The events that occurred in Phoenix on March 13, 1997 still have the world at a loss. A triangle (boomerang) shaped craft with seven lights on the main body and one trailing behind the rest appeared over Phoenix. Some believe that they were just flares used by the military, but others think that it was definitely extraterrestrial. Much evidence has been found, but the mystery remains.

On March 13, 1997, an inexplicable phenomenon took place in the sky over Phoenix, Arizona. Thousands of people witnessed the occurrence, and a few dozen even caught it on camera. The event was so astonishing that the most world-renowned news source, CNN, broadcast it on national television. Disappearing, the mind-boggling event left thousands, or even millions, in disbelief at what they had just witnessed. What was it? The world may never know.

The V-shaped object that appeared in the sky that night over Phoenix has left every UFO fanatic and scientist in awe. There is no real explanation for the bright lights that took the shape of a huge boomerang from 8:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. Many have tried to explain what no one can, but for every scenario, there is an equally crazy explanation that proves it to be false. To this day, there is still no explanation that is completely rock-solid and can explain this extremely odd occurrence. Have the inhabitants of Phoenix been the victim of a huge hoax, or have the people been witness to one of the most conclusive UFO sightings in history?

Witnesses

There are many people throughout Arizona that say that they saw what is being called the Phoenix lights. Officials received calls and reports of the sighting from as far south as Tucson to the Northwestern reaches of Kingman. Dozens of people videotaped the action that was taking place, and a few even said that they saw the boomerang shaped UFO fly overhead before the sightings. News crews covered as many witnesses as they could find, trying to reveal some sort of clarity or explanation to what was seen to set every mind at ease. The most conclusive evidence of a UFO sighting came from a family that CNN interviewed and made their cover story.

The Ley family says they saw the object fly overhead before any of the occurrences later that night. Tim Ley and his son said, "When it finally got here and we realized this thing was coming right over us, we really started getting antsy." The Ley's say they saw the object pass directly over them an hour before any lights had been sighted. Expert Jim Dilettoso said that their account was so important because they claim that they were so close to the craft.(Hook, 1997)

The Ley's weren't the only people that witnessed something unusual that evening. Bill Greiner, a cement truck driver, says that while hauling a load down a mountain north of Phoenix, he saw two very brightly lit orbs. According to Mr. Greiner, the orbs looked like spinning tops. He realizes that he is just a dumb truck driver, but said that he saw something that doesn't belong there. Greiner's route took him by the base, where the orbs had positioned themselves above. From there, Greiner said that three F-16's took off and veered right for the orbs. "Then it shot straight up and disappeared like a blink of an eye," says Greiner. He also added," It was crazy. I know those pilots saw it. Hell, I'll take a lie detector test on national TV if that guy from the base does the same thing". Mr. Greiner agreed to take a lie detector test, so he must have seen something that has completely convinced him that something wasn't normal.(Price, 1997)

There are many other eye witnesses to this event, too many to mention in this paper. They all said one main thing though. They know what they saw, and nobody is going to change their mind about it. Something extraterrestrial was out there, and they all know it. All of the videos and witnesses other than them have convinced them, and the government isn't going to be able to cover it up. It may remain a mystery until the end of time.

Skeptics

Even though all of the people who saw the lights that evening swear that it was definitely not of this world, there are still many skeptics. These skeptics include anybody from professional scientists to amateur astronomers in their backyards with a $20 telescope. All of which say that the events are very explainable and are of this world. How accountable are their opinions though?

Mitch Stanley spends many a night in his back yard with his telescope, scanning the sky at night for anything unusual. The night of the Phoenix Lights, Mitch was in his back yard. His mother saw the mystical lights coming over the horizon and asked Mitch what they were, he replied, "Planes." Mitch says that it was very clear to him that they were light, private planes. When asked why he didn't stare at them for longer he responded, "They were just planes, I didn't want to look at them." Assured at the certainty in her sons voice, his mother said that she didn't even bother looking in the scope at the "planes." The Stanley's tried to get Mitch's story out, but when they tried to contact somebody, they never received any notification back. When confronted about the calls, many of the contacts claimed that they had lost their phone number. Mitch says he only saw planes, but thousands say they saw something different. (Ortega, 1997)

Some people went to the Air Force for answers. They concluded that what people saw that night were flares. Richard Price of USA Today claims that what doesn't cohere is the fact that Jim Dilettoso, leader of Village labs, ran computer tests on it, and ruled out the possibility of flares, lasers, or airplanes. Also, a year later the Air Force dropped some of thevery same snowbird flares that they said that they dropped March 13, 1997. The flares did not match up! There was little to no resemblence between the snowbird flares and what the people of Phoenix were in an uproar about (Thierry, 1999). The Air Force is trying to cover up something, but nobody knows what.

Tony Ortega, Phoenix New Times Journalist, claimed that Phoenix officials say that it wasn't a UFO, but also say that they won't investigate because they, "have no air force." At least that is what the spokesman for Mayor Skip Rimsza says. He added, "It's way beyond our resources to chase lights in the sky. We pick up trash. Call the Governor." When Gov. Fife Symington was asked about the event on a radio show he said that that was the first he had heard about it.

Senator John McCain was contacted and he referred the case to the U.S. Air Force in Washington, D.C. Early in June of '97 the Air Force closed the case and said they would do nothing, because the government hasn't officially been invloved with UFOs since 1969, the Roswell incident. Gloria Cales, spokeswoman for the Air Force, said, "This is a matter for local jurisdiction."

Basically what is happening here is that everybody is avoiding the incident. The Air Force says that it's a city matter and the city says that it's an Air Force matter. No investigation has started, because nobody will take responsibility for the mystery that still lies fresh in Phoenix's mind (Ortega, 1997).

Conspiracy

What many people don't hear about is the conspiracy behind all of the events. On April 13, 1997, two Mexican workers were cleaning out a vacant house. Inside the house they found a box that contained English writing on it, which they did not understand. They disregarded the box as trash and tossed it in the back of their truck. Upon the arrival at their residence that night their nephew, fluent in English, examined the box and concluded that the box was not trash. In fact, he believed that the box contained what would be the answer to what we now call The Phoenix Lights.

It is still unclear what the contents of the box are. It has something to do with a cloth impregnated with blood. Tests were ran and confirmed that it was human blood. This is the only article in the box that they are revealing at this point. They say that the other things in the box will put an end to the mystery of the Phoenix Lights. Releasing the results is not an option at this point, becuase all of the pieces of the puzzle have not been put together as of yet (Wolfson,2001).

There is also a story about a search in the Hebrew text of the Old Testament. The Hebrew text contains many many pages, all of which are located on a computer for search purposes. When the words: Phoenix, Lights, UFO, aliens, and the Answer were entered, they all showed up on the same page. What all of this means is not clear, but it just adds to the somewhat erie feeling that all of this brings (Wolfson, 2001).

What happened that night still is not completely clear to anyone. Many questions still remain. Were the lights just flares dropped by the Air Force? Were they private planes flown as a giant hoax? Those questions are miniscule compared to the most important of all. What is out there, and what do they want with us?
