Reflections on Abraham Cahans A Sweatshop Romance

In A Sweatshop Romance, Abraham Cahan surrounds the romantic relationship between the baster called David and the finisher girl named Beile in a sweatshop. Firstly, Abraham Cahan gives a brief introduction about this shop which is described to be somewhat poor. Also, the author lists the owner of this sweatshop Leizer, his wife Zlate as well as their son. At the same time, the main employees in this sweatshop have been provided, including the machine operator Heyman, one baster David, one finisher girl Beile and one presser Meyer. All the employees in this sweatshop have to make twelve coats a day and they are paid quite little. However, they are afraid of losing their job so that they keep enduring all the time. At the first place, Beile is unknown about whether she likes Heyman or not and she listens to her mother’s words to date with Heyman, thus David’s attention to her is just a secret. Later on, the climax is when Leizer’s wife Zlate asks Beile to buy soda for her and she gives Beile a nickel. But Beile would like not to follow her order and she chooses not to act. Under this circumstance, Heyman says nothing to help Beile and it is David that helps her. Therefore Beile tends to see her true heart and understands that her true love is David but not Heyman.

Based on the above, it is obvious to detect that this story is set in a sweatshop and the sweatshop described in this story is a place where work is rather scarce, working conditions is terrible and the treatment received by the employees within is poor. Or maybe it can be put in another way that it is hard for the employees to earn a cent in this sweatshop.

And when it comes to the reasons why the author sets a love story in a sweatshop but not a very romantic place, the first reason is that the author would like to emphasize the uneasiness for those people working in the sweatshop to pursue their romance so that more attention and care can be given to those people. Secondly, setting a love story in a very romantic place is just too numerous to enumerate and the value of another love story in a romantic place is not very great. Instead, setting a love story in a sweatshop can be easier to arouse the attention of the audience and leave a deeper impression on the audience in the meantime.

Moreover, the existence of a sweatshop in this story tells us about American history in late 19th century. To put it more specifically, the working class immigrants in New York is just like the employees in this sweatshop and they actually suffer a lot. And it is hard for them to make a living in this unequal society. In the opposite, the native people are just like the owners of the sweatshops and they look down upon those immigrants. Apart from that, the native people treat those immigrants as cheap labor and they exploit those immigrants, resulting in the detrimental conditions for the immigrants in the end.

As for the primary audience of this story, I would like to say that the potential reader of this story includes both the working class immigrants in New York in 1900s and the owners of sweatshops. On the one hand, the author would like the working class immigrants in New York in 1900s learn to fight for their own rights and interests and they have to rebel against all kinds of unequal treatments, just like what David and Beile do to Zlate. On the other hand, the author would like to remind the owners of sweatshops that they should respect the employees and treat them with humanity and care but not slaves. The behavior of Zlate should undoubtedly be avoided. Only in this way can the life of the vast majority of the working class immigrants in New York be changed more or less; otherwise the tragedy of those immigrants will continue to happen nonstop.
