My Preparation For College

Thousands of students across the United States of all ages are involved in raising livestock for agricultural projects. The workload received from one of these projects is tremendous, not always fun, but definitely beneficial. In fact, each student spends hours every day with their animals to work towards their supreme goal in life, to attend college and become successful. After all, raising a livestock project such as lambs is a complete preparation for attending college. One of the most exciting aspects of attending college in the eyes of a teenager is that they are finally on their own. Responsibility must quickly be plastered onto this unskilled individual. At first, this may be a difficult task, but students who raised a livestock project are already accustomed. Every day in the lamb pen, I must make sure my lambs are fed twice a day on schedule, exercised, maintaining a healthy diet, and trained to show correctly.

In college, students must complete each assignment on time, attend every class, make certain that they pay for their classes on time, and not party so hard that they can’t wake up the next day for the early eight o’clock class. One must realize that there are priorities that must be taken care of before taking part in leisure activities. My best friend, Justin, keeps his lambs at my house. At first, he did not understand that lambs came first over everything. He would miss several feedings and hardly ever train his projects. Once he understood that lambs were more important than his leisure activities, he did a lot better in competition.

Likewise, my friend Clint went to college at the University of Texas in Austin and partied very hard his freshman year. No surprise, it showed significantly in his grades. Once he came home for summer courses, his parents made him do nothing but study. He missed work, going out with his friends, and only saw his girlfriend on Friday and Saturday nights. He made all As, and is doing much better this year in college after enforcing these new techniques. Money management is a skill that must not be overlooked for both college bound and agricultural students. Because money does not grow on trees, I have learned to hold fundraisers and apply for several scholarships that could be used at this time of need. Unbelievably, many high school students do not know how to apply for college scholarships, but because I am involved in this agricultural project, I began to apply in the fifth grade.

Once I received the money, I discovered that I could not just go out and splurge my money on a pen full of lambs. I had to conserve my money, knowing that it would also be needed for feed, entry fees, veterinary bills, hotel rooms, and special equipment. In college, although a person might want to take several classes one semester, the fact of buying books, food, gas bills on long trips home, and a place to live also has to be factored in. A great abundance of traveling is involved when raising show lambs. In all of this traveling, the opportunity to see and even visit several different colleges is everywhere.

After encountering a wide variety of colleges, it is easier to get a mental picture of what life would be like in either that very large city filled with cacophony such as Houston, or the quiet, extremely small town of Stephenville. A person can then decide what college lifestyle would best fit their needs. Along with the hundreds of miles of highway, the opportunity to meet new people is everywhere. A person’s social skills, which are a necessity in college, are enhanced almost daily when getting directions from a gas station in some town you never heard of, meeting new ranchers, or even talking to your agriculture teacher about your projects. In all of this exposure to new people, an array of different majors and job opportunities come to mind. All of these new experiences may make you decide to become an agriculture teacher, a meat evaluator, a veterinarian, or even an anesthesiologist after giving your lambs several shots of medicine. It was once thought that college was the basis of the development of our lives.

Of course, there must always be something that prepares us for this extraordinary event. It is apparent that raising an agricultural project such as lambs is able to handle such an important task. As you can see, raising these projects does not only prepare us for college; it prepares us for life.
