Being able to distinguish different management styles gives people an advantage when they participate in business communications. Moreover, the evaluation of different management styles is also contributive for an individual to establish his or her own effective management styles. Based on the different characters of a business manager, the managements styles to be discussed in this paper include: analytical, manipulative, friendly and expressive (Benfari, 1999). Based on the assessment of the four different styles, I believe that an analytical style of management is the most appropriate for me as a business manager.

The most distinguished characteristic of the manipulative style is the straight-forward way of communication. They tend to go straight to the point during communication and give direct orders when there are tasks to delegate. This is an efficient form of management, but it overlooks the importance of the human factor in the communication process. The promotion of individualism can make a manager autocratic and unable to listen to advice. It would also make the people with manipulative style different to follow, since they tend to focus on their own paces in communication without catering to the needs of others. This is thus not the ideal style of management due to the many disadvantages. From the perspective of a business manager, people with a manipulative style are more likely to efficiently execute explicit orders given adequate trust.

People with the expressive style of managements are often regarded as passionate leaders since they are the most able to influence others with their own emotions. Such influence may originate from both their verbal and nonverbal language. People with the expressive management style spend longer time communicating with others, so that his ideas and intentions can be fully understood. However, lingering too much on communication may diminish the effectiveness of execution. The repetition of conversation may also lead to antipathy in the listeners. Under pressure, the expressive type may appeal for verbal communication to resolve the problems, which can make the situation even worse. Since the expressive management style is neither efficient nor easily adopted, it is not the most appropriate management style for me.

The analytical type is mostly quiet and calm. When they communicate with others, they tend to refer to facts, data and anecdotes in support of their ideas. They also reach a conclusion by careful and step-by-step proofs, and never jump to a conclusion without knowing the whole story. In the business world, being professional, precise and knowledgeable are the most important characteristics for a business manager, since they should be the persons that are the savviest with facts and numbers to gain advantage in negotiations and communications (Ma, 2007). The effectiveness of the analytical type also remains undiminished, since little time is wasted on meaningless conversations. Since I am a believer of leaders by action and knowledge, the analytical management style is the closest one to my value system.

However, the analytical type can be a bit angular in establishing lasting inter-personal relationships. The best way to make up for it is the adoption of the friendly style in business communication. With the omission of aggressiveness in communication and the added features of caring and compassion, the friendly style becomes the most comfortable style of leadership for one to be around. These advantages become the perfect complement for all of the three styles discussed above, and should be recommended for any business managers who want to be an effective and popular in communication.

In conclusion, the most appropriate styles for me to adopt is the analytical management style, which promotes professionalism. However, an added sense of friendliness is also necessary. The personalities of individuals are the determining factor for an individual in deciding on his or her management styles. Meanwhile, the complexity of personalities should also be noted (Management, 2014). Business leaders should also learn to adapt their management styles based on the environment, to maximize the effectiveness of communication.
