There are in general three phases of major social transformations in the United States between the years 1898 and 1945, which are the internalization in the late 19th century, the isolationism and economic boost in the first two decades of the 20th century, as well as the depression that followed in the 1930s.

The United States went through the first major transformation by the end of the 19th century, both economically and culturally (L7P2). By involving into two major wars overseas in Cuba and Philippines, the United States established its status as a major global power. Economically, the wars successfully opened and expanded the international market badly needed for the domestic industries. Culturally, the international intervention gave the American people a sense of chivalric pride as the “superior” and “savior” character.

In the early decades of the 20th century, US failed to keep itself out of the European mess and had no choice but to maintain its progressive role internationally, due to the European immigrants in the country and the German barbarism (L9P11). As a result of the involvement, wartime economy was significantly boosted during the WWI. However, devastations of the war had also harmed the spirit of the country, which made it fall back to isolationism and focus on domestic developments again. Such a shift in attention has led to a great period of prosperity in the 1920s (L10P2).

Meanwhile, the US society went to the other extreme with minimized moralization and serious problems of discrimination and social segregation, which is embodied by the Johnson-Reed Act of 1924 (L10P6). Industries was booming in the country. As the representative of the prosperity, the number of cars in the US increased over two times to 23 million in only 8 years by 1929 (L10P10). The economic crisis that followed in the 1930s almost wiped out all the signs of prosperity. the great depression made the US government reconsider the importance of government intervention of economy (L11P22).

In conclusion, the social transformations demonstrate a periodic pattern. Whenever domestic affairs grow too difficult to be solved, the occurrence and involvement of war by the US would pull it out of the domestic problems. Similarly, the country shifted to isolationism once the devastations of the war was becoming unbearable. In the transformations between the two states the US society has taken a spiral form of development between 1989 and 1945.

Influences on Americans’ Transition from Isolationism to Internationalism

The influences of the internationalism of the US are both domestic and international. Initially, the US was not experienced at how to use its powers properly and keep itself unharmed by international involvements. However, these failures have led to the success of the US during the WWII, which is followed by the continuous leadership role of the country in the world till the present day.

The first instance of internationalism happened in 1989, when the US involved in and won the wars in both the Philippines and Cuba (L7P32). As a result, US got control of the Philippines, Puerto Rico, and Guam. By extending its powers to the other side of the Pacific Ocean, the US came closer in getting into the Chinese market as well. The most significant influence of this internalization, however, is not in the material or monetary benefits. Public opinion was shaped by mainstream media in the US, forming the nationalism fascination with the heroic feature, which have had significant influences on the US ever since.

The second wave of internalization happened during the WWI. By involving itself into this war, the US experienced both gains and losses (L9P19). On the one hand, US has gained experience in international affairs as well as a boost in the domestic economy. On the other hand, it has also incurred great losses of the lives of the American people. After WWI, the sense of pride, duty and superiority established in the Spanish Wars was shattered. The US people demanded peace and isolationism in the following decades, and they were rewarded with the level of prosperity that has never been achieved in the country before.

The last transition to internalization happened during the WWII. As US had just recovered from the great depression in the 1930s, the country was fully prepared for the devastations of the wars. The attack at the Pearl Harbor in 1941 (L14P2) became the turning point and the direct cause of the transformation towards internationalism. The US adopted an active role in fighting the Nazis Germany, Italy and the Imperial Japan. Contributing greatly to the success of the justice side of WWII.

In conclusion, there have been several attempts of transformation from isolationism to internationalism in the history of the United States. although the previous ones are considered experimentations on what the philosophy of the country should be, they had laid solid foundations for the final one, which is considered a success for both the US and the entire world.
