On September 7th, 2018, The New York Times’ journalists Elizabeth Williamson and Emily Steel reported the defamation cases that Alex Jones are involved in. According to Elizabeth and Williamson, Alex Jones, a conspiracy theorist and radio show host, was sued by over six victim families of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting case for defamation. In December 2012, after the shooting cases happened in the Stand Hook Elementary School, Mr. Jones publicly doubted the facts of the case, claiming that the massacre was a conspiracy plotted by the US government aiming at promoting stricter gun control laws. Mr. Jones even asserted the shooting cases and the victims reported by media were totally fake and no shooting massacre actually occurred (Williamson and Steel, 2018). Additionally, Jones took advantages of social media, such as the Infowars app, Twitter and Facebook to spread the baseless comments so as to attract the public’s attention. Jones’s conspiracy theories and fraudulent comments soon irritated the families of victims in the shooting cases. Six families of Sand Hook suited against Mr. Jones and sued him for defamation. By the end of August 2018, Alex Jones was being called to account.

From this report, it is learned that Alex Jones may have violated the media law by spreading false and harmful statements through social media. According to the First Amendment of the United States, false statements which contain serious inaccuracies and of public concern could be regarded as a crime of defamation. In this case, plaintiffs are individuals who are involved in a public issue, and Jones deliberately spread baseless statements and slanders about this private concerns through media, so Jones’ behaviors may have violated the First Amendment by defaming the victims, and his conspiracy theories contained actual malice, which also had significant negative impacts on the public.
