The article Globalization and Income Slowdown was written by David Leonhardt on August, 21, 2012. It mainly deals with the causes to the income slowdown in America. In the context of economic globalization, all international members are enjoying the unprecedented strengths and also suffering the disadvantages at the same time. America, a developed country playing a leading and positive role in economic affairs, is inevitably bearing the constant headaches of globalization. One adverse effect of globalization on America is the shrinking income of workers (Leonhardt, 2012). The following will provide a detailed description on how globalization shrinks people’s pocket.
Globalization facilitates the free flow of labor, goods, capital, and technology. Multinationals can invest beyond borders in order to seek much cheaper labors. American multinationals establish branches in Eastern and Southeast Asia, where boasts a large number of cheap labors. This practice, on one hand, increases the income of Asian workers, on the other hand, causes surplus labor in America. American workers with poor skills are kept at the bottom of occupation and labor is their sole livelihood, once their opportunities of employment are deprived, they will be reduced to the brink of starvation. In 2008, financial crisis (Bloomberg News) plagued America, to cope economic recession, companies chose to cut their production for purchasing power of customers was declined. This phenomenon worsened worker’s life. The high unemployment rate deprived them of the subsistence wage. In competition with workers in other countries, they are in a unfavorable condition, for companies have shifted their production line into overseas branches, only left headquarter at home to regulate production abroad. APPLE (from website)now is the target of public criticism, for it offers their job opportunities to Chinese workers, people launched verbal attacks by naming APPLE the “killer of American employment”. In the Address of the State Union released on January 24, president Obama criticized China for seizing the job opportunities belong to American workers.
With the advent of globalization, competition in the world market becomes increasingly fierce. To enlarge their market share and broaden their target customers, companies apply sophisticated technology so as to upgrade their designs and improve efficiency, price war is instrumental in competition against others. For imported articles from other countries, for instance, China, are much cheaper than indigenous ones. Thus to compete with foreign companies, American companies have to reduce the price of goods. One noticeable example is that TV set in the past is a luxury that hardly affordable, but now it is the basic necessities in daily life. This will unavoidably causes reduction in workers’ salaries. The application of advanced technology replaces the work done by even hundreds of workers. These workers, lacking the skills demanded in this highly developed society, have to seek other sources of income. However, competition permeates every corner of the world; their decreasing income is the doomed result in this technology-oriented society. For example, American workers in sweatshops can earn only $11.5 per hour, compared with the high living cost, this income can hardly meet the needs of daily life, education of children and health care. What’s worse, those unskilled or semiskilled workers will confront the competition from new-generation applicants. They are well-educated and master relevant skills, thus boast absolute competitive edge over their senior counterparts.
In the context of globalization, technology develops by leaps and bounds, this trend asks for more from workers. Those who can not meet this demand will be eliminated and then replaced by workers with skills. Those rejected workers will toil at a lower labor price. Workers with a low diploma are confronting a gloomy prospect; the past three decades witnessed the steady slowdown of salary for blue workers. They are not able to find lucrative jobs because of their poor skill. Many jobs done by workers are now replaced by sophisticated machinery, for example, robots. The improvement of technology goes with the trend of the time; it provides more opportunities for talented people. But labors that devote their life to the prosperity of American economy are on the edge of elimination. Surplus labors with poor income constitute a threat to the security and stability of American society. “Occupy Wall Street” (from website) was a campaign launched by civilians, most of them are layouts. The chasm of income disparity between the surging income of minority and low income of the majority has been broadened. Thus, people rendered jobless by technology pose a threat to American society.
To sum up, globalization exerts both positive and negative influence on American society. The saying goes: everything has two sides. It is true with globalization, which is termed as a two-edged sword. America should take measures to better up the life of low-income populace. This essay explains the effect of globalization on America from three aspects. These aspects are interconnected and contribute together to the low income of workers.
