals the cruel side of war. Thus, Sun-Tzu stressed that unless it is absolutely necessary with guaranteed effectiveness, use of fire should be minimized. Such an idea is regarded as the earlies anti-war thinking in ancient China and the world. in addition, Sun-Tzu also believes that “There is no instance of a country having benefited from prolonged warfare (Sun-Tzu and Lionel, 43).” He was aware thousands of years ago, the damages wars can bring to the people.

According to Sun-Tzu, “It is only one who is thoroughly acquainted with the evils of war that can thoroughly understand the profitable way of carrying it on (Sun-Tzu and Lionel, 43).” However, there is doubt that anyone who has thoroughly seen the evils of war is still capable of carrying it on in any way. The destruction of humanity and creation of suffering for both the soldiers and their families, as well as the suffering on the national scale would make any justifications for war weak and invalid. Some believe that it is the nature of humans to maximize their interest even at the cost of peace. However, the despair and devastations caused by war as discussed above, or the action of war itself, should be minimized and eventually eliminated with the development of human civilization.
