Emily Dickinson was an famous American poet who lived a mostly introverted and reclusive life. Thought of as an eccentric by the locals, she became known for her penchant for white clothing and her reluctance to greet guests or, later in life, even leave her room. However, during her seclusion life, she had created a large amount of poems on various themes ranging from life, nature, love, time and eternity to morbidity and death. Though there was no clear evidence that she had fallen in love with any men, in her poems the intense feeling of love was obviously shown.

YOU left me, sweet, two legacies,—

Had He the offer of;

You left me boundaries of pain        

Capacious as the sea,

Between eternity and time,

Your consciousness and me

In the poem "You Left me, Sweet, Two Legacies" above, Dickinson raised the suspicion about "What is the relationship between you and me" and "What are the two legacies" in the first sentence of the first stanza. However, as the word "sweet" had been widely used to describe the relationship between lovers, it was the first evidence that "you" and "me" were the preys of love. Then in the next sentence, she directly brought forth the fact that one of the two legacies was love, and she further described this legacy as a fairly precious gift that the Heavenly Father would also be content with. As heaven or the god was the symbol of holiness and purity, Dickinson also suggested that was so pure and sacred that it could even touch the inner mind of Heavenly Father.

In the second stanza, she illustrated that apart from the legacy of love, her bygone lover had caused her to suffer in extreme pain as well. In her statement, she painted an image for the abstract feeling and compared the sorrow which could not be assessed to the capacious sea which could be measured by width. In the end, she claimed that the pain arising from the departure of lovers between life and death was eternal. In general, this poem showed that Dickinson regarded love as something sweet, pure and holy, and she thought that love would not gradually diminish with death. Instead, love, coupled with the pain stemming from it, would go beyond the boundary of time and space to be eternal.

ALTER? When the hills do.

Falter? When the sun

Question if his glory

Be the perfect one.

Surfeit? When the daffodil         

Doth of the dew:

Even as herself, O friend!

I will of you!

Another poem "Alter? When the Hills Do" was also an excellent example to show her attitudes toward love. In the poem, Dickinson stated that her love toward her friend would not alter until the hills which was comparably immobile changed their appearance. She would not falter or hesitate over their love until the sun questioned its glory. She would not be tired of their relationship until the daffodil was fed up with the dew which hung on it as companion. As a matter of fact, this poem reminded me of the famous saying "When the hills are all flat, when Heaven and Earth mingle, not till then will I part from you" in the ancient Chinese verse "Shangxie". Both of the two poems expressed the same resolution toward the loyalty of love. Although the writers of these two poems came from different background, they held a universal consensus that true love should be unshakable. In short, Dickinson treasured their friendship as an invaluable gift which would stay forever under any circumstances.

DOUBT me, my dim companion!

Why, God would be content

With but a fraction of the love

Poured thee without a stint.

The whole of me, forever,         

What more the woman can,—

Say quick, that I may dower thee

With last delight I own!

It cannot be my spirit,

For that was thine before;        

I ceded all of dust I knew,—

What opulence the more

Had I, a humble maiden,

Whose farthest of degree

Was that she might         

Some distant heaven,

Dwell timidly with thee!

From the poem above we could see that In Dickinson's mind, she was nurturing a great deal of tenderness and sentimentality. To her firmly belief, her love toward the "dim companion" could withstand tests of whatever forms as she asked her companion to doubt her to his content. In addition, she expressed her idea that if she were God, she would not be pleased with receiving only a fraction of love. In her view, love should be given at a full length and she promised she would devote the whole of her to her companion without a stint on a life basis. Besides, she put forward the question on what a woman could give to her lover except for herself, and she immediately answered this question by emphasizing the fact that she could sacrifice her last delight for the man's sake. From the first stanza, it was manifested that Dickinson believed that love was more about giving than receiving, and her idea of love was so idealistic as if it were held by an innocent young girl.

In the next stanza, Dickinson attributed all her thoughts, spirits to the companion she loved. What seemed to her was that facing the man she loved, she becomes nothing but a humble maiden who had nothing to her own. Foe she thought that she owns no fabulous opulence which could made her deserve his love, she only wished to stay timidly with the man in heaven. All these sentences painted us an image of a shy but pure girl who was willing to sacrifice everything for the man she love without equal response. As a woman who fancied the colour of white which symbolized purity, Dickinson held a purest mind toward love and her power of love was so immense that it could cut across every boundaries either in space or in time.

In conclusion, alienated from the society as she was, she never lose the ability to love intensely. In essence, her treatment of love shown in her poetry has left a strong and profound impression on the American literature.
