Introduction

"An Open Letter to NYC" is a song by American hip hop group the Beastie Boys, released as the third single from their sixth studio album To the 5 Boroughs. [1] The song’s lyrics talk about the group’s affection for their homeplace, New York City. It expresses that different people bring their culture to New York City to form an interesting and beautiful city.

 

Song analysis

Brooklyn, Bronx, Queens and Staten / From the Battery to the top of Manhattan [2] All these places are boroughs of New York City or famous park. To form a whole map of New York City in people’s mind at the very first beginning.

Shout out the South Bronx where my mom hails from / Right next to High Bridge across from Harlem / To the Grand Concourse where my mom and dad met / Before they moved on down to the Upper West / I see you're still strong after all that's gone on” Days passed by, the city is still going well.

Life long we dedicate this song / Just a little something to show some respect / To the city that blends and mends and tests” The purpose to write this song is to show respect to the strong and lovely city.

Since 911 we're still livin' / And lovin' life we've been given / Ain't nothing gonna take that away from us / Were lookin' pretty and gritty 'cause in the city we trust” The September 11 attacks[4] were a series of four coordinated terrorist attacks which we will never forget. It’s a tragedy but the one who still living are supposed to be strong-minded because we trust the city.

Dear New York I know a lot has changed / 2 towers down but you're still in the game / Home to many rejecting know one / Accepting peoples of all places, wherever they're from” Everything has passed. The city is still here. So does our home.

The song shows the writer’s deep love to New York as well as the idea that different people bring their culture to New York City to form an interesting and beautiful city. Especially the sentences “Brooklyn, Bronx, Queens and Staten / From the Battery to the top of Manhattan / Asian, Middle-Eastern and Latin / Black, White, New York you make it happen” have repeat four times. This emphasize the main ideas is the cultural capital of the world. The title “An Open Letter to NYC” means this is the words that writer wants all the citizen know.
