Now I’m going to introduce some relevant government regulations regarding human resources in the US, Australia, and China. There are both similarities and differences among regulations in different countries, and this has significant impacts on both employees and companies.
The most obvious one is the minimum wage. As we can see from the table, the federal minimum wage is US$7.25 per hour in the US, A$18.93 or US$14.52 per hour in Australia, and RMB 10 to 20.8, or US$1.45 to 3.02 in China. The differences among three countries are quite large, mainly because China is still a developing country with too many people, while the US and Australia are developed countries.
Second, laws in three countries all regulate a weekly working hours, which is 38 hours in Australia, and 40 hours in both the US and China.
Also, for the annual leave, employees in China usually have 5-15 days off per year, while the annual paid vacation is 20 days in Australia. However, American law doesn’t specify a paid leave, but employees usually have 15-20 days leave.
In addition, all the three countries have discrimination protection. China Employment Law, the US Labor Law, and the Fair Work Act in Australia all mention anti-discrimination or unfair treatment for race, color, religion, sex and so on.
Lastly, regulations about foreign nationals work visa are also distinct in the three countries. Generally speaking, it is relatively to obtain a working visa as long as one holds a qualified educational background, while it is much harder to obtain a work visa in the US or China.
