After reading the assigned lens including the poetries of great poet Langston Hughes in American literature, their eyes were watching god which stresses a black woman who pursues his own destiny by Zora Neale Hurston, I narrow my topic to rebellions, rebellions to traditional culture, rebellions to powerful government, especially the female leading role who is a tribute-Katniss Everdeen’s gradually attitude change toward the Capitol in the film–Hunger Games: catching fires.
The original reason she takes part in the hunger games of 12 district for the sake of her sister. At the beginning when President Snow requires that she should convince him by showing that she is in love with Petta to stop the uprising, she says “Yes”. It is obvious that she has no idea to take the responsibility of rebellions, what she only wants is to protect her family. Compared with the first lecture, in which she is angry and screams, struggles for the survival the old rebels, then she becomes calm even when the rebels are killed, she still continues her lectures. From those scenes, she wants to protect more people in the way of submission. But with the start of the competition of the victors, she gradually shows her rebellions, at the end of film, she shoots the manual sky with her arrow, the collapse of the sky is showed especially, and when she is taken away from the jungle, the scene that a close-up of her eyes, both show her rebellions perfectly.
Both the distinct people in film and black people Langston Hughes’s poetry describes are in suppression, their living conditions are bad and not valued as "Harlem” describes, the distinct people are in the suppression of the Capitol while the black people are treated badly by white people society. In “The Negro Speaks of Rivers”, Langston traces the long history of black people and is proud for their own identity which is not valued by mainstream society. To some extent, Katniss and Langston resist to the suppression although in different ways. In their re eyes were watching god and film, females play significant roles. Janet in the novel chooses to go away with Joe and pursues her own life, which is pretty rare at that time when women are suppressed. That is, the film and the novel are women’s literature.
In traditional America culture, the race and gender problems exist for a long time. The black men are in a very bad situation, they are not valued and disrespected. Thus the poet Langston’s poetries which describe the ordinary black people’s life and his pride about his identity is a struggle for the black people in the form of literature. And Katniss in the film also chooses to fight with the powerful suppression. Both fights are rebellions to traditional America culture. Besides, women are in a disadvantage situation in America that puts too much emphasis on the patriarchy. The film encourages the feminist by using an women leader to save the world which usually achieved by men, and the novel also advocates the feminist by setting a role who refuses the traditional arrangements for women.
By doing so, challenging to unfair, unequal, suppression, tradition and choosing to rebel in the novel which cannot be achieved in the moment, the artists want to express their rebellions in the form of literature, their work and rebellion will lead to more people to realize the problems in the real world and inspire them to fight and solve the problems. In a word, more people will concentrate on solving the problems rather than watching at the corner.
