As its basic commercial value, excellent fashion design can greatly push the sales revenue. Many fashion companies often use brilliant design as a breakthrough tool to expand the market share. Good design can easily catch customers’ eyes especially in fashion industry. A suitable design can better enchant the customers who pays to promote the sales, which has much better effects yet lower cost than the investment in advertising or other ways.

When Pierre Cardin left Dior to start his own company in 1950. He started out by designing clothing for stage productions with his special designs, and soon built up a client base. Cardin says of his company's beginning, "I started with 20 people. I was successful immediately." In 1953, Cardin released his first designs of women's clothing and became a member of the Chambre Syndicale, a French association of haute couture designers. In 1954, he opened his first boutique for women, called Eve. And that same year, his bubble dresses became an international success. Pierre Cardin’s wonderful designs have made great returns on his lower investments. (Holt, DH, 1997)

Fashion brand are often related with the fashion designs, the latter is the foundation of brand building in fashion industry. Every fashion brand have its own unique design to have people obsessed about it. Customers often choose clothes pursuing the famous brands. Thus the design investment make a huge returns by building its own brand.

In the first years of the decade, Cardin began to design clothes inspired by science. This would become known simply as the "Space Age look." Interestingly, just as Japanese fashion had inspired Cardin years before, some Japanese designers are still heavily influenced by the futuristic style that Cardin pioneered.Another success for Cardin came in 1966, when, after rounding up "all the triplets in Paris" to be the models for its debut, Cardin released his first clothing line for children. The 1960s also saw Cardin's introduction of a new casual style of mens’ dress clothing that had a major impact on the look of American and British menswear. Through all the early years of designs, Cardin has build up his own brand. In the decades since, the Pierre Cardin fashion house has grown into an empire under the influence of his fashion brand. Cardin has licensed large numbers of diverse products to carry his famous initials. Some of these products include furniture, frying pans, bottled water, and a select number of 1973 AMC Javelin cars. He also owns a restaurant chain called Maxim's. Cardin's extensive use of branding has brought way too much success to his business and make great profits of returns with a very high rate of ROI. Brilliant design can bring in a lot customer loyalties with a measured ROI.

Design is the core element in attracting customers in fashion industry. People tend to buy the same design styles that they like. Famous and delicate designs can have lots customers to pursuit for their life. The more attractive, the more customers will follow. Good designs can soon bring in huge customer loyalty to make large profits.

Christian Louboutin set up his own shop in Paris in the early 1990s. He found the inspiration for his trademark red outer soles in 1993. He said:”Red soles are so flirtatious,' and my customers asked me not to stop." His artistic yet sexy shoes soon attracted the likes of Princess Caroline of Monaco, one of his early customers. Madonna wore his dangerously high heels in some of her videos, helping to introduce the world to Louboutin. Over the years, Louboutin has continued to turn out season after season of imaginative footwear. He has turned his surrealistically beautiful shoes into an international success story by win a lot loyalty customers. According to The New Yorker, he sells more than 500,000 pairs of his fabulous footwear each year. (Marshall  Alexandra, 2008)

As discussed above, design have great commercial value including increasing sales, building its brand and bringing in customer loyalty. Great designs are often the push of business developments. Good designs often make a high rate of ROI to the fashion companies. Therefore, the investors should pay more attention to design investment while make their decision of investment.
