Da Vinci's life story and masterpiece

1. Brief introduction of Da Vinci’s life story

Leonardo da Vinci was a symbol of wisdom for human beings. He’s born of divinely infinite ideals, attempting to recreate the universal beauties, measuring the universal immensity and deciphering the universal mysteries. Unfortunately he only had life and power of common people. His ambitions were for everything to be discovered, studied and created. And his life was a path that he did not walk it through, on which it was bestrewed with lofty and unfinished fragments and pieces. He said in sadness before he died that he had never completed a single work throughout his life ([2] The Life of Leonardo da Vinchi, 1975).

Leonardo was born in a small town of Folorence’s suburbs named as Vinci, where he got his name. When he was five years old, he could by memory draw out his mother’s portrait on the sandy beach. On the site, he could also compose improvised music and lyrics while accompanying with singing, which attracted lots of high praises. As his lawyer father Anthony realized his son’s painting talents, he decided to send him for further study to an artist Verrocchio’s workshop in Florence. There he was not only exposed to educations of painting, sculpture and art of buildings, but he could get influence of other sciences. At the Verrocchio’s workshop, Vinci once researched relationship between light and shade changes and invented a progressive drawing of light and shade. He spent almost six years at Verrocchio’s workshop and grew up to a model with modern scientific thoughts and full of courage to explore human wisdom. At Florence Vinci could not be able to bring his talents into play as he had all his heart set on taking his arts and wisdom into an actual world with glories upon human beings.

At his thirty one years old, he wrote a letter to Milano Grand Duke Ludovico Sfcha. In the letter, he listed out various kinds of his talents and capabilities, indicating in the letter end that he could make a horse-riding statue for Grand Duke’s father and make it become an unprecedented giant statue in the world. Finally at his 41 years old, this great master only completed his masterpiece of clay statue and did not continue to the end without sufficient copper materials. And this statue was destroyed by French troop’s invasion. Or it could become one of world’s wonders. However, what Duke reimbursed for his talents and hard working were some golden mottos instead of golden coins, which made him feel not so easy. In order to comfort him, the Grand Duke brought him to draw a painting for Milan Geleiqi Temple, which later on became “The Last Supper”. If say “The Last Supper” was the most famous religious painting, another masterpiece “Mona Lisa” would be worthy of the most famous and greatest portrait in the world that Vinci produced when he returned back to Florence at his age of 51. These two worldly-famous works carved Da Vinci’s name ever remembered in the annals of history. The particular artistic language of Da Vinci was to take advantage of light and shade methods to create cubic dimension of the plane images. He once said, ‘the most wonders during the painting process were to enable the plane images present concave-convex feelings’. He used light’s changing theories for the spheroplast and firstly invented shifting methods of light and shade that is as much consistent as fog transition from light to dark in image without distinctive demarcation. This method was vividly shown on the model portrait of “Mona Lisa”. Vasari assumed that this light-and-shade painting method was a transition point for the art of painting.

Throughout his life, Da Vinchi had been searching for the art’s noble temperament and feeling satisfied only in works creation of beauty. The Italian science and intellect, pursuit and creation of beauty in the 15 century culminated to the peak of perfection for Da Vinchi. Unfortunately, this great master’s talents had not been valued and recognized in his later years and he felt so sad about Pope’s ignorance. In 1515, the King Francois Thi of France recaptured Milan’s lands and invited the great master as a count painter to take up residence in Kelubao France. In 1519, the master died in a foreign country at the age of 67. His student Francis Ke·Mu Energy remarked, ‘Vinchi’s death was a loss for everyone. Our creator was able to recreate such talented person’.

2. Appreciation of Da Vinchi’s works

First of all, one of Da Vinchi’s master works is “Mona Lisa”. This oil painting portrays a Florence businessman Joconde’s wife. On this painting, the body of figure inclines to one side somewhat. The outline is in neat formation with soft and thin veil on her head, smiles at her mouth’s corner and face. Two hands are naturally put together gracefully and generously. The painter makes profound analyses and artistic generalization upon figure’s expression and psychology. Remarkably, he grasps facial smiles that can be perceived and not yet fixed and makes such fleeting expression become a delightful symbol of eternity. Loftiness, purity, gentleness, dignity, confidence and explicitly captivating smiles are termed as a mysterious smile by artistic historians. Moreover, the painter also puts too many efforts on portraying the right hand of Mona Lisa. Gently and relaxingly, the right hand comes out as if from the sleeve with full of representability and vitality. Her right hand is known as the most beautiful hand in the world that makes the whole figure appear excessively graceful, serene and peaceful. Her clothing color is dark and plain without any ornament, which is aimed at concentrating audience’s attention on the figure’s image. The painting’s background is dim with indistinct hilly mountain and curly road, wispy lake surface and poetic context, which present a vast and far-reaching spacious impression. Da Vinchi himself treasures this painting so much and always replies with an excuse that he travels with everywhere with it as it is for unfinished work. This painting is ranked as divine work by later generation as it sufficiently expresses Da Vinchi’s ideals of humanism, manifests the artist life philosophy and aesthetic ideal image and plays a significant role in development of realistic portrait painting in Europe.

Second is Da Vinchi’s another master work “The Last Supper”. This wall painting is based upon story in The New Testment that Judas gives away Jesus. What this painting tells is that Jesus and his 12 disciples dine together and intense facial changes and inner-mind responses of these 12 disciples when Jesus suddenly said during the dinner that one of your guys wanted to betray me. Jesus was sitting in the middle with composed and kindly expression and two hands unfolded as he just finished that word. 12 disciples, by 3 people in one group, separately sit beside Jesus. John, Peter and Judas were for one group on the left side. Judas’s quickly turning his body and restlessly holding firm to his money bag with full of silver coins. His facial expression was so dark with his floating eyes to Jesus. And John put his hands on the table and had a worried look. He crouched closer to John, which looks that he’s asking John for something. With a table knife in his hand, it seems that he already knew who the betrayer is and wanted to give him a stab. With amazing artistic power, the painter portrays a stern and tense atmosphere, which can be said as an immortal masterpiece. Profound elaboration of subject, perfect composition, dramatic conception and substantial psychological description of characters are all quite outstanding, which represent the peak of renaissance ([1] Leonardo Da Vinchi’s Influence on Renaissance Anatomy, 1964).

3. Conclusion

Among numerous artists, what interests me most is Da Vinchi. He is not only an outstanding artist, he is also an extraordinary eclectics. He is so proficient and gifted in a wide-range of sciences, for which later generations have fabricated many more legendary experiences for him. There is no wonder that everything could happen on him, which also add somewhat mysterious colors for him.

This process of writing the essay will be also my learning process. Through my study of it, I have certain understanding of Da Vinchi and his painting works. Leonardo da Vinci is an unprecedented talent that nobody can catch up with him from history or even the future. He’s left many uncertainties and speculations to our common people. It is believed that relevant research for Da Vinchi will not be stopped. We also expect that one day a scholar could discover documentary recordings that can be used to decipher the all remaining issues.
