Hope, the Bacon of Life

Different people will hold various views on the same issue, thus the interpretation of the themes of certain literary works shall be a complex task depending on the cultural and academic background of readers. After I have finished the reading of the book Twelve Years a Slave, what has touched me most is Solomon Northup’s spirit of always being hopeful in facing the harsh torture and setbacks in life, which helps me to put forward the theme of the story as that hope is the bacon of life. It is Solomon Northup’s hope for freedom and life that has made him survival.
As the novel shows, Solomon Northup’s life journey reflected in this novel can be divided into three parts, which are his life as a free man in New York, his life as Ford’s slave and his life as Epps’s slave respectively. Every time when his life shifted from one stage to another, great changes happened to him and it was hope that got him through. In the beginning of the book, according to the author’s narration, Solomon Northup has lived a very happy life with his family. He has narrated himself as a free man and he says that “having being born a freeman, and for more than thirty years enjoyed the blessings of liberty in a free state” (Northup 17), besides this, Solomon Northup is also an educated man with property since he comments on his father that “besides giving us an education surpassing that condition bestowed upon children, by his diligence and economy, a sufficient property” (Northup 18). He also says that “I married Anne Hampton” (Northup 22), and “we were the parents of three children” (Northup 22). So it is quite clear that Solomon Northup used to live a happy and peaceful life.
Then things changed dramatically, and Solomon Northup says that “it shut out him from the sweet light of liberty, for many a weary years” (Northup 27). When he woke up, he has been “a slave waiting to be sold by James H. Burch” (Northup 41) and he comments the liars to be “subtle and inhuman monsters in the shape of men”. Though he faced great failures and harsh beat of life, he tries to get along well with different people and get through his suffering. On one hand, he got along well with his slaver Ford as Platt since he still has hope for freedom and life, which can be proved by his suggestion to “deliver Ford’s timber by water instead of by land” (Northup 98) and his comparison with his companion Eliza that Platt did not let himself drowned in grief (Northup 120). His deeds in this stage show that he still remains his hope.
More importantly, even when he was in profound desperate situations after he was sold by Ford to become the slave of Epps who is a “shrewd calculator” (Northup 171) and “nigger breaker” (Northup 184), he tried every possible means to get freedom, which also shows that he is a person always bestowed with hope in life. For example, though he knew that Epps did wrong to Patsey, he follows Epps’s order to whip Patsby to be obedient to his master (Northup 257); what’s more, though he was strictly restrained by Epps, he has hope for freedom thus he asked Armsby for help and he says that “I concluded finally to ask him dimply if he would deposit a letter for me in the Marksville post-office the next time” (Northup 233). Last but not least, though Platt received defeat since Armsby revealed his secret, he still has the courage to ask Bass for help to deliver a letter and he insisted in doing that despite the fact that he was rejected in the beginning (Northup 288-281). Actually, it is just Bass’s faithfulness to his promise that finally made Northup get rid of the role as a slave. Finally, in the end of the story, Solomon Northup returned to his family and got together with his wife and children after twelve years and he says that he had no comment to make upon the system of slavery (Northup 321), which can be viewed as a kind of silent rebellion.
With the close inspection of the book, it is quite persuasive to draw a conclusion that hope plays an important role in the process of Solomon Northup’s regaining of freedom. So this journey of Solomon Northup proved to us that hope is the bacon of life.
