Introduction

Biodiversity, which indicates the variety of life in a limited area, is a frequently used index to value the environmental situation. (UNEP, 1992) It is often measured at the genetic, species, or ecosystem level. (Gaston et al. 2000) Some previous studies pointed out that the variety of invertebrate animals had an important influence on biodiversity in the water ecosystem. They could change the chemical composition in the freshwater and played a role in food chain existence. (CHELSEA J. LITTLE et al. 2018) Normally, an ecosystem could have serval different ecosystem levels, where location made a big difference. A soil environment was supposed to have a higher level of ecosystem levels than water ecosystem due to a variety of species. (Simon F. Thrush et al. 2017)

According to these finding, a hypothesis has been made. The location can make a significant difference in the water chemical condition as well as biodiversity different ecosystem. To verify this hypothesis, the open water and vegetated samples from two different sites around the Flinders University Lake have been collected. After analyzing the samples, a standard index called Simpson’s Index of Diversity has been applied to the experimental data. As a result, surprisingly there is no significant difference in the biodiversity of the distinct location. Also, there is no significant difference in the chemical condition between two place, which indicates that the chemical condition is not the key control element in the biodiversity.

Methods

According to the hypothesis, locations in the vegetated area, as well as open water area around the Flinders University Lake, have been chosen. For each location, a sample group of three is collected. The methods used in this experiment are described below.

In invertebrate sample collecting, 10 x 1m sweeps of the net have been used. A top corner of the net will stick into the soil with 5 cm out of the water. This is in order to avoid capturing too much sediment in each sample. As for invertebrate sample analysis, the method we used is described below. Allow the sample to settle on the bench for 5 minutes. Swirling is forbidden in this step. Plankton wheel method is applied. First, add 10 ml of sample to the circular well. Then add 5 drops of Lugol’s iodine. Finally, calculation of invertebrate number is done under a microscope according to the species handbook.

For data analysis, the following indexes have been used. A total number of species present as Species Richness. The number of individuals of each species as Species Abundance. The degree to which the abundance of each species in a given area is similar to Species Evenness. Simson’s Index of Diversity (1-D) is applied to indicate the Species richness and Abundance which can be used to calculate diversity indices. The formula is as follows
