The New Culture Movement was a social revolution initiated by some of the western-educated social activists in China in the 1910s. Chen Duxiu, Lu Xun, Qian Xuantong and Li Dazhao were the major representatives of the movement (Lu 91). This movement marked the termination of the traditional Confucianism that ruled China for thousands of years and pushed China onto the path of democracy, science and technology.

One of the major motivations of the New Culture Movement was to free the Chinese society from the Confucianism ideology that had been deeply rooted in the Chines ideology. While there were teachings by Confucianism that should no longer be promoted, such as the suppression of women’s rights, the leaders of the New Culture Movement were targeting the misinterpretation of the Confucianism instead of Confucius himself. In the story Kung I-Chi (Lu 103-106), Lu Xun tells the fictional story of a vagrant intellect who became an outcast of the society. While Kung was the representation of Confucianism obviously, Lu Xun took a compassionate perspective, since he believed that the onlookers should be condemned more for their credulity and indifference to see Kung suffer. In his articles published in The New Youth, Chen Duxiu expressed similar opinions that condemned the interpretation of Confucianism into the distinct social classes and how numb the Chinese people became under such a system (Chan 353)

In addition to the Literary movement led by Chen Duxiu, Lu Xun and Hu Shi, the promotion of pragmatism was another major characteristic of the New Culture Movement (Chan 369). According to Hu Shi, science, technology and democracy were the major tools that would lead the wrecked nation to succeed once more. With the successful promotion of the modern vernacular Chinese and the rebel against the corrupt social structure, the New Culture Movement is a major prompter of the development of modern science in China.
