Key elements in the workplace

 

Motivation, stress management and job satisfaction are said to be crucial elements in the workplace. Holding these three big treasures, I think motivation is the most important one for employees, because with high motivations, employees can solve the problems of stress positively and continually, and are satisfied with their jobs to a large extent. Therefore, supervisors can assure their employees have the three elements by examining their motivations in the workplace from the perspectives of needs, equity and intrinsic motivation.

Employees meeting their needs can be widely motivated in the workplace. According to Professor McClelland, people want three needs for achievement, affiliation and power in the workplace. When met these needs, they feel satisfied, motivated and manage their stress well. From the PPT we have learnt, theories of Maslow’s Need Hierarchy, ERG Theory and Two-factor Theory tell different perspectives of needs to meet employees’ needs and expectations or values, such as ego needs, social needs; growth, relatedness, existence; motivators, hygiene factors.

Equal treat is an effective to motivate employees in the workplace as well. As is known to us, every employee wants to be treated equally on the payment and rewards. Meanwhile, organizations should be consistent with their values at any time. If not, employees can be disappointed. Thus, from the equity theory in the PPT, it is very important for organizations to make equal and incentive plans in the workplace, including the systems of payment and rewarding.

Jobs with intrinsic motivations can fulfil employees’ motivations largely. According to the Job Characteristics Theory, employees desire meaningful jobs which have motivators by allowing autonomy and providing them with feedbacks. Jobs full of skill variety, task identification and task significance bring large potential motivations. Meanwhile, supervisors should provide effective feedbacks for employees, which are specific, sincere and timely. If so, employees are motivated largely in the workplace.

Supervisors can assure employees have motivations in the workplace by meeting employees’ needs, treating them equally and utilizing the characteristics of jobs. However, how can employees keep their motivations in the life and work in the best situation? In my opinion, they can increase their self-esteem, set proper goals and keep positive attitudes in the workplace.

Employees should increase self-esteem and set new attainable goals in the workplace. They can make incentive and proper plans by themselves. Trying new experiences is a good way to increase self-esteem. Similarly, setting specific and measurable goals can realize the ego expectations. Therefore, to keep motivations and thus manage stress well, please increase self-esteem and set attainable and specific goals in the workplace.
