In traditional view, academia is a pure, noble, venerable and sacred spot. However, the holy has been routed in these days, and news about cheating or plagiarism in academia have swirled around for years. Unethical behaviors like stealing others’ content, seeking answers from others secretly during an interview, and taking tests for others seriously violate the values of American educational which treat independent thought as the highest value. Generally, in order to choose appropriate method to protect independent thought, it is necessary for universities to consider the extent and causes of students’ misconduct before punishing them.

Copying others’ homework is an unethical behavior led by technological development and laziness of students. With the help of advanced technology, it is easy for students to search answers on the internet; therefore, a part of students prefer not to be bothered to do homework by themselves. For example, according to the article “A Cheating Crisis in America’s Schools” published on ABC News, Angelo Angelis, a professor at Hunter College in New York City, found that “half a dozen of his students copied their work on the story of Paul Revere from the internet.” In this case, it is laziness drives the college students to copy their homework from the elementary school students, since it is more likely that a college student has better performance than an elementary school student in telling stories. Furthermore, it is rare that the college students have to finish the homework which they cannot complete by themselves.

Under the circumstance, it is appropriate for schools to give a warning to the students who carry out slight unethical behaviors such as copying their homework from others. A verbal warning could make the doer be ashamed by his/her unethical behaviors, and prevent him/her from carrying out another similar unethical behavior. It tends to be an embarrassing experience for a person to be criticized by others, especially for someone the person respect. Consequently, it is unlikely for a person to do something which will make him/her be criticized again.  Therefore, it is a rational way to punish the students who behave unethically because of their laziness through providing a warning.

Cheating is another unethical behavior that could be conducted by students who expect something which could not be done by themselves. Some students are eager to achieve a goal which cannot be done depending on their own capacity, so they choose to cheat to solve the problem. Take a dishonest behavior introduced in Laura Krantz and Jessica Meyers’ article “Fight to Find Cheats Takes Schools Around the World” as an example: a Chinese girl was found to depend on her mother’s hint to answer the interview questions put forwards by an admission officer in a verification agency called Vericant. The reason why she did it is based on two factors. First, she has poor speaking abilities in English and it was very likely for her to fail in the interview. Second, the chance to be enrolled by Vericant was very important for her. In this way, the strong wish pushed her to find a way to finish the interview successfully, and other’s help was the solution she could think of. Similarly, it is a common way for some people to falsify their resume to get a job.

In this way, circulating a notice of criticism is rational for schools to punish cheating. Compared to the behavior of coping homework from others, cheating is more serious. It not only deceives the teachers, schools or other institutions, but also negatively influence the opportunity of other people who are seeking similar goal. Therefore, a circulated notice of criticism could be provided by the school, since it not only makes the doer realize his/her mistake, but also negatively impact his/her image which will further influence his/her future development.

Criminal behavior may be conducted by the students who are blinded by greed which requires the most serious punishment for prevention. Once an individual is blinded by greed, he /she will finally step over the boundary between morals and laws. For instance, in Raymond A. Schroth’s article “The Plagiarism Plague,” “a 19-year-old Long Island college student was charged with scheming to defraud, criminal impersonation and falsifying business records after he took the SAT and ACT tests for at least 15 students, charging each $3,600.” In this case, lust for money promoted the student to step into the path of crimes, which is much worse than the former two situations.

In this case, the schools need to expel the students who break the law. Apparently, both warning and circulated notice of criticism are useless in dealing with this occasion. As the student could implement the unethical behavior at the risk of bearing legal liability, any verbal critics, matter of saving face, or influence on grades could not affect or change him. In this way, schools need to make the heaviest penalty and expel the student for the sake of letting him/her accept responsibility for his/her own actions.

In conclusion, it is essential for universities to figure out reasons why students adopt unethical behaviors before punish them; only in this way, could the universities find substantial and effective solutions to correct these unethical behaviors. Specifically, warning could be applied into penalizing students who are too lazy to do their homework; circulating a notice of criticism could be appropriate in dealing with students who have high subjective wishes but cannot achieve it on their own ability; and universities have to expel students who are blind by greed and conduct criminal behaviors. As an old Chinese saying goes, “you reap what you sow”. All the people have to pay for their own behavior, and no pains no gains. College students could achieve their success in study and life based on their independent efforts.
