Education is the reflection of cultures. Different cultures lead to different social backgrounds and education phenomena. Malcolm Gladwell is a famous science writer, and he argues that there are some differences between the methods that Asian and American students learn math in “Rice Paddies and Math Tests”. Also he gives further explanations about the different education styles in “Marita’s Bargain”. More reasons are given to explain why these differences exist on education system. Gladwell thinks Asian and American education style are based on various cultures and he points out that the problem of mastering math is about intrinsic advantages and work ethic. Then specific introduction of Gladwell’s theory will be included in the following and I will give my personal experience in this paper. I agree with Gladwell’s opinion that the education style is really according to culture.

Gladwell talks about some aspects of the difference of math learning and gives the reason to analyze these situations.  He asserts that Asians have more talent and ability on math than Americans. Firstly, the number system in English is irregular, but in Asia it’s perfectly regular and simple. So Asians are easier to learn math and they become more interested in math. Another reason for Asians’ superiority in math is the culture of work. Chinese family works year-around and the work is very complex, so they have the habit of hard working. Also children are influenced by their parents and they have persistence and endurance. For example, Renee has great persistence when she meets math problems and she gets the answer in the end. “Working really hard is what successful people do, and the genius of the culture formed in the rice paddies is that hard work gave those in the fields a way to find meaning in the midst of great uncertainty and poverty.” (93) Gladwell says this and Asia is the typical example, the traditional agriculture influence Asians and they must work hard to have better life. In math, they also have persistence and study hard. So this is a very important reason for the difference of Asian and American math study.

According to Gladwell’s studies and theory, and I also give my own personal experience to express our similar opinion. The difference between Asia and America reflects obviously in education characteristics and goals. And all these derive from different cultures. The American culture pays attention to foster elite. Differentiation is one of the characteristics of mathematics education in the United States. American education used to find an outstanding student with mathematical ability, and select him from the class to another additional class. The aim is to protect and make full use of his talent, also to avoid his interference with other students with an excess of energy in mathematics classroom. However, China is a very big country with 1.3 billion people and the characteristic of mathematics education in China is generalization. Low potential students enhance the mathematical ability through frequent review. On the one hand, the loss of China is to stifle individuality education and inevitably stifle the mathematics elites. On the other hand, most students are under the dual pressure of the school and the parents, this means they must pay a lot of time and energy for more useless mathematical learning in the future. Moreover, the math education in China is used to applying formula, but in America the math education is focus on divergent thinking. For example, seven girls split two pizza and three boys divided one pizza, so for a girl or a boy who gets the most pizza. Most Chinese students use the conventional method to make reduction of fractions to a common denominator and then compare them. But as for American students, they have at least four methods to give the answer. Copying the traditional formula is not beneficial to improve creative thinking and the flexibility of thinking. The growth of ability is based on personal intensive study and creative thinking. This is my own opinion and further consideration is necessary for better understanding.

To sum up, the difference of Asian and American math education is obvious and the great influence of culture is inevitable in Gladwell’s text. And I also give some personal ideas. So we should clarify the difference and absorb the better method to apply on our own education.(代写)
