1. Introduction

There has been several breakthroughs in scientific area since 20th century, which obviously changes the pattern of the world and human’s lifestyle. People from different cultures are able to share the information and resources through the internet to get them closer and closer. As a result, the term ‘global village’ comes into being. Therefore, ‘Intercultural communication’ is playing a significant role in contemporary society.

Intercultural communication involves many different fields such as tourism, education, health care and overseas assignments etc. Each of them has its traits and functions. Our group are especially interested in the relationship between intercultural communication and education, so we decide to explore the field further, which based on the educational mode between western countries and eastern countries. As for the representative for Subject A, western countries, we choose the U.S.A , where we are quite familiar with and it enjoys a great reputation in education around the world. Accordingly, we believe China is our premium research subject B. It is because China is the biggest eastern country, and it has its strong traits in teaching and learning, which is enough to represent the majority of eastern countries. When it comes to the research methods, we mainly studied relevant texts. Besides, we also made a small interviews from our friends. Hereafter, we will give the details in the following paragraphs.

2. Educational mode in eastern countries - China

If we use a phrase to conclude Chinese traditional teaching and learning pattern, it should be ‘examination oriented’, especially the elementary education (primary, junior and high schools).

There was a BBC documentary called “Chinese schooling” released in 2015,it was divided into three episodes and really a hit at the moment. The documentary showed that five Chinese teachers gave the nine-year British students Math, Science, Mandarin and PE classes using fluent English but in a Chinese way. For example, in PE class, the British students were required to wear tracksuits just the same as Chinese students do, doing exercises together and attending flag-raising ceremony under teacher’s supervision. For some programs indoors, such as Math, Mandarin and Science, teachers stood in front of all the student, writing the board, board-writing seems to be a great artifact which includes all key information after the whole class. You can hear the phrases like ‘Be quiet!’ ‘Read after me’ and ‘Use your brain’ repeatedly during the class to keep order. Students sat in fixed position, had their fixed desk-mates and could not change the position without teachers’ permission. In Science class, the teacher always gave a demonstration of a new experiment then students were divided into several groups to carry out their owns, following teacher’s instruction. The teachers in Chinese classes played a role as an authority but not a participate, the pattern of education is teacher-centered but not student-centered. The purpose of these all activities was to improve students’ examination grades. Additionally, there was a contrast group that 50 British students taught by local teachers in British teaching mode. Then after several weeks teaching of both groups, the school organized final examinations of each subject. it showed that students taught by Chinese teachers commonly got higher grades than those who taught by local teachers. This result obviously disclosed the purpose of Chinese teaching, is examination oriented. Although the students in Chinese teachers’ group did not enjoy and get used to the Chinese mode, they were excited when they got good marks.

The Chinese teaching mode may be decided by the large population, limited resources and tough employment competition, Chinese students have to compete hard for high marks (Su, 2002). As all Chinese people, even people around the world know, University entrance examination in China is seen as the most significant examination in students’ career. it is said what university you attend may decide what kind of person you will be in the future. The awareness of a university is always a crucial component in your resume, and a distinct school performance as well. As for a job seeker who just graduated from the university, it seems that his/her internship experience is not as important as his/her university’s name and school performance. Therefore, it is reasonable that young students are taught in a strict way the moment they stepped into the 1st grade in primary school, they have to master all basic knowledge to prepare themselves for bigger tasks ahead. In addition, Chinese students commonly attend cram schools to make their school performance better.

Actually, not only Chinese education focuses on examination, but also do Japanese and South Korean education have similar education system. For instance, teachers in these countries are also seen as an authority, university entrance examination is as competitive as Chinese. Students in these countries should also work harder than western countries to be admitted into an elite university.  Moreover, Cram schools are also popular in those countries.

3. Educational mode in western countries - The U.S.A

When talking about America, the words come into mind first is freedom. Opening and independence. The teaching and learning mode in America is almost the same. The following texts in this part will give you a detailed illustration what American classes look like, to reflect the educational pattern in western countries.

In American classes, it is harder and harder to find where the teacher is. in the past, American teachers used to be the authority standing in the center of students just like Chinese teachers did. But nowadays, students are leading roles, group work and other interesting activities takes most of class time. However, teacher just sit in a corner and give some assistance if necessary, as well as give a conclusion at the end of the class. students talk anything as free as they like, there is no absolutely ‘right or wrong’ in American class provided their saying stands to reason. it is not hard to see that American class is student-centered, the role of teachers is no more an authority but a participate and assistant. The purpose of education is to improve students’ ability to critical thinking and encourage students to be knowledgeable in all aspects. Getting good grades is never the major character of education.

Also, not like eastern countries, cram schools are not attractive anymore by American society. Alternatively, community activity is the mainstream throughout all periods of students’ career.  Students can join any community according to their willings. it is almost the same when children choose their interest classes. I interviewed one of my friend who is an American, asking some questions about what kinds of interest classes he took when he was a child. It was wondrous to hear that his parents took him to try even everything, and finally he chose one or several of them he liked. All decisions were made by himself and no one pressed him to do anything he did not like. The reason why I was in surprise is because it is always parents who decide what kind of person their children should be in the future in China, they help the child choose an interest class and even press the child to do so.

As we see, the American education always comply with the principle of interest-oriented, including school education and parenting. To be a well-rounded person is ultimate goal for all American citizens.

4. Conclusion

In conclusion, it is obvious to see Chinese education and American education are totally different, including the purpose teaching methods and classes designed etc. As for Chinese education, the teachers in played a role as an authority, the pattern of education is teacher-centered but not student-centered. The purpose of these all activities was to improve students’ examination grades. methods used in the class is mainly grammar-translation method. Teachers’ talk time takes the main part of the class, students could not talk freely as they want, which restricts their possibility to develop their ability to critical thinking. By contrast, American class is student-centered, the role of teachers is no more an authority but a participate and assistant. The purpose of education is to improve students’ ability to critical thinking and encourage students to be knowledgeable in all aspects.

Although Chinese teaching and learning mode has its strong points, we still insist that it is time to make a change based on western education system. Because when standing at the aspect of intercultural communication, the difference in education between America and China brings several problems in communication. Chinese Students in perfect performance may get a good career in their mother land. Accordingly, they also have the opportunity to go abroad to study, to experience different cultures. However, students may loose his/her confidence in a completely different education system. It may lead to a failed communication with local people and worse career than they expected. Hence, to achieve the efficiency of intercultural communication and catch the development of the world, making a change in Chinese/eastern education system is imperative.
