Environmental Impacts Of Tourism In Mauritius

introduce

Tourism has become a major focus of all countries, mainly small island developing States, and has an economic, socio-cultural and environmental impact on residents. Therefore, it is necessary to understand the views of local residents on how to promote tourism. The purpose of this study is to provide a theoretical basis and framework for assessing the host country's attitude towards the environmental impact of tourism in Mauritius. Tourism and environment are interrelated; with the rapid growth of the demand for the interaction between tourists and natural environment, the relationship between tourism and environment has been widely recognized. Tourism has the ability to protect and destroy the environment. Studying environmental impacts is a key component of understanding how tourism affects the environment in Mauritius. The research literature on the nature of the main interactive relationship between tourists and host countries, the characteristics of the relationship between host countries and tourists and its relationship with the environment has been very extensive. Researchers are more interested in the interaction between tourists and hosts. However, some studies have studied this issue from the perspective of tourism. In order to achieve the purpose of the study, a questionnaire was designed and investigated among the local residents. In the analysis part, the quantitative method is used, and the purpose and goal are consistent with most of the relevant literature. This paper describes the methodology of this study, sampling design, instrument selection, data collection requirements, and discusses the limitations of this study, so as to draw the conclusions and suggestions of this study.

overview of Mauritius

Mauritius is a small island in the Indian Ocean, located on the African continent. The area of Mauritius is about 2040 square kilometers. The population is about 1.3 million. Among them, 68% are Indo Mauritians, 27% are Creoles, 3% are middle Mauritians and 2% are French Mauritians. The religions in Mauritius are: Hindus 48%, Creole 27%, Muslims 16.6%, Christianity 8.6% and others 2.5%. Since 1968, Mauritius has grown from an agriculture based low-income economy to a diversified middle-income economy with growing industrial, financial and tourism sectors. The country's economy is dependent on sugar, tourism, textiles, clothing and financial services, and it is expanding into information technology. The annual growth rate of tourism is between 5% and 6%. This remarkable growth has made income distribution more equitable, raised life expectancy, reduced infant mortality and greatly improved infrastructure. Mauritius has become one of the most successful and competitive economies in Africa; in 2010, its GDP at market prices was estimated to be US $9.5 billion, and its per capita income was US $7420, which is one of the highest in Africa. In addition, Mauritius has established international relations with western countries, India and countries in southern and eastern Africa. It is a member of the African Union (AU), the World Trade Organization (WTO), the Commonwealth, francophone countries, the southern African Development Community (SADC), the Indian Ocean Commission, the common market for Eastern and southern Africa (COMESA) and the Indian Ocean coastal Association.

problem statement

Tourism is the main industry of many countries in the world, and it is still a valuable sector. Tourism also contributes a lot to the country's economy. The development of tourism challenges the environment of a country. With the increasing popularity of tourism development, the environment often changes (husband & Harrison, 1996), the ability to absorb a large number of people will be challenged (WTO, 1990), and environmental problems will often increase. In recent years, the tourism industry in Mauritius has caused considerable negative impact on the environment. This issue is very controversial, because the negative impact of tourism on the environment must be minimized, and the goal must be to build a green Mauritius. The challenge, therefore, is to maintain the long-term sustainability of tourism in Mauritius and to benefit from it. In general, tourism is seen as an opportunity for economic development, a tool for conservation of natural resources, and an opportunity for community development and empowerment of local people. Therefore, it is important to assess the views of Mauritian residents on the environmental impact of tourism and to understand whether they support the ongoing tourism development. It is very complicated to understand the attitude of the residents. Research shows that residents' attitude towards environment is a sign of supporting the development of tourism (gursay, 2002 & Jurowski, 1997). For residents, investors and policy makers, it is important to have a good understanding of the factors influencing development support (gursay & Rutherford, 2004). Residents must have a positive view on Tourism in order to maintain a country's tourism development. It is agreed that the active support of the host country's population contributes to the sustainability of a country.
