Introduction:

Spirited Away is a Japanese anime directed by Miyazaki Hayao. It tells the story of the girl Chihiro who came to another world by accident and her gradual growing up in the new world. This anime has gained huge success in western world (Russell, 2003, Gallagher, 2004 & BBC World Service, 2001). After a cultural analysis, signs and symbolism, and hero's journey, it is to argue that there are in fact a lot of implication and annotation of social reality in the film Spirited Away.

The main characters of Spirited Away such as Yubaba, Boh and Chihiro's parents serve as signs and symbols and have specific connotations in the real life. According to Carl Gustav Jung (1964, p20), a symbol is a term, a name etc which seems to be familiar in daily life, yet has specific connotations in addition to its conventional meaning. There are a lot of real world associations in Spirited Away (TED-Ed, 2016). At first, it are signs of Yubaba’s western clothes style, the opposition of Boh’s huge body and his childish clothing, and images and behavior of Chihiro's parents in Spirited Away and its relation with the real world based on the work of Carl Gustav Jung on Symbolism. With a variety of bright colors of gold jewelry and clothes of western style, a typical image of Yubaba as the new aristocracy or the nouveau riche after the industrial revolution is shown in front of the viewers. The highest ruler of bathhouse is undoubtedly Yubaba(see figure 1). Because of the particularity of the identity, her dress in the whole system is the most unexpected and different. Different from all staff, she is the only one wearing Western classical dress: the high-rise towering, and fluffy pleated skirt with a high collar, lace, pleated, multi-level cake Cutting and lamb legs and high waist, wrapping almost the whole body, coupled with a pair of high-heeled shoes, it can be inferred that her dress is a typical Victorian-style women's clothing. The Swelling of her hair, the expansion of the skirt, the wide use of the jewelry as well as the prominent eye and the nose not only reflects the special status and financial resources, but also show its extreme expansion of personal desires of Yubaba. This dress arrangement is a special embodiment. If Yubaba is wearing traditional kimono, this will become more consistent with her identity, but it is difficult to show her character and desire. Only with the clothes in the most prosperous period of Victoria when the British Empire emerged as a world power, marking the British conquest of the world's ambitions and desire, new identity and the status of Yubaba can be demonstrated fully . The symbols use and meaning in the Spirited Away have meaning that is conceptually the same in the real world. According to Hayao Miyazaki himself, the idea of Yubaba’s clothes comes from some of the illustrations in the "Alice in Wonderland” (Westbrook, 2003). The emergence of modern Western dress also reflects the ambivalence of the West culture in the modern Japan: one the one side, the Japanese study from Western culture and civilization vigorously, while the West broke all the tranquility and harmony of the traditional Japanese society so that there are extravagant desire and industrial pollution since the last century.

In the opposition of this image of Boh and his clothing, the conflict of the adult and child, and emotions is reflected in Boh. In the bathhouse, the person who holds the second place after Yubaba should be her son - Boh, a big fat boy who wore a red bellyband(see figure 2). According to the combination and the relationship between the different polymerization, clothing has been bearing the identification of different nationalities, social division and groups, since the human society entering into the era of civilization. Haragake is Japanese traditional underwear, which men, women and children in general wear to protect the internal organs, in order not to catch cold. Children's bellybands will be dedicated to the use of festive colors and be printed the auspicious Chinese characters. The name Boh  in Japanese has the meaning of "young master". Boh’s head is almost larger than adults, but the bellyband is completely for a child. He is fear of germs and can not be infected with bacteria.  Under the caring and doting of his mother, he will be confined to the baby room, with no contact with the outside world. More seriously, he is to develop arrogant and capricious character. This baby represents our emotions (Circle of Meditation, 2011). This shows the conflicts of Hayao Miyazaki. On the one side, he the ambivalence of the West culture in the modern Japan; but the escape from the world and contact for Japan will also be devastating, leading to deformed development.

Chihiro's parents are a symbol of the extreme greed for food of thousands of adults and arrogance, through which Hayao Miyazaki satirizes the greedy and arrogant adults as a whole. In the movie, the scenes of Chihiro's parents are depicted in detail.  The film begins with Chihiro's parents and Chihiro straying into a different world, but also they just thought that it was the wreckage of the park. In the face of steaming but unattended food, Chihiro's parents even did not notice any abnormalities and can not help their temptation. Chihiro again and again tried to prevent the behavior of their parents, but they did not agree, and enjoy eating and drinking. Miyazaki borrowed the image of pig to describe the human image in a quite ironical manner (see figure 3). In other words, Hayao Miyazaki use the image of pig as the metaphor of extremely stupid human, and its irony is obvious.  Here the pig is a stupid and ignorant image.  In addition to pig, greed can be expressed in human desire for a certain dedication. From the surface, Chihiro's parents are just greedy for food only, but deeply they are greedy in nature. Greed for food is one of the seven original sins in the Bible, with the root of as original sin lies in human beings. If they become pigs, they will not give up their food even if they are beaten by the whip, which is enough to explain their greed for food. They kept eating the food, even if their clothes will be bursting.  They are bound by the rules of the material world (Reel Rundown, 2016). Because Chihiro's parents do not know the rules of the spirit world, they have been turned into pigs. They said that if someone is here, we can give them money, either credit card or cash casually. They think that the money can solve everything without any restrictions. These lines are the classical example of the human greedy and depict the supercilious and arrogant image of human.

Spirited Away has created a divine world that seems to be independent of the real world, but it is not completely detached from the world. There are signs of the new aristocracy or the nouveau riche in Yubaba, the conflict of the adult and child, and emotions in Boh and symbol of the extreme greed and arrogance in Chihiro's parents. The Japanese anime Spirited Away, made by the master Hayao Miyazaki is not only full of the symbolic image, but also reflects a deep cultural connotation.

There are also a lot of real world culture influence on the cultural elements within the fantasy world constructed in Spirited Away in terms of politics, economy, religion, social, intellect, and art. In Japanese fantasy literature, it is common for reality and fantasy to blend together (Napier, 2005, p.74). In Spirited Away, the spirit world is under the influence of Shinto, which can be seen from so many odd and strange looking faces in the bathhouse. According to the myths of early Shinto, olds that human and natural things can become Kami due to excellent power (Napier, 2001, p241). For example, River Spirit and Haku are the Spirits of river and the Kohaku River respectively with supernatural power (see figure1).

In the "Spirited Away" it vividly shows the serious social problems of pollution, with the image of the River Sprit and Haku. The hero Haku was originally the Spirit of the Kohaku River, and his river disappeared in the construction of the building and he became homeless. Even if Chihiro help him to remember his name, he cannot go back. The main reason is that human beings destroyed the Haku 's home for their own desires. When River Spirit first came to the bathhouse with his body covered with sludge and garbage (see figure 2). This reflects the environmental problems and the pursuit of human profits in the real world.

There is also huge gap between the rich, and also the women began to place important roles in economics. The rich figures are Yubaba and Noh-Face, and the poor are employees in the bathhouse. Also, the Noh-Face, who does not reveal his true identity, is rich and may have multiple identities. It may imply some countries who gain huge profits from Japan. By contrast, the employees are in general poor.  Multiple subjective positions are available for women/girls in Miyazaki’s films (Rifa-Valls, 2011, p;93). The owner of bathhouse Yubaba hoards huge amount of wealth is a woman (see figure 3). Chihiro also finds her job in bathhouse.

Also, there is clear political connotation: the western political influence on Japan. Although the film scene is full of the Japanese traditional culture, which is regarded as the keynote, a careful observation will reveal the Western and European architectural style. And her room is completely getting rid of the Japanese style, and there is European-style fireplace, carpet and furnishings. It makes her room full of exotic flavor. Also, she has a European face with a hooked nose. By contrast, the people of lower social status wear traditional Japanese clothes. The western style of Yubaba, the real ruler of the bathhouse, reflects the western influence on Japan. 

In terms of intellect, this film tries to reveal a conflicting mentality of the Japanese society. There is nostalgia of the traditional and local culture and resistance of the foreign influence and modernization (Napier, 2006, p.287). The modern society is composed of greedy people. Chihiro‘s parents, classical figures of modern society, cannot resist the temptation of food. There are also human endless requests for nature, and wanton destruction of the ecology.  In terms of art, there is a blending of exquisite traditional Japanese culture and western culture in this film, which generate a mysterious atmosphere that permeates the supernatural world. The film uses modern city backgrounds boldly, as the spirit world is based on the appearance of the Edo-Tokyo Buildings. Also there is a fascinating bathhouse in the Edo Period (see figure 4).  And the dressing and room decoration adds the western flavor.

The Japanese anime Spirited Away, made by the master Hayao Miyazaki is full of the symbolic image, which reflects a deep cultural connotation. And Spirited Away is also full of distinct national and cultural characteristics. Cultural elements within Spirited Away can express the real world culture influence in terms of politics, economy, religion, social, intellect, and art.


And a discussion of Hero's Journey of the heroine Chihiro also reveals a growing up experience common to a lot of young people who just enter the society. According to The Hero with a Thousand Faces by Campbell (1998), the story of a hero or heroine is always a journey with 12 components, which can be summarized as ordinary world, call to adventure, refusal of the call, meeting with the mentor, crossing the first threshold, tests, allies, enemies, approach to the inmost cave,  severe test (ordeal), to be rewarded (reward), the road back, resurrection, and at last return with the elixir. And Spirited Away is in general consistent with the 12 steps. The little girl Chihiro was pulled out of the normal ordinary world, and thrown into a special anomaly world. Just as Campbell (1998) wrote: “A blunder ---apparently the merest chance reveals an unexpected world” (p.28). Because of human greed, her parents cannot control their own desires for free food, and turned into a pig. This is a special event, the call to adventure and the turning point of her destiny. Chihiro has to face problems, challenges and adventures. She has been unable to continue the ordinary world of plain and comfortable life. And she will have a clear goal: save her parents, and prevent herself from turning into animals. Chihiro has fear of the unknown and is not decided whether to really start this adventure, and really enter the very world at this time. There will be a lot of outside factors to help her overcome this fear. For those accept the call, the first encounter is a protective figure(Campbell, 1998,37).  In this case, with the help of the Yubaba’s assistant---Haku, she successfully obtained a job. Next, the hero has finally made a decision to enter another world tour, and is determined to face a series of unknown challenges and difficulty. Her name is taken away by Yubaba at the same time, which means that Chihiro has entered a new world. The next step is the crossings of the first threshold and after that, he can go forward in her adventure (Campbell, 1998, p.41). Gradually she was no longer be intimidated by those who have the strange faces and behavior. And, she gradually knows that Haku, the young boy is disciples of the bathhouse boss--- Yubaba. Due to her good character, she began to get the respect of others in the bathhouse, and she also becomes a very good friend of Haku. Chihiro wiped, cleaned the bath, and picked up briquettes in the boiler. Then it is the approach to the deep cave, and severe test. When guests came to bath, she was excellent to help the river god clean the body and get the award of a magical pill; when Noh face begin to eat everything, she bravely face the rage of him and successfully lead to leave the soup house. Later, Chihiro found that Haku was injured, in order to save him, she gave her a pill which was given by the river god to him to get out of seal in the body of Haku. But Haku still did not wake up. In order to save Haku, Chihiro decided to find the person who gave seal alone –Zeniba or   "money witch”, Yubaba’s twin sister. She hopes she can save Haku. After a long journey, Chihiro finally came to the house of Zeniba . The house of Zeniba in fact represents deep cave and severe test for Chihiro. Zeniba or "money witch" said that seal has been lifted from Haku by Chihiro, and Haku now should have recovered. Suddenly someone knocked on the door, and behind the door is a Haku's image as a dragon. These extraordinary encounters are symbolic of the suffering for the shaping of the soul, and what Chihiro to do is to hone the spirit in their difficulties. This is the favorite phase of myth-adventure (Campbell, 1998, p49). Finally, she received a reward, namely the success of rescuing the parents, and embarking on the road home. As for Archetype, the archetype of Chihiro in your Hero's journey analysis is in fact the young people who just enter the society. There is a lot of expression of girl power (Rifa-Valls, 2011) and It is about the lesson of manhood from movies (TED.com, 2013). This group of young people does not know what to do to withstand the confusing world and they are clumsy to try to enter the new community. For example, But they want to become a useful member of the machine of society. If not, just like what depicted in the film, lazy people become slaughtered livestock or briquettes. Also, Chihiro is clumsy and nervous when she just entered the bathhouse.  They also face the temptation of fame, material, and so on, such as gold of Noh-Face and free food.

Conclusion

To sum up, Spirited Away has created a divine world that seems to be independent of the real world, but it is not completely detached from the world. There are signs of the new aristocracy or the nouveau riche in Yubaba, the conflict of the adult and child, and emotions in Boh and symbol of the extreme greed and arrogance in Chihiro's parents, cultural influence, and common experience of growing up in the real world. The real word association is important as it can lead the viewers to produce profound thinking of social reality. This is the real meaning and value of Hayao Miyazaki's works
