Pudong, an emerging new district of Shanghai, China, has been playing an extremely important role of in Shanghai’s economy during the past twenty years. As known to all, today Shanghai is one of the most advanced cities in the world, but not too many people know that twenty years ago Shanghai remained poor and undeveloped. At that time old buildings and dirty streets crowed shanghai. Nonetheless, Shanghai developed exponentially in order to gain its position todayand Pudong’s rise was thedriving engine of Shanghai’s economy.
Pudong was located along the east side of the Huangpu River, next to the district Puxi. There used to be an old joke in the 1980s in shanghai, “I would like a bed in Puxi instead of a house in Pudong.” Everyone knew Pudong was lagging behind other districts. Sometimes a decision can change a person’s life, and it is the same for a city. Since China’s reform and opening to the world, it has formulated a few important policies, such as constructing a special, economic region anddeveloping the Pudongdistrcit was one of those policies. And this decision created today’s Manhattan of China.
In the 1990s, the development of Pudong entered a substantial phase. In the first round, the Chinese government put in 4 billions dollars inPudong project in order to complete infrastructure work. According to the Shanghai’s Pudong Development Project, “During the 1990s ten major construction projects are planned in connection with the, Pudong development, including two bridges, an highway, an underground railway line, a deep- water port, a sewage works, a drinking water supply project, a second international airport, a gas project, and a project to update communication facilities in The Bund” (Shanghai’s Pudong development project, page 363). The list of infrastructure work is pretty long; however it only took Chinese government five years to finish everything. The unbelievable speed of development helped Pudongexperienced a huge change in the shortest amount of time.
Pudong is one of the world’s top financial centers today, obviously just five years of building infrastructure won’t be enough to make Pudong become an international leader in the world. Of course the Chinese government put more effort in Pudong project, and transportationwas the heart of the whole project. “Improved transport facilities are recognised as vital, both with pudong itself, but also in linking the new development zone with the old city. Both inner and outer ring-roads are proposed, the former due for completion in 1995 and the latter by 2000. The inner ring-road includes two six-lane bridges across the Huangpi River, the Ningguo Bridges and the Nanpu Bridges. Present ricer crossings, 15 ferries and two two-line tunnels, are totally inadequate.”( Shanghai’sPudong project, page 363). According to the sources, theChinese government planned to completely rebuild whole area’s transportation system, the Chinese government spent ten billions dollars as the second round of investment. By the end of 20th century, the work had been primarily been completed. In 1999, Pudong International Airport was set up for use, and the airport announced that Pudong was finally ready to welcome foreigners and reach out to the world.
Even though the Chinese government finished the infrastructure within ten years, the government had higher expectations of this becautiful area. The Chinese government dreamed of building Pudong as an International Financial Centre.Lujiazui, a locality in Pudong, had been developed specifically as a new financial district of Shanghai since 1990s. “Today in Lujiazuithere are more than 30 buildings over 25 stories high with commerce as their leading function, and over 504 domestic and overseas financial and insurance corporations located in Lujiazui.”( Shanghai’sPudong development project, page 363). Also, because of the huge Chinese market potential, foreign capitals such as Citibank N.A all jumped into Lujiazui, looking for more opportunities. So the sudden entry of foreign capital flowing into Pudong continued to increase its influence. No doubt, if Pudong is the engine of Shanghai economy, then Lujiazui is going to be the financial heart of Pudong.
With so much financial sources and human sources, the rise of Pudong seemed inevitable. Today, pudong is playing an important role in the world and today’s Pudong is a shining district in the world. There were too many important events and awards in shanghai recently, but the world expo was one of the most important events in the world.
The theme of World Expo 2010 Shanghai rings true: "Better City, Better Life." It implies that if we manage to make cities more sustainable, then we can improve the quality of life for all.Pudong is the best example of this idea. A lot of countries’ venues are built in Pudong, and exotic buildings perfectly correspond to Pudong buildings to show the integration of different cultures in Pudong.
Pudong, known as the Eastern Manhattan, is famous for its night view and architecture. Today, Pudong has three times the number of skyscrapers as Manhattan. After long running for a whole day, there is nothing can be better than lying on a comfortable bed and feasting eyes on the night views. However, because of the high speed of development, house prices of Pudong have been buoyed up for years. So similar to Manhattan, mostly only rich people can afford the house and enjoy the night view at home. In a word, today’s Pudong is similar to New York’s Manhattan, both of them are the financial centers and hearts of the cities.
Pudong is an amazing district in Shanghai. Because of the government policy and effort, Pudong today has been a symbol of shanghai, an engine of shanghai economy. The rise of Pudong reflects the rise of China, especially the huge investments and unbelievable development speed created today’s Pudong, and the success of World Expo repaid honored the new district, and all Chinese are proud of Pudong.
