The Vietnam government calls the tourism as the locomotive of national economical development. The tourism in Vietnam plays an important role in t he development of economy. The profile of Vietnam 越南概述

Vietnam is a less developed country located in the east of the Indochinese Peninsula, officially called the Socialist Republic of Vietnam. Its population is around 90.3 million according to the 2012 census ( Cecile&Christele, 2013). Vietnam is bordered by China to the north, Cambodia to the southwest, Laos to the northwest and the South China Sea to the east. Vietnam is a country unified under a Communist administration. The Vietnam administration launched a series of political and economic reforms, which helped Vietnam step out of its isolation from the rest of the world. In 2007, it joined the World Trade Organization, which boosted its economic development. However, Vietnam still suffers from high levels of income inequality, gender discrimination and disparity in healthcare provision.

Vietnam’s development as a tourist destination

Vietnam has a very long coastline, which runs 3456 kilometers. By its very nature, Vietnam has countless white beaches and beautiful islands. In addition, it has bountiful resources of jungles and luxuriant rubber plantations, thus making Vietnam a charming tourist attraction. Vietnam is a country with varied land and beautiful natural landscape, United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization lists its five scenic spots as the world culture and natural legacy. Due to its short period of opening up, its scenic spots still keep its simplicity as its charm, which is rarely seen in other more developed tourist resorts. Vietnam is equipped with international standards of restaurants, along with the hospitality tradition of Vietnamese, and all this makes tourists feel like home and leave an unforgettable memory.

Vietnam has many famous tourism cities. Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam, has many rivers and lakes. Because its evergreen trees and blooming flowers, Hanoi is also called the “spring city of flowers”. Halong is also a tourism city called “the wonder of the world” due to its beautiful and magical bay——Halong Bay. Over there the landscape is charming, sky and water are blue, with the whisper of sea winds, tourists can enjoy a nice day.

Due to its comfortable weather, four seasons in Vietnam are all for tourism. Tourists can take flights, trains or buses to any city and province. After arriving at the destination, tourists can rent bicycles or motorcycles to the scenic spots.

General account of the tourism trends with respect to both outbound and inbound tourism flows

Vietnam’s major sources of tourists are from China, the United States, Japan and Korea. According to the statistics, in 2006, the number of international tourists which Vietnam operated was 3.6 million, the number of domestic tourists which Vietnam operated was 17.5 million, the income of tourism was 32 billion dollars ( Myriam&Frank, 2007). Six years passed, according to the statistics, at the end of the November in 2012, the number of international tourists was 6 million, the number of domestic tourists was 32 million( Cecile&Christele, 2013). Among the international tourists, Chinese occupied the No.1 place, followed by Korean and Japanese. And in addition, the number of Russian tourists increased sharply. And according to the statistics, most tourists travelled to Vietnam by flight, some by ship and some by busFrom the above statistics, we can see that Vietnam is a potential tourist country. More and more foreign tourists come to Vietnam. But judging from its major sources, we can see the inbound tourism mainly concentrate on the East Asia. So it has a lot of potential to develop and broaden its European and American markets.

With the improvement of living standards, more and more Vietnamese choose to travel abroad. According to a report conducted by England accountant association, from 2007 onwards, the number of Vietnamese who travels abroad with year-on-year growth of more than 87 %( Sun, 2012)

The importance and roles of tourism in Vietnam’s economy

Recent years, Vietnam Government adopts positive measures and strongly supports the development of tourism, because Vietnam becomes aware of the importance of the development of tourism, believing that the tourism should be the locomotive of national economical development.

Vietnam’s tourism becomes the main power to attract foreign investments. Foreign investors put a lot of money into the spheres of restaurants and food service industry, which helps the development of economy.

According to the statistics, the contribution rate of Vietnam tourism to the GDP was 6.5% in 2012(Cecile&Christele, 2013). This means under the background of hard times, tourism is still the highlight of Vietnam’s economy. What is more, tourism makes great contribution in the aspects of transforming the economical structure and improving the living standards of people. In 2012, Vietnam’s tourism provided 1.5 million job opportunities (Cecile&Christele, 2013). This figure reflects that the Vietnam’s tourism plays an important in economical development.

Conclusion 结论

In conclusion, Vietnam as a tourism destination attracts hundreds of thousands of foreigners coming to visit its beautiful scenery every year. Vietnam’s GDP owes much to its tourism. According to the statistics, Vietnam’s tourists mainly come from the East Asia, which means Vietnam has the chance to develop its European and American markets. Vietnam’s tourism still has a large potential to develop and become a world-class tourism resorts if the Vietnam government seizes the opportunity and makes the right policies in respect to the tourism.
